Opis:: This paper discusses Polish translations of The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner, which, being a polyphonic novel, relies heavily on the use of linguistic varieties, especially geographical dialects. The article surveys selected approaches to the functions of dialects in literature and outlines the major strategies of dealing with linguistic variation in translation. Examples are drawn from the Polish translations of The Sound and the Fury by Anna Przedpełska-Trzeciakowska (1971) and Jędrzej Polak (1993), which highlight the translators’ changing assumptions on the dialect markedness as reflected in the choice of the strategy and particular linguistic features of translation. Both a qualitative and quantitative analysis is performed, leading to a conclusion that there are significant differences between the translators’ choices and the overall markedness of dialects in the Polish texts. We conclude that Polak’s overall style is more diverse and more colourful, thus more faithfully grounded in the grim reality of Yoknapatawpha County in the first half of the 20th century, and closer to the polyphonic character of the original.

Opis:: Das Thema des Beitrags sind ausgewählte musikalische Fachwörter, die in der deutschen und tschechischen Publizistik im übertragenen Sinne als Metapher verwendet werden. Als Materialgrundlage dient das größte deutschsprachige Korpus DeReKo (Mannheim) sowie das Tschechische Nationale Korpus (Český národní korpus). Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse stehen sowohl die Kontexte, in denen die untersuchten Termini im übertragenen Sinne benutzt, als auch die Sachverhalte, die mit diesen Termini bezeichnet werden. Gleichzeitig werden die Funktionen analysiert, welche die Fachwörter im jeweiligen Kontext erfüllen. Ein bedeutender Teil des Beitrags enthält außerdem einen kontrastiven Aspekt, indem die Verwendung dieser Fachwörter in ihrer metaphorischen Bedeutung in deutschen journalistischen Texten mit ihrer Verwendung in tschechischen Texten gegenübergestellt wird. Dies ermöglicht, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Verwendung von Metaphern in beiden Sprachen aufzudecken. Eine Frequenzanalyse gibt schließlich Aufschluss darüber, wie verbreitet dieses Phänomen in den deutschen und tschechischen Medien ist. Dabei wird nicht nur der aktuelle Gebrauch berücksichtigt, sondern auch die zeitliche Entwicklung, um Veränderungen im Laufe der Jahre zu identifizieren.
The topic of this article is selected musical terms that are used metaphorically in German and Czech journalism. The largest German-language corpus, DeReKo (Mannheim) and the Czech National Corpus (Český národní korpus) serve as the material basis for this study. The analysis focuses on the contexts in which the examined terms are used metaphorically, as well as the concepts they refer to. At the same time, the functions that these technical terms fulfil in their respective context are examined. A significant portion of the article also includes a contrastive aspect by comparing the use of these technical terms in their metaphorical sense in German journalistic texts with their use in Czech texts. This allows for the identification of similarities and differences in the use of metaphors in both languages. Finally, a frequency analysis provides insights into how widespread this phenomenon is in the German and Czech media. The study takes into account not only current usage but also temporal development to identify changes over the years.

Opis:: Positioning Theory represents a useful approach for studying cultural conceptualizations and patterns of language use. The notion could also be implemented in cross-cultural research, for example in contrastive discourse studies. Nevertheless, cross-cultural studies of positioning are rare. The aim of this paper is to elaborate foundations for further methodological considerations and practical applications of the Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies. It gives theoretical considerations, reflects existing literature where the notion is implemented in discourse studies and presents examples from a pilot study conducted to analyse the cross-cultural potential of positioning. By doing so, it identifies the possibilities and methodological challenges of the notion that arise when it is implemented in contrastive discourse analysis, beyond its initial role in Interaction Analysis. The implementation of Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies seems useful to shed light on specific cultural positions as well as formal and functional patterns of discursive positioning practices and resources. A contrastive discourse analysis that aims at cross-culturally comparing positioning activities requires extensive reflections on the analytical and methodological as well as theoretical levels. A requirement for the design of such studies is the use of operationalizable categories as analysed objects. Further challenges emerge regarding implicit positioning and the need to include cultural knowledge.
Die Positionierungsforschung stellt einen nützlichen Ansatz für die Untersuchung kultureller Konzeptualisierungen und Sprachgebrauchsmuster dar, der sich auch für kulturvergleichende Studien anbieten würde. Positionierung kann sich etwa für die kontrastive Analyse von Diskursen nützlich erweisen. Trotzdem erscheinen kontrastive Untersuchungen von Positionierungsaktivitäten selten. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, Grundlagen für weitere Überlegungen und praktische Anwendungen des Positionierungsansatzes in der kontrastiven Diskurslinguistik herauszuarbeiten. Dabei geht es darum, Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen des ursprünglich gesprächs- und interaktionsanalytischen Positionierungsansatzes für seine Anwendung in kontrastiven Diskursanalysen sichtbar zu machen. Zu diesem Zweck werden theoretische Überlegungen und eine Auswertung diskurslinguistischer Arbeiten, die sich der Positionierungstheorie bedienen, vorgenommen. Zugleich werden Beispiele für die kontrastive Anwendung des Ansatzes gegeben, die aus einer Pilotstudie zum kulturvergleichenden Potenzial von Positionierungsforschung kommen. Die Implementierung des Positionierungsansatzes in die kontrastive Diskurslinguistik erscheint nützlich, um spezifische kulturelle Diskurspositionenals auch formale und funktionale Besonderheiten sprachlicher Positionierungspraktiken und -ressourcen zu beleuchten. Eine kontrastive diskurslinguistische Analyse, die auf den Vergleich von Positionierungsaktivitäten abzielt, verlangt einer vertieften Reflexion auf der analytisch-methodischen und auf der erkenntnistheoretischen Ebene. In diesem Zusammenhang ist es eine Anforderung für die Ausgestaltung einer kontrastiven diskurslinguistischen Positionierungsuntersuchung, operationalisierbare Kategorien als den Untersuchungsgegenstand zu bestimmen. Weitere Herausforderungen zeigen sich in Hinsicht auf implizite Positionierungen und die Notwendigkeit, kulturelles Wissen miteinzubeziehen.

Opis:: This paper presents an overview of the activities and results of the European Network of German and Contrastive Linguistics (GerCoLiNet), which was part of the European University Alliance 4EU+ (May 2021 – June 2022). With the cooperation of five European universities (Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, Prague, Warsaw) as well as the Institute for German Language (Mannheim) as an external partner, the network put together a training programme for MA and PhD students of German language and literature at the universities involved in the project. Developed within the framework of contrastive linguistics, the programme takes into account empirical approaches to both theoretical and applied aspects with special attention paid to the fields of Corpus Linguistics, Lexicology, Lexicography, and Discourse Analysis. In keeping with the basic ideals of Flagship 2, i.e. Europeanness, data literacy and multilingualism, particular emphasis was placed on networking among students and young academics within the 4EU+ Alliance. In this paper I first discuss the role and the importance of German, the exclusive lingua franca within the project, as an identity-forming element. Then, I explain the four main phases of the project; finally, I outline some innovative teaching strategies which were used to promote and increase interaction between partners as well as between the students involved in the project.
