Opis:
The distribution, age and correlation of Pleistocene sediments (1.806–0.01 Ma) is presented for an about 1200 km long geologic cross-section that extends from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and crosses the eastern part of the Polish Vistula drainage basin, the Dniester and Upper Pripyat drainage basins of the Ukraine, and also parts of the Russian Kaliningrad District andMoldova. In the vicinity of Warsaw, the oldest Pleistocene deposits comprise preglacial fluvio-lacustrine sediments of the Otvockian (Eburonian) cooling and Celestynovian (Waalian) warming stages that equate in the south with the Berezan and Kryzhaniv horizons, composed of loessy clays, silts and red-brown palaeosol. Along the cross-section, deposits of 8 main glaciations correlate with a similar number of main loesses (Narevian–Ilyichivsk, Nidanian–Pryazovsk, Sanian 1–Sula, Sanian 2–Tiligul, Liviecian–Orel, Krznanian–Dnieper 1, Odranian–Dnieper 2–Tyasmyn, Vistulian–Valday) that are separated by 7 main intra-loess palaeosols that developed during the main interglacial periods (Augustovian–Shirokino, Małopolanian–Martonosha, Ferdynandovian–Lubny–Solotvin, Mazovian–Zavadivka–Sokal, Zbójnian–Potagaylivka, Lubavian–Lublinian–Kaydaky–Korshiv, Eemian–Pryluky–Horokhiv). The first three interglacials are megainterglacials, which possibly include cool intervals during which ice sheets did not advance beyond Scandinavia. All glaciations and loesses, as well as interglacials and palaeosols that are considered asmain climatostratigraphic units of the Pleistocene of Central Europe, are grouped into climatic cycles and megacycles that correlate with corresponding units of Western Europe.

Opis:
The study focuses on sand grain properties in different parts of a beach-dune system built entirely of heavy mineral particles. These properties are related to: (1) resistance of particular minerals to weathering and abrasion, (2) hydraulic sorting in the swash zone, and (3) aeolian sorting during grain transport inland from the upper beach. The main waterlain and windlain sand properties depend on settling velocity which results from grain density (reflecting grain mineralogy), size, shape and roundness. The study was performed on the beach and dunes at Patea on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, which are comprised of heavy minerals assemblage containing a ferromagnetic (dominated by titanomagnetite) and non-ferromagnetic (mainly pyroxene and amphibole) fractions. The result demonstrates that three zones of different sand properties can be distinguished: (1) a lower swash zone dominated by non-ferromagnetic, larger and more angular particles which are carried back from the upper swash zone down the foreshore by the backwash; (2) an uppermost swash zone and beach with almost 100% of ferromagnetic, smaller and more rounded particles deposited at the back of the beach by the uprush, which during high tide and storms can reach the cliff toe, and can be reworked by wind; and (3) a climbing dune composed of a more poorly sorted mixture of non- and ferromagnetic particles. In terms of both mineralogy and grain size and shape, the dune sand is less uniform than the beach sand. Aeolian segregation resulted here in sand textural features opposite to those found in dune sands composed of light minerals. The results highlight the density-dependent variability of grain size and shape of beach-dune deposits consisting of only heavy minerals, and broaden our understanding of mechanisms of sedimentary processes which is particularly important when reconstructing older sedimentary successions.

Several sections record the relation between the “black flysch” and Upper Cretaceous red shales in the Grajcarek thrust-sheets. In all the sections studied the “black flysch” appears in the core of imbricated folds or thrust-sheets, whereas the limbs are composed of Upper Cretaceous deposits. The transitional beds between the “ black flysch” and the Upper Cretaceous red shales are composed of green and black bituminous shales, green and red radiolarites and cherty limestones. Biostratigraphical investigations have revealed a similar type and sequence of microfauna assemblages in all the sections studied and significant redeposition of Jurassic calcareous benthic foraminifera, calcareous nannoplankton, molluscs, sponge spicules and crinoid elements. The Cretaceous age (Aptian/Albian-?Cenomanian) of the “black flysch” is shown by the presence of agglutinated foraminifera and microfacies data. These deposits are underlain by a Kimmeridgian-Aptian radiolarite/limestone condensed succession and overlain by Turonian-Campanian hemipelagic red shales and Maastrichtian/Lower Paleocene conglomerates and thick-bedded silicilastic turbidites of the Jarmuta Formation. Such a sequence of deposits is typical of the Outer Carpathian basins and records the global Mid/Late Cretaceous phenomena in the world ocean, followed by the Cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds.

