Stanisław Wyspiański - Opis:
- The author describes the history of the mural in the parish church of the Holy Cross, Cracow. The original painting, dating from the late 16th century, was revealed in the course of renovation of the church in 1896. The notable degree of moistness of the wall was responsible for the mural being destroyed past restoration. Under the circumstances Stanisław Wyspiański made a copy of the painting discussed and on its basis a new polichromy was applied. That way of conservation proceeding was criticized, however, at the time. The following part of the article deals with the origin of the ideological substance of the mural. According to the author’s supposition its prototype was a Netherlandian drawing referring to the texts by Ignatius Yoyola and the verses of the Bible. The present mural, dating from the end of the 19th century is a copy without the original layer. Nevertheless, in the auhor’s opinion it is worth being recognized as a historical object, on account of the 16th century substance preserved therein and the value of a restored dating from late 19th century monument.
