Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to attempt the answer to the question of how the soul comes to know, not as a form of the body, but as a subsistent form, independent in its existence from the body, but dependent on its own created act of being (ipsum esse). We will be interested in the question of how the separated soul comes to know: Whether the two intellectual powers that are naturally in the soul - the possible intellect and the active intellect - will realize their acts, and therefore whether the soul will come to know at all, and whether it will come to know individual reality? There will be a theological theme in the paper, that is, a theme determined by the issue of the completion of the human structure in the body (the resurrection of the body) and the related beatific vision, which is the achievement of the end of human intellectual activities. It seems that the question of anima separata is not a purely speculative problem, since it contains the answer to the question of understanding human nature, an answer that is most relevant to philosophy in its practical field. For Aquinas, the existence of a separated soul, suspended, as it were, between existence in an animated body and existence in a glorified body, is “hypothetical”, and the humanity of such an entity is incomplete. However, given that Thomas is essentially considering real and not possible entities, the topic of the existence and workings of the separated soul should not be within the field of his subject matter. It seems, however, that Thomas was interested in confronting such a theme, which would reveal the uniqueness of human nature also in this aspect.

Opis:
In the philosophy inspired by Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas there are some controversies concerning the animation of human embryo. This is connected with a lack of clarity as to its potentiality, and in particular the so-called inner potentiality. In clarifying these difficulties what is essential is to understand what the soul itself is. And here there appear some differences between Aristotle and Aquinas. In the paper, the author explains this issue and proposes an original concept of inner potentiality of embryo. It consists in two interdependent dynamisms: synchronic and diachronic.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to approach the mind- body problem in the context of philosophy of Aquinas, especially in the context of his understanding of hylomorphism. Disproportion between the issues of the philosophy of mind and Thomas's position are not to the extend which would unable us to see at the variety of questions from his perspective discussed nowadays by philosophers. On the contrary, Thomas' stance might be an attractive solution with regard to positions already fixed (established)- materialism and dualism. What follows in this paper are four issues: the problem of causative interaction between soul and body, the question of cognition of other senses, the issue of personal identity, and at least, the issue of qualia. All these questions, contemporary discussed, find their answers in Aquinas' explanation which points out the most proper understanding of human being, which is defining a human being as a person.

problem of universals
MS. BJ 2118
Opis:
Presented paper contains the critical edition of the question Utrum universal nihil sit aut posterius suis singularibus of the Collectanea de anima preserved in MS. BJ 2118. Collectanea de anima is a provisional title of the collection of 6 questions dealing with the problem of the soul, composed in Krakow in the 2nd half of the 15th century. This manual has a heterogenic character, since every question differs from the others regarding its form, multidimensionality of undertaken issues and the degree of doctrinal independence. Surely, the 3rd question edited here (precisely its part that has been preserved till today, i.e. the introduction and first passage of articulus 1) is not too original work and does not include any remarkable statements. But yet, it is an important testimony of work of compilers, that nowadays only uncommonly is a subject of studies. The edited text in general is doctrinally dependent: first of all, it is based on the works by Thomas Aquinas, Albert the Great and Alexander Bonini of Alexandria (the author explicitly quotes these sources), but also on treatises by Heymericus of Campo and Pseudo-Aquinas (their works are not induced by the author). Concerning the substance of the edited question, the most interesting and “original” is a kind of ignorance of the historical background of the problem of universals and the occurrence of quite numerous mistakes. Mostly they can be easily explained, since they often arise from improper decipheration of abbreviation, overinterpretation or basing on a corrupted source. The accumulated mistakes lead the author to draw his own (singular) conclusions, that all testify the correctness of the Aristotle’s sentence: Parvus error in principio maximus erit in fine.