Opis:
We describe the organic petrography, palynology and Rock-Eval pyrolysis values of lacustrine black shales termed the Anthracosia Shales (Upper Carboniferous/Lower Permian) in the Intrasudetic Basin (Sudetes, SW Poland). Samples were taken from cores of two boreholes: Rybnica Leśna PIG 1 and Ścinawka Średnia PIG 1. Maceral composition, miospore assemblage composition, palynofacies and geochemical characteristics of dispersed organic matter in the Anthracosia Shales were used to determine conditions of the environment and to evaluate their petroleum potential. Data from both organic petrography and palynology analyses enabled recognition of three broadly distinct organic associations in these shales: bituminous, humic, and intermediate, while Rock-Eval pyrolysis revealed the presence of bituminous and humic kerogen types I and III. Type I corresponds to the bituminous association, with amorphous organic matter (AOM) dominant in the palynofacies, and type III corresponds to the humic association with phytoclasts prevailing in the palynofacies. The thermal maturity of the organic matter is determined by the values of: (1) vitrinite reflectance VRo = 0.53–0.73%, (2) palynomorph 3–4 colour index, and (3) Tmax = 443–447°C, which indicate oil window maturity. Some of the TOC results (1.6–2.9 wt.%) indicate that the Anthracosia Shales are good and very good petroleum source rocks, though the thickness of this interval is low (4–5 m). Shales with TOC values <0.5 wt.% prevail, and may be classifed as poor source rocks.

Sediments, carbon-datings on seashells, allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the average sea level for some 6000 years on the Taman Peninsula. The current sea level, regionally, appears to be the highest level ever reached on the peninsula. It seems that for the Anapa area and Tchouchtchka Spit area it is possible to propose a sea level curve characterised by a slow, continuous rising during the past 6000 years. On the Taman Peninsula itself, the sedimentary record of this slow ascent has been distorted by a heavy tectonic subsidence. We have identified this neo-tectonic subsidence effect on at least two areas on the peninsula. The south of the peninsula, Burgaz Spit and Vityazevos Lagoon, is the most affected area. The Taman Gulf is an intermediate area. The tectonic subsidence is particularly noticeable from 1500 to 500 BC, which we believe to have been misinterpreted until now, and to be at the origin of the notion of "Phanagorian Regression".

Opis:
The "black flysch" deposits (Szlachtowa Formation at Podubocze near Czorsztyn in Poland), attributed so far to the Pieniny Klippen Basin successions, and at Hałuszowa in Poland as well as at Kamienka in Eastern Slovakia, attributed to the Grajcarek Succession of the Magura Basin, have yielded rich dinoflagellate cyst assemblages consisting of forms both redeposited (from Upper Triassic to Aalenian) and indigenous (Lower Bajocian to Upper Bajocian). An Early to Late Bajocian age of the deposits investigated is thus indicated, and this along with other stratigraphical, sedimentological and tectonic data indicates that all the deposits in question represent the early stages of development of the Magura Basin. The formation of “black flysch” deposits was possibly related to the Early Bajocian uplift of the Czorsztyn Ridge which resulted from the opening of the Magura Ocean. The occurrence of the deposits of the Magura Basin below the overthrusted deposits of the Klippen Basin (Czorsztyn Unit) in the area of study results in a marked change in the structural interpretation of the Pieniny Klippen Belt.

The densely populated northeastern Bulgarian Black Sea coast is a territory of intensive contemporary development. It is, though, marked by considerable recent geological activity along the coastal zone comprising: faulting, earthquakes, landslides, earthflows, rockfalls, ground subsidence, marine erosion and variations of sea level. These are locally exacerbated by the ongoing development, resulting in increased instability. Notably, a part of the coastline has been lost as a result of gravity sliding. Analysis of this recent geological coastal activity, including the landslides, earthflows and rockfalls of 1996-1997, needs be taken into account for the protection of the population and the cultural heritage.

The first suite of epidosite from the Central Sudetic Ophiolites has been discovered in the sheeted dyke complex of the Mount Ślęża ophiolite (SW Poland). Epidosites from the Mount Ślęża ophiolite represent A-type epidosites which metasomatically replaced diabasic sheeted dykes of the Strzegomiany–Kunów Fe-Ti mineralisation zone. They form decimetre-scale elongated pistachio-green patches or veins within single dykes. Their composition (quartz + epidote + titanite) is analogue to Troodos ophiolite end-member epidosite of Cyprus. The pistacite content of epidote range from Ps16 to Ps31 and is similar to those from other ophiolitic epidosites. Titanite is low in Al2O3 (0.61 to 1.10 wt.%) and Fe2O3 (0.43 to 0.63 wt.%) and high in V2O5 (from 0.22 to 0.47 wt.%). The presence of epidosites in the Mount Ślęża ophiolite can be considered as an evidence of its supra-subduction zone (SSZ) affinity. Finally, a direct link between the epidosite formation and the release of base metals from its protolith (Cu, Zn and Co) indicates the possibility of the Cyprus-type volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit (VMS) formation in the Mount Ślęża ophiolite.

It marks, at the species level, a prominent faunal turnover of ammonoids from the Prolobites delphinus Zone into the Platyclymenia annulata Zone. An analysis of ammonoid genera distribution, phylogenetic relationships, andmorphospace occupation demonstrates that the "annulata Event" does not correspond to a crisis of the group and does not fulfill the criteria of a major biotic event.

