Opis:
One of the key issues related to the welfare and safety of livestock production, i.e., broadly understood biosecurity in a farm, is the application of disinfectants that are safe for animals and effective with a broad spectrum of biocidal activity. On the market many commercial products are available but they appear final formulation, what may complicate the correct selection of effective agents for farm disinfection as well as the farm surroundings. During the last few years, interest in nanoparticles has been observed in many areas of human and veterinary medicine. Meanwhile, nanoparticles may also be considered as alternative to antibiotics in farm animals, as prevention of resistant bacterial strains development. Many of the recent results in nanoparticles research they can be used in parallel as an active compound in products with broad biocidal activity. Considering speculations regarding the potential harmful effects of accumulation of some elements used as active nanoparticles, the presented paper aims to dispel them by presenting a multifactorial and detailed scientific research. Regarding all the advantages of nanoparticles in human and veterinary medicine, this technology seems to be the future in the field of modern therapies and biosecurity. Currently, the most in-depth experience in application of the silver nanoparticles has a Polish company - Smart Nanotechnologies producing Silveco+ formulation.

Opis:
This article aims at the presentation of most prominent infectious agents that emerged just few months age. Coronaviruses (CoVs) constitute a large group of ssRNA viruses that cause acute and chronic diseases in animals and humans. They show a high degree of genetic variability resulting in the existence of four major genera (alfa-, beta-, gamma– and deltacoronaviruses), that further diverge into multiple subgenera and genetic lineages. Different types of CoVs occur naturally in cattle, horses, pigs, cats, dogs, rodents and many species of birds. Bats however, are considered as the natural reservoir and primary source of novel coronaviruses with zoonotic potential, including MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2. There is evidence that intermediate hosts (e.g. civets, dromedary camels, pangolins), can play a key role in the transmission of coronaviruses from bats to humans. Currently, the major concern is associated with SARS-CoV-2, a causative agent of COVID-19 – a human disease that originated in China in late 2019 and spread globally in the early 2020. It has been shown recently, that SARS-CoV-2 is capable of infecting some species of animals, including cats, tigers, ferrets and minks. These rare cases have most likely been caused by human-to-animal transmission and further extensive research are required to elucidate the role of animals in the epidemiology of COVID-19.

Opis:
African swine fever (ASF), remains serious epidemiologic and economic concern in pig industry in Europe and Asia. The true rates of ASF spread in the individual countries, affected by this disease, are different from the theoretical scenarios. The most unpredictable factor, which is also crucial in the new episodes of ASF in wild boar observed in the areas thus far free from this disease, is human activity. These areas could be located several to even hundred kilometers from the current region of ASF occurrence in wild boar. An example may be represented by the occurrence of ASF cases in wild boar around Warsaw area in 2017, as well as in western Poland in autumn 2019. Therefore ASF may spread in wild boar population not only in a low, “natural” way, at a rate of 1–2 km per month, but also by human-mediated transfer of the virus at a rate of dozens or hundreds of kilometers. The administrative measures introduced by the Chief Veterinary Officer and the representatives of Veterinary Inspection in Poland, aimed at limiting further ASF expansion in wild boar to northern, western and southern regions. Further scenario for ASF spreading in wild boar and pig population will depend on joint, consistent and effective actions and collaboration between the Veterinary Inspection, hunters and pig producers in Poland.
