Opis:
First source mention about presence in Opatów four Jewish families comes from 1538 year. Right of settling in this private city the Jewish population got in privilege the Konstantyn Ostrogski from 1545 year. Opatów in second half XVI century was Jews the largest concentration in whole province sandomierskie. Jewish commune suffered particularly during "Swedish deluge” (1655-1660) as well as northern war (1700-1721). To frequent disputes among Polish population and Jewish it came during debating in Opatów of regional council of province sandomierskie. The financial dependence of Jewish commune from owners of city brought to limitation their rights. This is the stately thing of attention also, that Jews in Opatów belonged to common with Catholic craftsmen of guild. In XVIII century two synagogues functioned in Opatów, one stone build from XVI century, second wooden from beginnings XVIII century. It seems, that painting of life of this population in Opatów can be the perfect example of relations Catholic-Jewish in different cities of Rzeczypospolita XVI-XVIII century.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 1. The paper is a hidden polemic with the texts that have recently been published (not quoted by their names or indicated in the footnotes). These texts have brought forth a diagnosis that there is a delay in terms of methodology with regard to the studies on Old-Polish literature and have postulated their application to the studies on ancient literature. The author formulates her belief that traditional philology is indispensable in the studies on Old-Polish literature with an awareness that there should be a free choice in selecting the method of its interpretation. The text emerges from a protest against the rhetoric of methodological directives formulated under the influence of fashion, ideology, or fatigue with the object of research and from radical distrust to methodological directives as such, and the majority of directives in general.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne 61 (2013), issue 2. The article presents Polish reactions to the famous Jesuit mission in England of 1580, and thus also the beginnings of the formation of the worship of St Edmund Campion in Poland. They are connected with the publication in Kraków (1583) of a translation of Robert Persons’ account entitled De persecutione Anglicana, but also with the position that the history of Campion’s mission took in the work of Piotr Skarga SJ. The Polish writer, showing a lively interest in what was going on with English Catholics and inspiring political interventions in support of Jesuits imprisoned in England (including his subordinate, the Vilnius professor James Bosgrave), in subsequent editions of his very popular hagiographic collection Żywoty świętych [The Lives of Saints] presented Przydatek […] o świętych męczennikach [A Supplement […] on Saint Martyrs] which was modified several times, and in it a paragraph titled O męczennikach w Anglijej [On Martyrs in England]. Its most basic part consisted of—starting with the 1585 edition—the story of St Edmund Campion, St Ralph Sherwin and Alexander Briant’s mission and martyrdom, which was a free adaptation of the narration contained in Concertatio Ecclesiae Catholicae in Anglia by John Fenn and John Gibson (1583). Skarga’s interest in the figure of Campion was also reflected in the Polish translation of Rationes decem (1583) that he made at the request of King Stephen Báthory. It may be said that Rationes decem (also published in Latin in 1605) became one of the fundamental apologetic texts in Poland of the early-modern age, and St Edmund Campion, in a sense, became the patron of controversial theology, which would find its confirmation in the 18th century adaptation of Nicholas Sanders and Edward Rishton’s work De origine ac progressu schismatis Anglicani (1748) written by Jan Poszakowski.

Opis:
The article concerns the traces of the Old Testament apocrypha IV Ezra in the Polish literature of the nineteenth century. It shows how the prose (novel Mirtala of Eliza Orzeszkowa) and Polish poetry (Ezra’s prayer of Maria Konopnicka and Ezra and Uriel of Stefan Witwicki) exploit issues evoked by the Biblical apocrypha and portray the figure of its author. The analyzed texts demonstrate that the Polish writers knew the Old Testament apocrypha and therefore it explains its presence in the Polish literary culture of the nineteenth century. An interesting issue is the question of how Polish culture absorbed the apocryphal book. Numerous textual and archival traces lead to French and German works, but an indication of specific sources is still a research task for biblical scholars and historians of literature.
