Opis:
The top-priority trends of research in the field of geological engineering presented in the article have been developed in reference to the relevant policy for the years 2004–2010 accepted by the Polish Ministry of the Environment and the Geological Engineering Documentary Commission sessions’ discussions. The analysis of the above mentioned materials shows that main and, at the same time urgent tasks are to gather geological engineering data in the integrated, geospatial databases and to execute cartographic studies necessary for the needs of spatial management and forecasting the environmental changes caused by investment processes. Data concerning evaluation of nationwide hazards of natural and anthropogenic processes should be included in such databases. Concurrently, as a part of adapting Polish legal standards to those of the European Union, it is necessary to prepare regional correlational dependences for the geological engineering classification of main types of lithogenetic soil and rocks covering regional geological variability of Poland in the subgrade and bedrock evaluation. It has also been highlighted in the article that of crucial importance is fast drawing up the rules and methods of documenting geological engineering conditions for building waste disposal sites, marine hydrotechnical structures, mines and other structures shutdown, as well as educating people involved, promoting the role of geological engineering studies in the proper course of investment processes and the necessity of undertaking appropriate legislative actions in order to obtain a systemic placement of such studies in the investment processes.

Carboniferous sandstones and shales encountered in deep boreholes drilled in central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., represent a pseudoflysch i.e. they show facies features of flysch and, simultaneously, are of cratonic provenance. Clastic sediments were derived from a peripheral bulge formed within the East European Craton as a result of stresses exerted by the accretion/thrust wedge advancing up the marginal part of the craton. In central Poland, NW of the Holy Cross Mts., a Variscan foredeep existed. The foredeep was the depositional site of interfingering exo- and pseudoflysch which, from a geodynamic point of view, are equivalent to an outer molasse. Huge masses of Carboniferous deposits (generally corresponding to flysch) from southwestern and central Poland successively represent, moving from SW to NE, Variscan ortho-, exo- and pseudoflysch.

Pollen analysis has revealed the presence of the edmundi morphotype in the Paleogene and Neogene sediments of Central Europe. Its species, characterized by different morphologies, are mainly assigned to two families of extant plants – the Araliaceae and the Mastixiaceae – and compared to pollen of some genera (Diplopanax and Mastixia from the Mastixiaceae, and Aralia, Fatsia and Schefflera from the Araliaceae). The most significant genus for palaeoclimate reconstructions is the extant Diplopanax, whose seeds, similarly as the seeds of other representatives of the Mastixiaceae, appear in the warm phases of the Neogene. The type species of Edmundipollis (E. edmundi) has been compared to Diplopanax pollen. Based on similarities with extant plants, the CA (Coexistence Approach) was determined. The results indicate a very warm and humid subtropical climate (Cfa–Cwa) according to the Köppen classification.

Opis:
Mollusc-bearing deposits at Hrud II (Eastern Poland) accumulated in the western part of a palaeolake of Holsteinian age (MIS 11). The faunal assemblage is typical of freshwater environments and presumably represents a part of the interglacial climatic optimum (Carpinus–Abies Zone). On the basis of its varied composition, the evolution of the water body is described. Reinterpretation of the data from the eastern part of the lake (Hrud I) and combining of the results from both sites enable a wider palaeoecological reconstruction. Fluctuations in lake level, water dynamics and changes in the aquatic vegetation are inferred from quantitative relations between selected molluscs, especially Lithoglyphus jahni, Valvata piscinalis and Bithynia tentaculata, which prevail in the deposits investigated. A predominance of Valvata piscinalis indicates a rise in water level, whereas the communities with abundant Bithynia opercula are typical of a more shallow lake with rich reed fields. Amelioration of the trophic conditions between the pre-optimal and optimal part of the Holsteinian Interglacial can also be recognised.

Opis:
Gypsiferous units occur along the margins of some Paleogene and Neogene basins in Spain. These units accumulated in shallow saline lakes of low ionic concentration. Other gypsiferous facies constitute outer rings of the thick, highly-saline evaporite formations that occupy the central parts of the basins. In some of these gypsum units and rings, large nodules (from 0.5 m to several metres across) of secondary gypsum that originated as replacive or displacive nodular anhydrite are present. Although these occurrences usually show a stratiform arrangement, vertical geometries are observed locally, suggesting ascending circulation of anhydritizing flows. The common characteristics of the large gypsum nodules in the various occurrences indicate that the precursor anhydrite formed in burial conditions from shallow to moderate depths. A few occurrences of large, secondary gypsum nodules in the gypsum units are linked to deep faults or diapiric structures.

