Opis:
The lower Paleozoic source rocks in the offshore part of the Gryfice and Kolobrzeg blocks (NW Poland) were studied through geochemical data and numerical modelling. The geochemical study revealed a presence of effective source rocks in Caradocian strata, but with low hydrocarbon potential. The remaining lower Paleozoic source rock horizons were not documented by core samples. The timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion was modelled for the K1-1/86 and L2-1/87 boreholes located in the Gryfice and Kolobrzeg blocks, respectively. 1-D and 2-D modelling indicated that in the Kolobrzeg Block the onset of petroleum generation occurred at the end of the Silurian and the beginning of the Devonian. Source rocks in the Gryfice Block reached the early stage of oil generation at the beginning of the Permian and generation processes were completed by the end of the Triassic. Migration of hydrocarbons from source rocks began in the Carboniferous in both the Gryfice and Kolobrzeg blocks and lasted to the end of the Mesozoic. During hydrocarbon migration, an intensive dispersion process was observed, caused by leaking along the fault planes. The modelling revealed that hydrocarbons may have accumulated in Devonian reservoirs. The lack of any discovered accumulations could be the result of hydrocarbon dispersion caused by tectonic deformation and intense vertical fault block movements.

Opis:
The burial history, thermal maturity, and timing of hydrocarbon generation of four source rock successions were modelled: the Middle Cambrian, the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian, the Upper Ordovician (Caradocian) and the lower Silurian (Llandovery and Wenlock). The 1-D modelling was carried out in profiles of eight boreholes throughout the western Baltic region. Four selected boreholes are located offshore: A8-1/83, A23-1/88, B6-1/82 and B4-2A/02, and four onshore: Bialogóra 3, Dbki 3, Leba 8 and arnowiec IG 1. The thermal maturity of source rocks is the highest in the deeper buried western part of the basin and decreases from the west to the east and north-east towards the basin margins. The lower Paleozoic source rocks contain oil-prone Type-II kerogen. The modelling indicated that the onset of petroleum generation from the lower Paleozoic source rocks occurred from the Early Devonian through the early Carboniferous period. The peak of hydrocarbon generation took place from the Late Devonian to the Tournaisian. The majority of hydrocarbons generated were expelled during the latest Early Devonian and Carboniferous, and oil has not been expelled from source rock only in the eastern offshore part of the basin.

Opis:
2-D modelling of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, migration and accumulation processes was carried out for the four (Middle Cambrian, Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian, Caradocian and Llandovery) source rock horizons. The petroleum potential of these source rocks is different, the highest being observed in the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian horizon and the lowest in the Middle Cambrian one. The maturity of organic matter within these source units increases from the north-east to the south-west of the Polish part of Baltic region. The petroleum generation from these source rocks was highest in the Darlowo and Slupsk blocks as well as in the onshore part of the Leba Block. Expulsion took place mainly from the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian source rocks and these rocks sourced almost all hydrocarbons accumulated within the Middle Cambrian sandstone reservoirs. Migration of hydrocarbons proceeded along fault zones. Almost all petroleum processes in the study area took place between the end of the Pridoli and the end of the Carboniferous. Moreover, during the Permian and the Mesozoic, part of the hydrocarbons remigrated within the reservoir. This process changed the setting and the volume of hydrocarbon accumulations. It was caused by the tectonic rebuilding of the basin and, in most cases, it led to the modification of accumulation range or to the dispersion of hydrocarbons.

Opis:
The burial history and thermal evolution of the western part of the Baltic region was reconstructed by means of 1-D modelling for eight boreholes penetrating the lower Paleozoic succession. The Neoproterozoic rifting presumably caused elevation of heat flow, while Cambrian to Mid Ordovician post-rift thermal sag of the Baltica passive margin led to systematic decrease of heat flow with time. Development of the Late Ordovician to Silurian flexural foredeep of the Caledonide collision zone was associated with intensive subsidence, a high rate of sediment deposition and rapid burial of the Upper Cambrian and/or Tremadocian, Upper Ordovician and lower Silurian source rocks, presumably sufficient for the early stage of oil generation. After post-Caledonian Early Devonian uplift, the western Baltic region was subject to Early Devonian to early Carboniferous subsidence and deposition, leading to further burial of the source rocks. Together with elevated heat flow, characteristic of the Variscan broad foreland, this caused further source rocks maturation and hydrocarbon generation. Late- to post-Variscan uplift and erosion (late Carboniferous to late Permian) resulted in complete removal of the Middle Devonian to lower Carboniferous strata and development of the major regional unconformity. During late Permian to Cretaceous time the western part of the Baltic region constituted an eastern flank of the Polish Trough, with the main phases of subsidence and burial during late Permian-Early Triassic time, related to rifting in the Polish Trough, and during Late Cretaceous time, related to the compressional regime. Maturity profiles in boreholes from the vicinity of the studied boreholes indicate the presence of a late Mesozoic (Late Cretaceous?) positive thermal event, causing further maturation of the source rock.

