Opis:
The study analyses and compares the Polish, German and French translations of Lakoff and Johnson’s book Metaphors We Live By. Being a specialist publication in linguistics, it requires particular precision in translation. Special attention is paid to the ways of rendering metaphors in the target languages (TLs), simultaneously preserving the underlying concepts and making them sound natural to TL readers. As the results show, the translators managed to preserve most of the metaphors making the necessary changes, so the TL examples of metaphors can be said to be both equivalent to the SL ones and adequate in the TL.

Opis:
The relationship between the word and sound seems best exemplified in song. The indefinite and semantically broad meaning of music becomes more specific and precise thanks to words, which are believed to belong to a more conventionalised semiotic system. However, in the process of singable translation this intrinsic connection between the word and sound may become distorted because of various reasons, including the question of the target context or the profile of target audiences and their expectations. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of strategies used in translating foreign songs presented in four early episodes of the entertainment show Muzyka lekka, łatwa i przyjemna, aired on Polish National Television since the 1960s. Apart from global observations drawn from the overview of translation strategies across the analysed episodes, the paper presents also a more explanatory and multimodal analysis of singable translations of English-language songs and highlights the problem of context-driven constraints.

Opis:
The management of errors or defects of the source text is limited by the provisions of the Act on Experts, Interpreters and Translators in force in the Slovak Republic. The translator can choose different approaches, while it must be oriented according to the communicative situation, follow the requirements of the client – from the principle of garbage in, garbage out to active error correction. The fact that it is an (oral) interpretation or a (written) translation can also play an important role. All options have pitfalls and the choice of a solution requires a dynamic approach and an experienced translator. This paper deals with defects and errors in the source text in court interpretation and translation, especially in the conditions defined by the legislation of the Slovak Republic. It presents professionally satisfactory solutions from the point of view of the interpreter and translator, as well as the expectations of judges, which are the results of surveys.

Linguistic Multi-Level Analysis of Literary Texts : A Cognitive Linguistic Translation-Oriented Modification of the DIMEAN Mode

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to investigate the possibility (1) to harmonize the linguistic multi-level discourse analysis model DIMEAN by Warnke/Spitzmüller (2008) with M. H. Freeman’s (2000, 2006) cognitive approach to literary texts and translation; and (2) to include into the DIMEAN model the notion of subjectification/objectification as proposed by Langacker (1985). For this purpose, the science-fiction story “BLIT” (1988) of the so-called Basilisk series by D. Langford is to be examined. It is anticipated that the proposed modifications/enhancements of the DIMEAN model will make it possible to better reconstruct the conceptual and linguistic universe of the text under examination. It seems that such reconstruction, to be comprehensive and conducted in a minimally subjective manner, should be done according to clear criteria applied in a well-ordered analysis. The DIMEAN model appears to be well-suited for the purposes of such text analysis since it is clearly organized and provides a comprehensive (yet open-ended) list of aspects. Although the model initially was not designed for a literary text analysis, I share the opinion of Ulla Fix (2016), who, in her article, shows that DIMEAN can successfully be applied to literary texts. The results of the examination show that the proposed mode of text examination allows to identify salient features of the text-world, especially those to be translated, and issues potentially problematic for translation.

Opis:
The paper aims to describe the current methods in process-oriented research of translation and to show the distinctive nature of computer game localization. A localization assignment confronts the translator with multi-modal material. On the one hand, it means concentration on the verbal content, but on the other hand this verbal layer and other semiotic channels interpenetrate one another and need to be taken into account together as equally important parts of the communicational goal. The paper evaluates the technical instruments and methods of translation process analysis. The study of such instruments and methods should be conducted in an environment that is as neutral and as close to the reality of the translation process as possible, with access to common tools used by translators, including digital sources and computer-bound translation aids. The translation process research data available today give an overview of the methods used for observing the steps in the process, the decisions made by the translators and the usability of their tools. The research focus here is on the decision making and perception in the transfer of verbal content to the multisemiotic and transmedia context. The examples provided in the paper refer to the specific problems encountered in the author’s pilot study simulating a translation task aimed at localizing narration and dialogues for a popular computer game that has been very successful worldwide.

Opis:
The subfield of translation and music has been considered a new area of interest of translation studies, falling under the umbrella term of audiovisual translation. Indeed, it shares similarities with the former, as it is also driven by the need to consider non-linguistic elements of translation. It exemplifies the turn towards multimodality, which has the potential to broaden the scope of research and to highlight the necessity to move beyond textual analyses. However, it seems that this potential leads to some pertinent questions that can challenge the status of fundamental principles of translation studies. This metatheoretical article attempts to demonstrate both challenges and opportunities created by this relatively new subfield and map it onto the current developments of translation studies.

Opis:
In this article, an attempt has been made to analyse the role of parallel texts in certified translation of school documents. For this purpose, second grade promotion certificates awarded in elementary schools in Poland and in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein have been made subject to a comparative analysis. Both the macrostructure of both types of documents and the way in which descriptive evaluations are formulated have been studied. Parallel texts are undoubtedly the most credible source of terminological and text-normative information. They help understand the source text better, they contain up-todate terminology, and are a perfect source of language conventions that apply to specific types of text. However, a comparative analysis of school certificates awarded in the second grade of elementary school showed that when confronted with this type of documents, the translator will not find help in parallel texts. It should not be forgotten that school certificates belong to a group of documents of legal significance, thus performing a specific function. While doing their job, the translators must exercise utmost care for their translations to be as close to the source texts in the given field in the target language as possible, as well as fully understood by native language users.