The dinosaur footprints cf. Parabrontopodus isp. Lockley, Farlow et Meyer, 1994, attributed to sauropods, have been found in Hettangian (earliest Jurassic) alluvial deposits in Anina (Colonia Ceha Quarry, Resita Basin), belonging to the Getic Nappe in the Southern Carpathians, Western Romania. Heteropodous pes-manus sets and one short, narrow-gauge trackway have been recognized on a large sandstone surface trampled by sauropods. Agreater load was carried by the inner digits of the pes, particularly digit I, and the heel pad is deeply imprinted, which points to a sub-plantigrade pes and gravipodal posture, typical for Eusaropoda. A pentadactyl manus imprint suggestetthat manus digits of early sauropods might have been separate and perhaps more functional when supporting walking on unstable, sticky ground. These tracks, the first find of Jurassic dinosaur footprints in Romania, add an important site to the relatively rare record of earliest Jurassic sauropod footprints. These tracks also confirm that Pangaean islands and peninsulas around the Western Tethys were inhabited by early sauropods. These peninsulas or islands, including a hypothetical "Moesian Island", must have been at least temporarily connected with the mainland. The sizes of the Romanian footprints are similar to the Hettangian Parabrontopodus isp. tracks described from Poland (mainland Pangaea — Eurasian area) and Italy (Tethyan domain) and do not indicate insular dwarfism.

Opis:
Analysis of Silurian graptolite assemblages from 1017 sample horizons in 132 cores (from 65 boreholes) through the Qusaiba Member, Qalibah Formation of Saudi Arabia, provides a refined graptolite biostratigraphy for the Arabian Peninsula comparable in its resolution to that from the British Isles and the Czech Republic. Over 150 graptolite species characterize 11 biozones from the lowermost Rhuddanian lubricus Biozone to the lower Telychian guerichi Biozone, with sub-zonal resolution for several intervals. Graptolite biozonal boundaries and the Rhuddanian-Aeronian and Aeronian-Telychian stage boundaries can be placed with high precision. Detailed analysis of graptolite spatial distribution suggests persistent depth-stratified marine assemblages across the Silurian palaeo-Arabian Plate. Near-surface-dwelling assemblages probably occupied the mixed-layer of Silurian oceans, enabling colonization of shallow shelf environments. They are low-diversity (1-2 species) assemblages characterized by Neodiplograptus, Coronograptus, Neolagarograptus and Stimulograptus species and often are preserved in strata with extensive shelly faunas. Deeper marine assemblages are of higher diversity (up to 15 species per horizon), and are characterized by dorsally curved or helically coiled species of Spirograptus, Demirastrites, Lituigraptus, Rastrites and Torquigraptus. Recognition of depth-stratified graptolite assemblages provides an important tool for establishing palaeo-basin topography and water depth at the time of sedimentary deposition. At the species level, the graptolite assemblages of Saudi Arabia are remarkably similar to contemporaneous faunas from peri-Gondwanan Europe and, from the middle Rhuddanian onwards, also to the Avalonian and Laurentian Llandovery graptolites of the UK.

Nine ammonite species are described in detail, one of which, Binellicerasmichalíki, is new. The species identified indicate the Upper Hauterivian Balearis and Ohmi ammonite zones. The zone of the uppermost Hauterivian, Catulloi Zone, is not documented as far as pseudothurmanniid ammonites are concerned. The lackof developmentally younger representatives of the pseudothurmanniid ammonites neitherin the studied locali ty, nor in other Slovak locali ties, is explained by marked changes in the northern Tethyan margin in Europe duri ng the latest Hauterivian.