Geochemical analysis of the 50 samples of the Middle Triassic black shales (organic carbon-rich siltstones) has been carried out. The black shale samples (up to 4.92 % TOC) have been collected in the stratotype profile of the Bravaisberget Formation, west Spitsbergen. In the examined profile, the black shales occur exclusively in the Passhatten Member (the lower and middle interval of the Bravaisberget Formation). Black shale samples have been analyzed in respect to degree of pyritization (DOP), isotopic composition of pyrite sulphur (34S) and organic carbon content (TOC). The main goal of the research was to examine a degree of oxygenation and dynamics of a sea-bottom environment. DOPvalues from lower section of the Passhatten Member show wide variation, ranging from 0.29 to 0.92. In upper section of the member, the obtained DOPvalues show narrower range of variations, from 0.77 to 0.98.Wide variations of DOPwere caused by temporary coexistence of oxic and anoxic bottom currents. In turn, narrow DOP variations indicate predominance of stratified water and anoxic bottom currents. DOP/34S and DOP/TOC ratios imply that syngenetic and early diagenetic pyrite precipitation during accumulation of the lower section of the Passhatten Member was controlled by availability of organic carbon and reactive iron, whereas accumulation of the member's upper section was controlled exclusively by availability of reactive iron.

The one from the Szlachtowa Formation (previously known as the "black flysch") is dominated by specimens representing the genera Dissiliodinium and Nannoceratopsis. The age of dinoflagellate cysts from this lithostratigraphic unit can be assumed as the Aalenian-Bajocian. Another assemblage occurs in the Opaleniec Formation. Being taxonomically more diverse, it contains several species including Ctenidodinium combazii, C. ornatum, Endoscrinium asymmetricum, Epiplosphaera gochtii, E. reticulata, Atopodinium prostatum, Adnatosphaeridium caulleryi. Age-range of this assemblage can be estimated as the Bajocian-Bathonian. No indications of Jurassic fossil redeposition that could justify suggestions of Cretaceous age of these lithostratigraphic units have been found.

Opis:
The pericratonic Silurian shale succession in Poland, despite its reasonably well-constrained geological framework, entails a number of contentious issues that need to be resolved before this emerging shale gas play will enter a stage of successful development. The succession is thought to have originated in a Caledonian foredeep encroaching distally onto a pericratonic shelf ramp. However, the geochemical signature of the mudrocks is consistent with a cratonic rather than orogenic sourcing, the proximal part of the foredeep basin-fill is apparently missing, and the shale succession juxtaposes in part across the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone against suspected terranes with no evidence of Silurian tectonism. Organic-rich Llandovery– Wenlock shales form a NW-SE striking central belt that is increasingly calcareous toward the craton (NE) and more silty toward the inferred orogen (SW), with the TOC content decreasing in both directions perpendicular to the strike. The TOC trend seems consistent with the deep-downlap model of black shale deposition suggested for many Paleozoic foredeep basins, but does not quite agree with the outer neritic to upper bathyal depths assumed for the shale deposition. Preliminary results from three wells drilled by Orlen Upstream in the Lublin Basin indicate that the Llandovery–Wenlock shales were deposited on a distal shelf ramp sheltered from the craton by shelf carbonate shoals and periodically affected by weak storm-generated currents. The impact of storms on water column resulted in intermittent rises of oxygen content in the otherwise anoxic to dysoxic near-bottom conditions. The prospective interval is dominated by calcite-cemented clayey mudstones showing moderate to good reservoir qualities. It is cut locally by ENE- or NE-dipping, steep fractures favourable for fluid transmissibility, and a NE or SWdirection is most advantageous for artificial fracturing. This interval is capped with a Ludlow calcite-cemented, laminated siltstone that forms a regional correlation marker and shows soft-sediment deformations attributable to gravitational collapse on a NE-dipping paleoslope. If correct, this interpretation might imply the encroachment of orogen-fed clinothem system onto the SW-inclined craton-margin shelf ramp.

In connection with the exploration of zones prospective for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits, numerous studies of source rocks have been conducted in Poland. Stratigraphic examinations are among the basic elements. The main group of fossils occurring in shale successions, being a potential source of hydrocarbons, is graptolites. This paper describes the assemblages of graptolites from Ordovician and Silurian deposits and shows their importance for the stratigraphy of shale complexes. Due to their abundance and rapid evolution, graptolites are an excellent tool for biostratigraphic dating, regional correlations and biozonation of rock successions in terms of the high-resolution sequence stratigraphy. The paper presents the significance of taphonomic research of graptolites to identify zones of increased accumulation of hydrocarbons in rocks. It has been found that graptolites are an equally important instrument, in addition to elevated TOC values or increased gamma ray radiation on well logs, that allows identification of potential source rocks for hydrocarbons, including shale gas.

Geological studies and prospecting for useful ore mineral deposits have been conducted by special research institutions that prepare information about their reserves and output profitability. The University of Geological Studies in Beijing, with about 40,000 students, plays a key role in this activity. For example, a development of both reforms in extracting bituminous coal and gold deposits was discussed.
