effectiveness / efficiency
Opis:
This paper includes a definition of the indicator of the effectiveness of spatial trade on the macro scale. The degree of efficiency of a given sector, for example transportation, is determined by the relation of production and its cost. This relationship can be evaluated by various models of spatial economies. One of the possible way is considered in this study.

Opis:
The article consists of three parts. First part focuses on the development of goods conveyance (along with the consideration of particular transport branches) between 1980 and 2010 in the United States. Second part describes the development of commodity conveyance by means of transport of particular branches in the European Union in the same year, in Japan (1985-2008) and China (1980-2008). Last part is an attempt to indicate the differences in the structure of transport development in the United States and the European Union.

Opis:
The worldwide air freight transport is seen mostly from the angle of long-distance passenger flights. Given that, one often tends to forget the role of this transport branch in the case of commodity transport. Air freight transport is a booming branch with great development potential. This, however, is related to considerable experience and knowledge, on the part of both the carrier and the owner of goods, with regards to technical capacities of a given aircraft, maintenance costs, and rule awareness. The objective of the study is to analyse the global market of air freight transport. In view of the vast scope of the subject, the issues were presented, to a large extent, on the basis of existing airports.

Opis:
This article is about the integration idea of rail and road long-distance transport to increase the efficiency of the transport chain. The article compared two transport models - conventional (using road transport) and intermodal transport (using road and rail transport). The proposed intermodal model uses the Container Transport System for freight transport in relation: consolidation point (company) – container terminal – rail transport – container terminal – deconsolidation point and radial transport system of road transport to ensure door-to-door delivery. The model was examined to optimize cost, time, capacity and environmental factors. Moreover, in the article the main features of both models were identified and compared. Freight rates and the prices given in the article are consistent with the actual rates charged by carriers, but they are not an offer.

Opis:
Although the Australian road freight transport industry has seen three mass limits reviews in the mid 1970s, the mid 1980s and in the late 1990s, (Hassall, 2005), there were two very significant truck configuration changes that happened in the mid 1980s and then again in the early 2000s. The first was the trials of a variant of the Canadian B-train (the B-Double) which was introduced into Australia in the mid 1980s. This ‘Australian’ B-Double could achieve payloads some 30% to 40% higher than the conventional ‘semi trailer’ articulated combination. By 2016 some 18,900 of these vehicles were operational in Australia. The second adoption of new vehicle configurations started in 1999 through the National Road Transport Commission (NRTC), who adopted, and further developed, another Canadian concept, that of “Performance Based Standards” (PBS). This effectively allowed for new, flexible truck designs, as long as the vehicles performed against a set of 17 specific technical engineering performance criteria. This Performance Based Standards approach, since 1998, also allowed even larger configurations to B-Doubles to be used by operators. The benefits of these new configurations have already delivered billions of dollars in kilometre savings to the road freight industry and to its customers, as well as very significant safety benefits to the community.

Opis:
Background: The article provides a discussion on freight transport planning. The existing solutions applied in this sphere have been compared with the environment-related needs. The concept which has been proposed involves a dedicated travel planner that takes some additional non-standard criteria into consideration. At the same time, the authors have highlighted the necessity to expand the algorithms being applied, and to address the comprehensive nature of the problem. However, it is the first and last mile section of supply chains on which the article focuses. The planner described in the paper is being developed as a part of an integrated platform implemented under the international S-mile project. Research methodology: The solutions proposed for transport planning purposes include application of ICT. A review of the available solutions has made it possible to indicate one of the planners currently in use as the foundation upon which a more advanced freight transport planning tool dedicated to the first/last mile section can be built. The planner requires application of several optimisation algorithms, including those which consider route parameters, the selection of fleet vehicles available for the given task, cargo distribution over the vehicle etc. The article defines both primary and secondary criteria that such a planner should take into account, including the environmental ones. What the authors have also highlighted is the possibility to make use of open data sources. The approach they have proposed makes it possible to raise the level of environmental awareness at the first and the last mile management stage, and since multiple transport aspects have been addressed, it also increases planning efficiency. Goals: The purpose of the article has been to discuss an eco-friendly solution which may limit the negative environmental impact of transport. Conclusions: The solution described in the paper may change the manner in which freight transport is managed in cities. Taking environmental criteria into consideration makes it possible to reduce the negative environmental impact of transport. Planning of freight transport requires that far more criteria should be taken into account compared to route planning for the travelling population. A comprehensive fleet management platform featuring a planning module combined with other modules of the S-mileSys system being currently developed is also aimed at integration of large freight companies with the carriers that service first and last miles.

Opis:
This paper presents an empirical approach that allows pre-feasibility assessment of logistics infrastructure for defined locational and fleet constraints. It aims at developing a fast screening method for the assessment of demand of a public Transport and Logistics Center, which is important for properly selecting the Center’s size and minimising the risk of over or under-estimation of capacity needs. The results are useful for policy makers to facilitate the early planning and commercialisation phases of a TLC project. The method develops the appropriate cost functions in order to compare two logistics strategies: one that involves the use of TLC to achieve economies of scale, and another one that assumes direct deliveries from origin to destination to save time and handling costs. The method has been applied as a pilot study in a case of a regional Center in Greece, advocating its applicability and reusability.
