Opis:
Andrzej Fischinger worked for 50 years in the Royal Collection at Wawel. He began his work while he was still a student of art history at the Jagiellonian University. At first, from 1948, he worked in the Educational Section, and later became the curator of the Crown Treasure and Goldsmithing Section, and later the head cataloguer. In 1990, he assumed the function of vicedirector and the function of conservator at Wawel. He fulfilled these duties until his retirement in 1997, but even after that he watched over the progress of renovation work, which was being carried out according to his program. Thanks to him, a full renovation of the cathedral and castle on Wawel were completed. Fischinger felt that conservation must be done in its entirety, based on multi-dimensional scientific research, under the watch of artists and society in a fight to preserve national heritage, as opposed to superficial and shoddy reconstruction. He treated his work as a kind of mission which he fulfilled all his life. In Fischinger’s rich legacy, issues of cataloging and conservation occupy prominent places. His achievements were recognized and appreciated. He received the Knight’s Cross, the Officer’s Cross, and the Commodore’s Cross of the Rebirth of Poland, and many other orders and awards. He was active in the Public Committee for the Restoration of Krakow’s Historic Sites, the Commission of Art History in the Polish Academy of Science, the Polish Academy of Skills, the Association of Lovers of Krakow, and the Association of Art Historians, in whose Head Administration he fulfilled the function of vice-president several times. He was also active in Solidarity. After the illegalization of the labor union during Marshall Law, he made his apartment available for conspiratorial gatherings. Andrzej Fischinger died on the 18th of June, 2005.

Nie tylko art déco
Opis:
On 6-8 October 2011, the 7th international conference on the art of stained glass was held in Rzeszów, organised once again by the “Ars Vitrea Polona” Association of Stained Glass Enthusiasts, this time in cooperation with the Centre for Contemporary Sacred Art Documentation at the Faculty of Art of the University of Rzeszów. The main theme was the art of stained glass of the interwar period. A very interesting, varied picture of Polish stained glass craft of the time emerged from nearly 30 papers presented on the topic. It confirmed the rightness of the thesis put forward in the conference’s title that back then, the Art Déco style was just one of the numerous variants of the Polish stained glass art, situated somewhere halfway between the most conservative and the most avant-garde tendencies and widely accepted by the audience of the time. The meeting in Rzeszów gathered a representative group of Polish stained glass scholars and experts (mainly from Kraków, Katowice and Wrocław), speakers from Lviv and Chicago and a few participants who have only just started their research in the field. During the conference, several theoretical and synthesis papers were presented, as well as – in most cases – papers contributing to further research, discussing selected examples of stained glass art, designers and workshops. The prevailing subjects centred around the Upper and Lower Silesia regions and south-eastern Poland, and works from the areas of Greater Poland and Pomerania were mentioned on occasion. The proceedings, held in the building of the University of Rzeszów Library, were accompanied by an exhibition in the local Art Exhibitions Bureau, entitled In statu nascendi visum and dedicated to Kraków’s stained glass artists of the second half of the 20th century, as well as a tour of places connected with the sacred stained glass art of Rzeszów and Łańcut, organised on the third day of the conference. The conference also provided an opportunity to promote new publications by its co-organisers: a book published by the Association, Witraże secesyjne. Tendencje i motywy (Art Nouveau Stained Glass. Tendencies and Motifs) (the outcome of the previous session on stained glass, held in 2009 in Łódź), and the 3rd issue of the Sacrum et Decorum academic journal of the 19th– and 20th–century sacred art, prepared by the Centre.