Opis:
The Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Polish Platform reflects repeated changes in loading condi tions at the Al pine–Carpathian and Arctic–North Atlantic margins of the European continent. After the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene main phase of the Mid-Polish Basin inversion, a second phase of limited uplift of the Mid-Polish Swell occurred during the Middle–Late Eocene. End Eocene and Early Oligocene subsidence of narrow grabens on the Fore-Sudetic Monocline was coeval with normal fault ing in the East Alpine foredeep basin and the development of the Central European rift system. At the sametime the Outer Carpathian flysch basins were rearranged, presumably in response to the build-up of compressional stresses at crustal levels, whilst subsidence and erosion patterns changed in the Carpathian Foreland from being dominated by the NW–SE trending Mid-Pol ish Swell to being controlled by the development of the W–E trending Meta-Carpathian Swell. At the end of the Oligocene the Fore-Sudetic graben system propagated into the area of the Trans-European Suture Zone and the Sudetes and remained active during the Early and Middle Miocene. This was paralleled by intensified subduction activity and thrusting of the Carpathians and the development of their flexural foredeep basin. A short early Sarmatian episode of basement in volving transpression along the SW margin of the Mid-Pol ish Swell correlates with the termination of north-directed nappe transport in the Outer Carpathians. This was followed by eastward migration of the subsidence centre of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin and the gradual termination of tectonic activity in the grabens of the Polish Lowlands. After a period ofpost-orogenic relaxation the present-day compressional stress regime built up during the Pliocene and Quaternary. Intensified ridge push forces exerted on the Arctic–North Atlantic passive margins contribute to this compressional stress field that is dominated by collision-related stresses reflecting continued indentation of the Adriatic Block. This sequence of events is interpreted in terms of changing tectonic loads in the Carpathians, Alps and at the NW passive margin of Europe. The complex and diachronous interaction of mechanically coupled and uncoupled plates along collision zones probably underlies the temporally varying response of the Carpathian Foreland that in addition was complicated by the heterogeneous structure of its lithosphere. Progressively increasing ridge push on the passive margin played a secondary role in the stress differentiation of the study area.

Opis:
Examination of the landslide in Kłodne was carried out in 2013 and 2014. The work was divided into two parts: geological engineering investigations (mapping of the external borders of the landslide) and geodetic surveying (photogrammetric studies and monitoring of surface movements). The boundaries of the landslide were marked using a Garmin eTrex GPS receiver and a geological compass (Freiberg). The boundaries have not changed and is convergent with previous studies. In the south-western part of the landslide the boundary is blurred as a result of anthropogenic transformation of the area. In the south-eastern part (as at May17, 2014) about 200 m3 of the colluvial material has been moved. Photogrammetric studies were based on the analysis of aerial photos from May 26, 2009 (prior tothe landslide formation) and on the orthophotomap created from images taken in July 2010, after the formation of the landslide. Displacement vectors were determined by comparing the locations of specific terrain details in the pictures taken before and after the mass movements occurred. In the upper part of the landslide the maximum horizontal displacement value was 87.7 m, the minimum was 6.2, and the average – 84.5 m. In the lower part of the landslide the horizontal displacements amounted to 65.5 m, had a minimum value of 10.3, and an average of 54.8 m. In the last stage of the study the base measurement network was created. It consisted of 68 points stabilized in the ground. The measurements were performed using the static GNSS observations method and linear-angular measurements carried out with a precise total station. In 2013, horizontal displacements ranged from 1 to 8.1 mm, and vertical ones ranged from –9.8 to 13.5 mm. In 2014, there were displacements observed in the vicinity of the main slope. They were directed to the south. The horizontal displacement vector has reached values from 2 to 94 mm, and the vertical vector was from –63 to 16 mm.

Opis:
The Miocene Carpathian foredeep basin in Poland (CFB) developed in front of the Outer Carpathian fold-and-thrust belt, at the junction of the East European craton and the Palaeozoic platform. 3D seismic data, cores and well logs from Sokołów area (vicinity of Rzeszów) were used in order to construct new depositional model of the Miocene succession of the Carpathian foredeep. The gas-bearing Miocene infill of the CFB is characterized by a shallowing-upward trend of sedimentation and consists of hemipelagic, turbiditic and deltaic and nearshore-to-estuarine facies associations. Lowermost part of the Miocene infill seems to has been deposited from the North. Such direction of sediment supply was related to influence of existing relief of the pre-Miocene basement, where very deep (up to 1,5 km) erosional valleys cut into the pre-Miocene (Precambrian) basement due to inversion and uplift of the SE segment of theMid-Polish Trough are located. Upper part of theMiocene infill reflects sediment progradation from the South, from the Carpathian area into the foredeep basin. In the Rzeszów area existence of the so-called anhydrite-less island, i.e. relatively large area devoid of the Badenian evaporitic cover caused by the post-Badenian uplift and widespread erosion of evaporites, has been postulated for many years. Interpretation of 3D seismic data showed that such model should be abandoned. In the studied part of the CFB, Late Badenian evaporitic sedimentation was restricted to the axial parts of deep paleovalleys. Evaporites deposited in these valleys have been rarely encountered by exploration wells as such wells were almost exclusively located above basement highs separating erosional paleovalleys, hence giving incorrect assumption regarding regional lack of evaporitic cover. It is possible that in axial parts of these valleys important gas accumulations might exist, charged from the South and sealed by the Badenian evaporites.