Opis:
The Oligocene Arbat alkali intrusions of the Eastern Miandoab are located in the northwestern part of Iran and belong to the Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Arc (UDMA). The intrusions show a ring structure with gabbro-monzogabbro-monzodiorite (mafic units) on the edges, with monzonite-monzosyenite-syenite (felsic units) gradually going towards the central parts. The textures in different rock types are cumulate, granular and laminated. The high values of (La/Sm)n and (La/Yb)n, contents of K, Rb and Cs (positive anomalies normalized on the basis of the primitive mantle), low concentrations of Hf, Nb, Zr and Ta (negative anomalies), and the changes in Th/Nb, Th/Ta, La/Nb and Ce/Pb ratios along with the geochemical and tectonic setting evidence exhibit a subduction-modified mantle origin for the formation of these rocks. Accordingly, the intrusions were formed between the Central Iran and the Arabian plates as a result of the partial melting of a mantle wedge at a syn-collision or post-collision arc-related environment. Our data suggested that, after the end of the oblique Neotethys subduction and during/after the continental collision, the break-off or rollback of the Neotethys slab beneath western Iran, in the Oligocene, might have occurred. Such a process led to the change in the geothermal gradient of the mantle wedge because of the subduction fluids, transtension, pressure reduction along the SE-trending lateral depth strike-slip fault zones in the upper part of the mantle wedge, decompression partial melting at the mantle, and the resulting formation of a mafic potassium-rich melt. The mafic magma was injected into crustal magma chambers; probably, the fractional crystaliization and partial contamination occurred with crustal components, forming the intermediate and felsic rocks in the intrusions. Geochemical evidence related to the variations in the ratios of Th/Yb, Ta/Yb, Rb/Y, and Nb/Y and Harker variation diagrams along with the spider diagrams confirmed fractional crystallization and partial FC (fractional crystallization) and AFC (assimilation and fractional crystallization) in the intrusions.

Early Cretaceous calpionellid samples were collected at the ammonoid-bearing Hochkogellocality in the southern most part of the Reichraming Nappe (Ebenforst Syncline, Northern Calcareous Alps). The microfossil fauna sampled from limestone parts of the Rossfeld Formation indicates an early Valanginian age. The standard Calpionellites Zone (with darderi and major subzones) coincides with the early Valanginian ammonoid zones of Busnardoites campylotoxus and Tirnovella pertransiens. The deposition of the limestones in this area occurred in an unstable environment disturbed by gravitational transport which accounts for the different sedimen tary components and accompanying fossils in the accumulated layers, transported from a source area situated to the south.

This paper describes in detail palynological data from the Carboniferous siliciclastic rock succession from the Siciny IG 1 and Marcinki IG 1 boreholes (SW Poland), that allow reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy. Two rock series of different ages were recognized. Rocks from the Siciny IG 1 section were assigned to the upper Arnsbergian–Alportian (the Lycospora subtriquetra–Kraeuselisporites ornatus (SO) Biozone) and the Bolsovian (the Torispora securis–Torispora laevigata (SL) Biozone). In the upper part of the Carboniferous section in the Marcinki IG 1 section the upper Arnsbergian–Alportian and Duckmantian interval (the Lycospora subtriquetra–Kraeuselisporites ornatus (SO) and the Microreticulatisporites nobilis–Florinites junior (NJ) biozones respectively) were recognized, although the quality of the palynological data from the latter borehole was generally poor. These results conflict with a Viséan age for these rocks interpreted from fossil marine macrofaunas and indicate the reworked nature of the macrofaunas. Possible means of the macrofaunal reworking, sedimentary environment and thermal history, based on the palynological data, are discussed. Repetition of the stratigraphical succession, probably due totectonic deformation of the rocks in both sections, is demonstrated and indicate a post-Bolsovian age for the deformation event.