Opis:
The reconstrution o f the Golden Hall in Augsburg’s Town-Hall was the subject o f an international seminar held on March 8 and 9, 1978 on the initiative o f Augsburg’s Municipal Council. The Town-Hall at Augsburg, a world-known ediffice with magnificent interiors, was erected in the years 1615—1624 by Elias Holl (1575— —1646), an outstanding architect. Utterly burnt down in 1944, from the top down to the dome o f the vestibule o f the ground floor, the Hall was roughly rebuilt by 1955 and after restoration works it regained its exterior décor. The rebuilding o f the interiors carried out in 1958—1962 has left, however, open the question o f restoring former decor. The discussion held at the seminar showed that while the question o f restoring exterior and interior architectural decorations, especially o f preserving genuine parts o f the elements, did not give rise to any major reservations, then the problem o f painted décor was found to be highly controversial. The main problem was a search for the answer to the question whether it was justified, or even permissible, to reconstruct decorations o f the interiors devastated by fire when, except for the wall-building substance and the arrangement o f window openings and niches, only a very small percentage o f wall paintings that used to decorate the wall had been preserved. Nothing lite. rally was left from a rich architectonic and sculpturing wood. -carving. Finally, after a lengthy discussion and including amendments approved by the overwhelming majority, the commission presented the Municipal Council with an expertise made on behalf o f seminar participants. The expertise confirms a technical possibility o f reconstruction. Still, in recommends an earlier verification o f the reliability of the documentation. The expertise draws also attention to difficulties involved in eventual reconstruction. The problem o f reconstructing the Golden Hall is of both a cultural and political nature and its solution depends on the decision o f the town o f Augsburg itself. At any rate, it is advised to take on first only partial tasks, the results o f which would be every time assessed by a competent international body and would influence international body and would influence further decisions. It is also recommended to commence with easier and non-conflicting works such as floors, window partitions, doors and portals, tested first on models scaled 1:1. The existing provisional arrangement should make a point o f departure for partial steps. In the case o f a possible modern solution, defined as a rule as problematic, the architecture of Elias Holl should definitely not be changed. Also relics of the preserved wallpaintings, which must be maintained „in situ”, must stay unharmed.

Opis:
The basic outline of the Communication Workers’ Estate, known since 1936 as Boernerowo from the name of its initiator, Ignacy Boerner, Minister of the Post and Telegraph, dates back to 1932-1934, when the residential estate was built in the suburban locality of Babice. The housing estate was completed in stages in accordance with a holistic plan prepared by Adam Jurewicz and Adam Kuncewicz who followed the principles of progressive Polish town planning. Initially, it encompassed typical so-called growing single-family wooden houses; from 1934, they were accompanied by free-standing brick houses. Alltold, prior to 1939, garden plots were filled with 275 houses and some o f the public utility objects foreseen in the plan, including a wooden chapel and a children’s centre. From the viewpoint of town planning the present-day state of the preservation of the Estate can be regarded as satisfactory, and its woodland-garden character has not changed. The same holds true for the carefully designed arrangement of streets, strips composed of greenery, the overwhelming majority of the original divisions into lots, and the lines of free-standing, loose development proposed by the designers. Large fragments of streets filled with original housing have been preserved. In recent years, Boernerowo, similarly to single-family house estates maintained within the boundaries of Warsaw and built during the prewar period by resorting to thrifty construction technologies, has become the site of increasingly intensive investments which carry the threat of losing many valuable elements of town planning and architecture. The presented article is an attempt at a holistic arrangement of our knowledge about the history of the construction of the Boernerowo Estate, a diagnosis of the state of its preservation, and a definition, upon this basis, of the range of conservation protection suitable for the architectural-town planning specificity of the Communication Estate.

Opis:
Hotels are becoming a popular way of revitalising historical objects, particularly prominent in the case of palaces, manor houses and castles, whose peripheral localisation frequently proves to be an obstacle in endowing them with a contemporary function. Hotel services, conceived as a derivative function of residences, appear to be an excellent solution which continues and develops the role which such buildings had been playing for centuries. During the age of the free market economy, increasingly focused on guaranteeing quality, the economisation of production, promotion and the supply of services, hotels situated in historical objects must tackle the competition of well-organised and effective hotel chains. Joint promotion and the retention of loyal clients thanks to efficient organisations of hotels and historical monuments, have proven to be helpful in effective rivalry with the hotel-industry giants. The organisations in question are also satisfying for the clients, since they guarantee a high standard of services. Guests benefiting from hotel networks complain about uniformity, but at the same time express their appreciation for the high standard ensured by precisely that feature. In the case of untypical hotels located in historical monuments, the process of winning over clients ascribes essential importance to membership in an organisation of historical residences offering hotel services, whose authority guarantees the maintenance of the advertised level of services. European associations of hotels in historical objects vary from local to international, as do their offers which share, however, a single trait – the need to assure aesthetic and emotional experiences associated with contact with historical substance. The latter involves acquaintanceship with the given locality, the creation of a unique ambience, and an offer to experience prestige attained by personal contact with values protected for the sake of future generations. Finally, organisations of historical hotels can be divided into national, supranational and para-hotel enterprises, with the latter apparently ascribed particular priority from the viewpoint of the protection of, and care for historical monuments. The article is a fragment of a Ph.D dissertation being written under the supervision of Prof. Dr. hab. Stanisław Liszewski at Łódź University (Department of Geographic Sciences).
