Opis:
Detailed geological and palaeobotanical study of about 400 boreholes through Quaternary deposits in eastern Belarus has enabled the recognition of a number of Middle and Late Pleistocene interglacial sites and demonstrated the stratigraphical position of Alexandrian (Holsteinian) and Muravian (Eemian) Interglacial sediments. These stratigraphic markers are separated by a single glacial sequence, corresponding to the Dnieper (Saalian) Glaciation. This contradicts previous views suggesting the occurrence of two glaciations during the Late Middle Pleistocene in eastern Belarus (Dnieper and Sozh). The glacial sediments represent the recession phases of a glacial stage that may be correlated with the Drenthe Substage of the Saalian Glaciation.

Successions of loess and other deposits in the Kolodiiv profile, formed during the Eemian Inter glacial and Vistulian Glacial (OIS 5-2), are characterized using the results of heavy mineral analysis. Weathered local carbonate rocks and fluvial deposits (Wartanian Glacial, OIS 6) are used for comparison. It was found that the content of minerals derived from weathered and redeposited Carpathian Flysch increases from bottom to top of the profile. The entire loess succession accumulated under similar lithodynamic conditions and the palaeosols are of similar character.

Opis:
The Upper Cretaceous sequence in the area located between Uniejów, Kłodawa and Ozorków, Central Poland, is dominated by carbonate and carbonate-siliceous deposits. They are represented by limestones, marly limestones, marls and opokas with local gaize intercalations in the uppermost part of the sequence. There is also a complex of Santonian-Campanian clastics immediately adjoining the present-day Mid-Polish Swell near the Kłodawa Salt Diapir. The clastics may represent gravity flow deposits associated with a strong uplift of the Izbica -Kłodawa-Łęczyca Zone due to salt movements during inversion of this structure related to the incipient phase of the Late Cretaceous inversion of the whole Mid-Polish Swell. These processes caused increasing morphological gradients when passing south-westwards to the neighbouring subsiding trough. Detailed sedimentological studies of the clastic series cannot be made due to insufficient material and poor core condition. Investigations of the regional facies distribution and sedimentation, performed both along the areas adjoining the present-day Mid-Polish Swell and in local inversion structures, may help in the elucidation of timing of the incipient tectonic inversion phase of the Mid-Polish Trough which was ultimately transformed into the Mid-Polish Swell during the Early Tertiary.

Opis:
A lithological and palaeomagnetic analysis of Late Weichselian glaciolacustrine deposits from two ancient periglacial lakes was carried out in the valley of the Shuja (S Karelia) and Ust-Pjalka (S-E Kola Peninsula) rivers, NW Russia. The rhythmic structure of the varved clays is interpreted as turbiditic with systematic differences between the proximal and distal areas of accumulation. In the proximal area the textural and structural properties of the deposits towards both distal and (partly) lateral directions are described. It is shown that the proximal varve successions are incomplete while distally they are continuous. The accumulation of one varve (DE rhythm, second order cycle) during one year is consistent with palaeomagnetic data. Significant differences in magnetic parameters and in the palaeomagnetic "records" of declination-inclination between proximal and distal varves are established. Analysis of palaeomagnetic properties was combined with lithological analysis in all sections. Locally, the varved clays in the proximal area could be used for palaeomagnetic research. Taking into account the erosion of underlying deposits by turbidity currents and inclination shallowing, these sediments could not precisely record palaeosecular variation (PSV). The distal varved clays (represented by the DE rhythms) are clearly most useful both for varve-clay chronology and PSV recovery. The palaeomagnetic declination and inclination records are correlated with chrono- and magnetostratigraphy scheme of NW Russia. This paper also examines lithology-dependent "inclination error" and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility in glaciolacustrine sediments.

During many years’ research, the stratigraphy of Quaternary deposits in the area surrounding Konin has elaborated. In the young Quaternary strata the Eemian fossil lakeland was established and the exposed Mikorzyn section was found. Previous geological and palynological analyses of the site prove a nearly complete sequence of Eemian and Vistulian deposits. Furthermore, archival records of drill cores indicate that older interglacial sediments may also have been deposited about 10 metres deeper in this particular area. To test this possibility, a relatively deep test borehole—Mikorzyn 1 was carried out in the distance about 70 metres only. The sedimentological and palynological core analyses prove the Eemian age of examined organic materials. The borehole, established only the presence of ca.10 m offset in the bottom part of the Eemian strata. This fact, as well as other faults and Tertiary coal injections into glacial sediments, confirmed the occurrence of neotectonic activity.

Opis:
It is argued in this paper that late Frasnian global cooling was the first step in the onset of the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age, and that the late Frasnian extinctions are analogous to the early Oligocene (Oi-1) extinctions that took place in the first step in the onset of the Cenozoic Ice Age. It is argued that the physical evidence for the existence of late Frasnian glaciation, like the Oi-1 glaciation, is largely geochemical: the sharp increases in δ18O values and positive δ13C anomalies that occurred in the late Frasnian and earliest Famennian. In addition to the geochemical evidence, also like the Oi-1 glaciation, stratigraphic calculations indicate a major sea-level fall occurred during the late Frasnian and early Famennian, a sea-level fall that is argued to have been glacially produced. It is here proposed that the best possible independent physical evidence for the existence of late Frasnian glaciation, other than the geochemical and sea-level evidence, would be the discovery of ice-rafted debris in marine sediments of late Frasnian age similar to the ice-rafted debris found in Oi-1 marine sediments (Zachos et al., 1992; Ehrmann and Mackensen, 1992).