Opis:
The paper presents the hardgrounds and some other correlative discontinuity surfaces found in Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Maastrichtian) borehole sections of northern Poland. They were briefly described, and depositional environment was identified for both the underlying deposit (UD) and the overlying deposit (OD). The significance of these features for both basin-wide correlations and broadly understood sequence stratigraphic techniques is highlighted. They were correlated with other major discontinuity surfaces identified in boreholes of northern Poland in both drill cores and well logs if such identification was reliable based on geophysical borehole data. All these discontinuity surfaces were referred to the boundaries of the individual depositional cycles determined within the Upper Cretaceous succession: K3-II/K3-III, K3-III/K3-IV, K3-IV/K4-I, K3-IV/K4-II, K4-I/K4-II (or II or IV or V), K4-III/K4-IV (or V), K4-IVa/K4-IVb, probably K4-IVb/K4-V, and K4-V/Pc-I. The discontinuity surfaces can be related to both sea level fluctuations and tectonic activity during the Subhercynian phases. Most of them developed in relatively calm sedimentary conditions, outside the central part of the Mid-Polish Trough. The exceptions are three hardgrounds from the Człopa–Szamotuły Zone, which seem to be associated mainly with the Late Cretaceous tectonic (including salt tectonics) activity of this zone. The most common UD/OD configuration of sedimentary environments is the open-marine carbonate shelf both beneath and above the discontinuity surface. The second most common situation is the open-marine carbonate shelf beneath and the open-marine shelf with carbonate-siliceous sedimentation above. The gaps at the surfaces span variously long intervals, ranging from short periods (spanning a fraction of a depositional cycle) to long periods (comprising one or more depositional cycles). The position of the discontinuity surfaces facilitates searching for any possible hiatuses in the sections of other boreholes, and paying attention to local changes in sediment distribution patterns, and local tectonic activity.

An investigated area is located in the middle reach of the WartaRiver valley. During drillings in the Bór site organic deposits such as detritous calcareous gyttja and calcareous detritous gyttja has been documented in a depth between 14,9 and 16,6 m. The organic deposits are covered by mineral, mostly sandy deposits. The accumulation took place in the small lake formed as an abandoned channel. Palynological analysis led to conclusion that biogenic accumulation began at the end of Wartanian and took place at least to the Eemian Interglacial optimum. Results of palynological, Cladocera and geochemical analysis inform about water level changes and increasing of trophy status of the reservoir. Presence of Mesozoic substratum very close to the palaeolake bottom influenced significantly chemical features of the organic deposits. As Eemian organic deposits are uncommon in the Warta River valley, the Bór site seems important for palaeogeographical reconstructions of the Warta River valley during Eemian Interglacial.

The shallow marine deposits of the Late-Middle Jurassic (Callovian–Oxfordian) Jumara Formation of the Gangeshwar Dome of Mainland Kachchh, India, comprise a succession of ~247 m thick clastic sediments with few non-clastic bands and contain a diverse group of ichnofauna. The succession is subdivided into seven lithofacies, viz., laminated shale-siltstone facies (LSS), sheet sandstone facies (SS), herringbone sandstone facies (HS), bivalve sandstone facies (BS), bioclastic limestone facies (BL), intraformational conglomerate facies (IC) and oolitic limestone facies (OL). The ichnofaunal study shows 29 ichnospecies of 23 ichnogenera including Arenicolites, Bifungites, Bolonia, Chondrites, Didymaulichnus, Diplocraterion, Gyrochorte, Helminthopsis, Isopodichnus, Laevicyclus, Lockeia, Monocraterion, Taenidium, Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Phycodes, Protopalaeodictyon, Rhizocorallium, Skolithos, Thalassinoides, Tisoa, and Zoophycos. These trace fossils are distributed among nine ichnocoenose, characterized by Chondrites, Diplocraterion, Gyrochorte, Ophiomorpha, Rhizocorallium, Skolithos, Taenidium, Thalassinoides and Zoophycos. Their occurrence in the facies corresponds to their trophic and ethological properties. The colonisation of the opportunistic Diplocraterion and the Skolithos ichnocoenose shows a high den¬sity and marks foreshore/nearshore environmental conditions. The Gyrochorte, the Rhizocorallium, the Taenidium and the Thalassinoides ichnocoenose indicate the typically lower energy zone of the shoreface-offshore region. The Chondrites ichnocoenosis indicates fluctuation in bottom water oxygen while the Zoophycos ichnocoenosis typically exploited a calm water niche in the offshore region. These ich-nocoenose recur throughout the sequence and belong to the Skolithos and the Cruziana ichnofacies which marked changes in energy gradient, substrate stability, water depth and mode of life of invertebrate organisms. The study of trace fossil assemblages with sediment characteristics gives a detailed and accurate picture of foreshore to offshore palaeoenvironmental conditions.
