- Katarzyna Waligóra’s chapter The Convention of Freak Show as a Strategy against Exclusion attempts to analyse two theatre projects: Jérôme Bel’s Disable theater (2012) and Christoph Schlingensief’s Freakstars 3000 (2004). Waligóra emphasises a subversive approach to paratheatrical form of freak shows, utilised against their original aim of ridiculing the otherness and in favour of an inclusive approach to disabled people. Bel’s and Schlingensief’s projects, however different given their artistic variety, are strongly against the belief that disabled people be protected against the viewers’ gaze— which is shown as constructed upon a fallacious ethical premise that leads to censorship and further limitations of freedom of the disabled who, all in all, should be considered as capable of making independent decisions and taking care of themselves.