Opis:
The Upper Silurian-Lower Devonian section of the western part of the Holy Cross Mts. is composed of greywackes of the Niewachlów Beds, Kielce Beds and Miedziana Góra Conglomerates. They are separated from the terrestrial Gruchawka Conglomerates and Barcza Beds by an erosional surface. Depositional structures recorded in the Silurian greywackes indicate the deep-water sedimentary environment of a flysch facies. The uppermost part of the Kielce Beds and the Miedziana Góra Conglomerates accumulated on a submarine delta fan. These deposits correspond to Late Caledonian molasse and are associated with closure of the Late Silurian basin in the Holy Cross Mts. The Gruchawka Conglomerates, containing fish remains, mark the beginning of the Early Devonian marine transgression. Together with the overlying sandstones and mudstones of the Barcza Beds they form the Old Red Sandstone succession. The Late Caledonian unconformity occurs between the Upper Silurian molasse deposits and Lower Devonian Old Red Sandstone facies, and the stratigraphic gap most likely spans the Pridoli, Lochkovian and lower Pragian. Large thicknesses of Silurian greywackes in the NW part of Kielce, and the high degree of thermal maturity of organic matter, indicate a geotectonic affinity of this region with the Łysogóry Block.

Opis:
The European loess profiles provides evidence of changes in climate in the last glacial cycle. The final stage of loess accumulation took place in the youngest part of the last glacial (28 to 12 ka BP). Loess accumulated in two periods: from 28 to 18 ka BP and from 18 to 13 ka BP. These two stages were separated by a short phase of weaker aeolian activity and weak pedogenesis (initial tundra gleyed soils). The loess sedimentation rate can be defined as a mass accumulation rate (MAR ex pressed in g/m2/year). This value was calculated by Frechen et al. (2003) for several dozen loess sites across western and central Europe. In this paper we calculate the MAR for several loess sites in Poland and Ukraine. The MAR distribution across Poland and Ukraine is uneven in these two intervals. The MAR values oscillate between 100 to several thou sand g/m2/year. They markedly in crease eastwards, which may be explained by the latitudinal gradient of periglacial climate in the LateWeichselian (= Late Vistulian). The MAR distribution along a N-S trend confirms its large range in western and central Europe. However, the most easterly profiles (Polish and Ukrainian ones) show less variable thick nesses as the MAR was stable at a relatively low level from several hundred to more than a thou sand g/m2/year. This stability of the MAR characterized both loess-forming intervals in this part of Europe.

Late Jurassic is the key epoch for an idea of the existence of the southeastern segment of the Mid-Polish Trough. New data on the evolution of Upper Jurassic deposits in the Carpathian Foredeep substrate provide information that there is a complete Oxfordian through Valanginian succession in the area of thick Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian deposits, proving the occurrence of the trough. Thickness of the Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian succession is twice to three times smaller than previously assumed. The facies development patterndistinguishes this area from the rest of the Late Jurassic basin. The sponge megafacies ranges up into the lower most Tithonian in this region.Tithonian Štramberk-type reefs occur near the Carpathian thrust front and alongside. The Late Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous facies are latitudinally arranged. Starting from the latest Middle Jurassic, the study area showed strong structural and facies relations to the Tethys do main. The collected data contradict the hypothesis that the Mid-Pol ish Trough continues in the Carpathian Foredeep substrate.

Opis:
In the area of the southern Baltic Sea, the largest and most violent changes in water level took place in Late Glacial and Early Holocene, during the period between 13.0-8.5 ka BP. These changes depended on the varied glacio-isostatic movements between the northern and southern parts of the Baltic Sea, the glacio-eustatic increase in the ocean level and the closing or opening of the connection between the Baltic Sea basin with the ocean. During the Late Glacial and Early Holocene, the sea level changed within an amplitude as wide as 25-27 m. In some extreme cases, the sea level could have fallen at a rate of about 100-300 mm/a, the sea level rise rate reaching up to about 40-45 mm/a. In Late Glacial and Early Holocene, there were three transgressions: during 12.0-11.2, 11.0-10.3 (the Baltic Ice Lake) and 10.2-9.2 ka BP (the Yoldia Sea and the Ancylus Lake). There were also three regressions, setting on 11.2, 10.3 and 9.2 ka BP. During regressions, depending on the real drainage rate and the local gradient of the bottom inclination, the land possibly grew at a rate of 0.3 to 4 km per year. During transgressions, rate of shoreline migration could reach in some cases up to 150-200 m per year. These processes took place on the surface of the sea bottom currently located at the depth of c. 55 to 25 m below sea level and from 30 to 60 km away from the present-day southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Rapid changes of shoreline position are recorded in progradational barrier structures and in the erosion surfaces of the glacial till and glacio-marine clays.

