- Nutrition is one of the most important factors influencing animal health status, welfare and productivity. Formulation of dairy cow rations often considers the feed additives. Non-pathogenic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be added to animal diets. Yeast preparations modulate rumen fermentation. Live yeast S. cerevisiae reduces lactate accumulation in rumen fluid. Increased concentrations of volatile fatty acids can contribute to higher milk production. Yeast preparations may improve dry matter intake, but yeast supplementation can increase milk yield even without dry matter intake changes. Cows offered yeast preparations can utilise nutrients more efficiently. Yeasts have immunomodulatory properties and bind mycotoxins contaminating feed ingredients. The aim of this paper was to present the aspects connected with the influence of yeast based feed additives on dairy cows.
