    The customers’ expectations towards companies providing transport services continue to grow. Nowadays, besides common tendency to minimize the costs of operation conducted while maintaining the required quality standards, the key role is played by the issue of ensuring the conditions for continuing the implementation of transport processes. The article characterizes the key threats to the orderly functioning of the transport system and an attempt has been made to indicate the possibility of using the assumptions of the business continuity management concept in modern transport systems.

    The objective of this article is to try to determine the levels of implementation and the use of modern technologies in selected areas of internal transport and storage. This is primarily due to the very high dynamics of the environment and the increasing level of customer centricity that forces companies to systematically search for new, innovative and competitive solutions, particularly in logistics chain. Such solutions are particularly desirable in strategic areas of logistics, that is: storage and handling.     The main objective of the text is to try to carry out the analysis with the predominant objective to try and present in realistic way the factors influencing the choice between a service realised only with the use of a road transport and intermodal transport. The author of the analysis put particular stress on the costs of the carriage service, time of its realisation and CO2 emission. The analysis also aimed at showing which of the presented technologies of service providing is more friendly to natural environment. This is due to the fact that the market for intermodal transport and road transport in Poland, knowledge of the mechanisms of price formation and the costs are still low. It is often difficult to determine the unit price of transport modes or mechanisms of shaping them. This results primarily from difficulties with the calculation of the actual cost of transport, terminal operations, management and other issues occurring in road transport and intermodal logistics functions.

    The article refers to the challenges aimed at identifying decisions that translate into optimization in the TFL industry, on the example of selected activities of transport companies. Awareness of high competitiveness should influence the well-thought-out directions of development of business owners and managerial staff in the context of creating the company's distinguishing features. They should be viewed on a global scale in order to increase profit and optimize costs. The article shows a direct connection between optimal patterns of action and the undertaken non-intuitive and innovative activities with the possible development of market niches. The publication draws attention to the multi-threaded and above-standard strategies chosen by selected road transport employers.

    In the paper is presented a conception of „three stages” of risk management in transport. So risk management can be considered at three levels (planes) of each transport system: 1. level of system structure elements; 2. level of processes which realize system purposes; 3. level of system “attitude”. Risk is a “multidimensional product” and relates all negative transport effects (NETs). It is, among the others, about risks: life loss (safety aspect), natural environment degradation, transport congestion arising.

    Implementation of security objectives is conditioned by fast access to reliable and up-to-date information about processes occurring within the Safety Management Systems. The amount of information and the speed of changes taking place in the environment makes it necessary to introduce a system of information management and channels of their flow not only within the organization, but also in communication with third parties. Proper management of information resources increases the efficiency and effectiveness of SMS functioning. The article presents the possibility of a formalized description of the flow of external and internal information in a well-functioning Railway Operator Safety Management System. Analogous maps can be identified for infrastructure managers, defining key elements of its functioning.

    The dynamic changes in the global economy has caused the rapid growth of transport needs. Outsourcing and off-shoring has increased the distance between the particular places where the production process is provided. Therefore, logistics has become more macro-scale than before. Maritime traffic is therefore the main transport mode served a global movements of goods. Such companies like Maersk, NYK or Hanjin are today a global transport players offering a wide scope of service. Proper functioning of maritime transport needs also a good developed system of seaports. Effectiveness and efficiency of global transport is depend on seaports infrastructure, equipment, staff and management. So, seaports has become a critical element of supply chains concept. In the following analysis, the relation between the main requirements of supply chain management (SCM) and contemporary practice of seaports management are investigated. The type of port management systems and its operation model will reflect on the possibility of implementation of SCM. In the last part of presented elaboration main pros and cons of particular solutions of port management are defined and indicated.

    This article presents an integrated approach towards building a simulation model of the transportation network. The proposed method is based on the recommendations of the Blue Book for Sector of Public Transport in cities, agglomerations and regions issued by Jaspers (Joint Assistance to Support Projects in European Regions). It comprises six steps with such elements as econometric modelling, artificial neural networks and mathematical model. It is dedicated to developing simulation models for the purpose of picturing present situation and dependencies dominating in the transportation network, easily reflecting effects of potential modifications and providing forecasts for the future. The described hybrid method was verified in practice by building the simulation model which is presented in the next article in this series entitled: An Integrated Approach towards Building a Simulation Model Supporting the Management of the Passenger Transportation System. Part 2 – Case Study.

    The objective of this publication is to translate the activities included in road transport task into the language of tasks and to ascribe appropriate costs and economic effectiveness indicators to them. Such a representation is new in litera-ture and serves as the base for any further analysis of costs carried in an international road cargo transport company. The suggested indicators refer to both direct and indirect costs which are carried. They also allow to evaluate the work of people involved in the organization and realisation of transport tasks. Additionally, the suggested cumulative indicators allow for the evaluation of transport tasks from the perspective of operational management of the company. The usage of the IT systems proved to be extremely helpful in this respect as they generate all the required infor-mation on the spot.