The Late Jurassic Iouaride`ne tracksite has been studied for decades and is well-known for the reference trackway of Breviparopus taghbaloutensis. These siliciclastic flood-plain deposits bear probably more than 1500 tracks, and at least 21 trampled levels: they yield tracks of medium to very large sauropods, possible stegosaurs and theropods. The first accurate description of the footprint association made by biped trackmakers is proposed herein. More than six hundred footprints and more than a hundred trackways has been mapped and analysed; this led to the definition of four tridactyl and two tetradactyl morphotypes, mainly produced by small to very large theropods, while probable small ornithopod tracks are also present. The bipedal footprint association is dominated by medium-large theropods, which are also the most abundant type. The taxonomical attribution of the morphotypes is made difficult by the poor preservation of many specimens. Furthermore, for the most abundant theropod tracks, those with "megalosaurian" affinity, there is also a complex ichnotaxonomical situation, that makes the attributions yet more challenging; however, it was possible to recognize the great affinity of the tridactyl specimens with the Megalosauripus tracks from the Iberian Peninsula and North America. Three-dimensional models were generated from the moulds of the best-preserved specimens to render a more detailed description and for easier access to the specimens.

Digital reconstruction of the evolution of glacial Lake Peipsi, Eastern Estonia, was based on a geographic information system (GIS) method that removed isostatically deformed palaeowater planes fromthe current digital terrain model. A reconstruction of the proglacial water levels was performed with respect to geomorphological correlation of river terraces, raised shorelines and eroded surfaces of various aqueoglacial landforms. The configuration of shorelines, main outlets and water depths of glacial Lake Peipsi, corresponding to the Otepää, Piirissaar, Kaiu and Pandivere–Neva stades during the deglaciation of the Lake Peipsi depression, was simulated. The two approaches used, reflecting the geomorphological correlation of Raukas and Rähni (1969) and Hang (2001), are discussed.

Opis:
Interdisciplinary investigations (pollen and diatom analysis, 14C dating and geological-geomorphological and archaeological data) around Lakes Duba and Pelesa, in SE Lithuania, have elucidated the environmental history and human impact throughout the Late Glacial and Holocene. Aerial photograph interpretations indicate that both lakes are residual basins of one Post-Glacial palaeolake outside the morainic relief of the Nemunas (Weichselian) Glaciation. Pollen assemblages from lacustrine deposits date back to the Older Dryas (Lake Duba) and Alleröd (Lake Pelesa) and cover all chronozones of the Post-Glacial. Diatom analysis has illustrated the palaeoecological conditions in the lakes and helped reconstruct successive water levels throughout the last 12300 radiocarbon years. Diatom abundance and the distribution of the planktonic, benthic and epiphytic species suggest a lowering of Lake Duba and Lake Pelesa at (e.g.) 11900-10900 14C BP, (e.g.) 10000-8100 14C BP and (e.g.) 3700-2500 14C BP. Pollen data suggest that the earliest signs of human impact and local forest clearances data from about (e.g.) 8400-8300 14C BP. The first record of cereal pollen in sediments dates from earlier than (e.g.) 6000 14C BP. Therefore, agriculture was introduced into the area not earlier than the second half of the Midle Neolithic, at about (e.g.) 5000-4400 14C BP. Continous indications of agriculture and progressive clearing of woodland is consistent with the increasing role of a farming economy during the Bronze Age. Since the 1800-1900 14C BP formation of an open canopy, increasing soil erosion and changes in vegetation emphasize the remarkable human impact on the environment.

They have been examined for their pollen, plant macro-remains and geochemistry, as well as radiocarbon-dated. The analyses have allowed reconstructing the evolution of the area and presenting an asynchronous appearance of two lakes. Before lake sedimentation, glaciolimnic sediments from the end of Plenivistulian, at the site of Piotrkowo, was dated. Lacustrine sedimentation started during the Allerød at Gronowo, and during the Preboreal at Piotrkowo. The different age of the two lakes is ascribed mainly to differences in the Late Glacial drainage conditions which directly affected the melting away of dead-ice blocks buried in the channels.

The organic-rich material has been studied from the bottom part of lacustrine sediments of the Lake Kasuciai, western Lithuania. Radiocarbon dates and palaeobotanical data showed that these sediments accumulated between 13,500 and 9000 14C yr BP. The Late Glacial interstadial is defined by the dominance of Characeae and accumulation of carbonate. The Bolling is characterized by the pioneer taxa and the communities of open habitats. During the Allerod pine replaced the light demanding taxa that show development of a closer woodland habitat and dryness of climate. The short period between Bolling and Allerod with increasing representation of Betula and plants typical for the highly eroded habitats could be correlated with Older Dryas. The onset of the Younger Dryas is marked by degradation of the forest cover and expansion of heliophytic grasses. Entire vegetation cover with birch and pine forest was settled during the Preborial. Formation of calcareous sediments and appearance of thermophilous taxa confirm the climatic amelioration.
