Opis:
Volume magnetic susceptibility of soils and alluvial sediments from the eastern Pomeranian region near Gdańsk was investigated. Full set of geochemical analyses had been previously performed for all the samples studied. The results are presented in the form of the susceptibility maps of the topsoil horizon, the subsoil at the depth between 40 and 60 cm and the alluvial sediments. Additionally the differential susceptibility map between topsoil horizon and the subsoil at the depth 40-60 cm has been also constructed. A close correlation is observed between positive anomalies of differential susceptibility and urban areas. This is interpreted as surface anthropogenic pollution. Magnetic susceptibility values higher than 1200 x 10-6 SI units, observed in topsoil horizon, might reflect high contents of such elements as Ba, Co, Mg, Mn and Ni.

Opis:
Detailed morphologic studies of detrital scheelite and gold grains from clastic Cenozoic sediments (alluvial and eluvial-colluvial) in two selected areas of the Lower Silesia region allowed to describe their specific features (size, roundness, lustre, and lack or remnants of primary intergrowths with other minerals). It allows estimating length of hydrodynamic transport and distance from the source area. Such features are also an important tool in determining the source of ore mineralization and to establish the parent area for detrital accumulations. Moreover, electron microprobe (EMPA) investigation of detrital gold allowed to recognized internal structure and chemical composition of placer gold grains. The grains commonly revealed zonal structures due to chemical supergene gold mobility recognized nearly in all studied pan-concentrate samples.

Opis:
A new locomotion (repichnion) trace fossil, Ptychoplasma conica isp. nov., which is composed of chains of hypichnial mounds, is described from Hettangian alluvial sediments in Central Poland. Its occurrence is limited to amalgamated crevasse sand stones. The trace fossil is associated with freshwater bivalves belonging probably to Unionidae. This trace fossil reflects rhythmic (?diurnal) movement of the tracemaker in accordance with the direction of flow in the crevasse channel, where the forward movement took place in the shallow part of a sandstone layer and was interrupted by resting episodes in deeper sediment layer along the mud-sand inter ace. Episodic flood events forced bivalves to produce escape structures, moving from deeper (previous) to upper (later) levels of lateral movements. Some vertical burrows with bivalve body fossils preserved at the bottom suggest a taphonomic burial. P. conica ranges from Late Triassic to Hettangian.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of geomorphological studies and pollen analysis performed for alluvial deposits at 2 sites situated in the Wisłok River valley. The deposits consist of thin layers of organic muds filling palaeochannels or thermo-karst lakes of the Wisłok River, dated at the Interpleniglacial (Grudziądz Interstadial) of the Vistulian Glaciation. These deposits build the lower part of a sand terrace, 8-12 m high, and outliers of this terrace buried by overbank alluvial sediments within a floodplain. The samples for pollen analysis were taken from a natural undercut in the Wisłok River channel and from a sand pit dug to a greater depth. The pollen diagrams prove the existence of trees (forest-steppe) including primarily Pinus sylvestris, Betula t. alba, Pinus cembra and Larix. The diagrams do not show a clear tendency of a plant succession and thus of any distinct climate changes. The sedimentation took place under cool, boreal climate conditions. The occurrence of several layers of organic and sand deposits in the sections does not reflect rhythmic warm/cold climatic oscillations documented in the Interpleniglacial alluvial sequences in Western European rivers, but is a result of vertical channel fluctuations and facies changes.

Opis:
The article presents the results of geological and geomorphological research concerning load-cast structures outcropping in the alluvial terrace sediments of theWisłok River in the Fore-Carpathian Erosional Valley. Given the large dimensions of these structures, reaching 1.5 m in some places, as well as their strong accumulation and diversity (i.e. drop-like and pocket-like structures), the authors attempted to establish the environmental factors that had determined the development of the structures in periglacial deposits of the Weichselian Glaciation. The structures were analysed in two accessible outcrops where sediments are represented by flood rhythmite and organic deposits, overlain by channel sands. Sandy load-cast structures occur in flood rhythmite and loamy deposits. The formation of load-cast structures probably started due to earthquakes in the Upper Pleniglacial period. The various shapes of load-cast structures were constrained by the various physical properties of the sediments and the escape of water during the deformation process.

Opis:
Paleogeography of the lower Przemsza River valley was studied in detail. By means of sedimentological methods, C.exp.14 dating and analysis of archival cartographic sources, the chronology of environmental events has been established, along with the types of the sedimentological processes and indirectly the role of neotectonics in the shaping of the valley. The lower Przemsza River section turned out to be the area where the fluvial processes of the Vistula and Przemsza Rivers took place, which can be seen in the formation of two different lithological types of the overbank facies. These types are of key importance in distinguishing between climatic and anthropogenic phases in the upper Vistula River valley.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of geotechnical properties of cohesive soil recently deposited in Rożnowskie Lake and on the floodplain of the Dunajec River. The results show that cohesive soils of Rożnowskie Lake are represented mainly by silt, clay and silty clay. Sandy silt and silt are deposited predominantly on the floodplain of the Dunajec River. The soils contain a few percent of organic matter, however, there is more organic matter in the sediments of Rożnowskie Lake. The variability of deposited soils is due to different periods of sedimentation on an annual basis. The time of sedimentation on the Dunajec River floodplain is short and associated with flooding during the summer culmination, thus the sediments (sandy silt and silt) are coarsest. In the area of Rożnowskie Lake, sludge sedimentation occurs throughout the year, especially during the spring and summer flood flow. This sludge has finer grain size (silt and clay). The soils show a variation in their vertical profile, and are characterized by a layered structure.

Opis:
Overbank sediment profiles of the channelized and heavily polluted Vistula and Odra rivers were investigated in southern Poland. The sediments are usually represented by sandy layers about a dozen centimetres thick, intercalated with black sandy muds few centimetres thick and rich in organic matter. Accumulation of these sediments started by the end of 19th century. The sediments are contaminated with heavy metals in amounts exceeding background values by two orders of magnitude and contain coal particles dispersed in black layers. These fine sediments initially accumulated over gravel bars at the channel banks due to lateral channel stabilization by stony groynes and bank revetments, constructed in 19th and 20th century. Progressively the sediments, which are up to 4 m thick, became a part of 20–30 m wide floodplain zones along many reaches of the upper Vistula and Odra. The distribution of these sediments is related to the degree of channel narrowing and incision induced by 19th and 20th century channelization.
