Opis:
Based on the analysis of an extensive spectrum of literary works — which undoubtedly are documents of human life of the time — one can notice that friendship interests people across various ages and cultures. The didactic books of the Old Testament, representing the culture of ancient Israel, are among these testimonies. Especially the Book of Sirach contains a lot of thoughts on friendship. An important message of the biblical teaching regarding friendship is that the proper friendly relationship can exist only between people who have achieved God’s wisdom by fearing and loving God and who live according to the Law. Hence, the friendship in the horizontal dimension in the society of Israel had a specific reference to God. This kind of friendship is an object of God’s pleasure: “There are three things my soul delights in, and which are delightful to God and to all people: concord between brothers, friendship between neighbours, and a wife and husband who live happily together” (Sir 25:1). As Sirach the Sage points out, the friendship is delightful to people who repeatedly value friendship more than the blood ties; “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Prov 18:24), wrote the author of the Book of Proverbs.

Opis:
In Roman Brandstaetter's drama The Day of Wrath motifs may be found that are taken from the Books of the Prophets and the Wisdom Books of the Old Testament. They allow looking at the title day of wrath as the time, in which God's action is manifested. Like in the message by the prophet Zephaniah, in the drama destruction and salvation may be a revelation of God as the Lord of history and the Savior. Recollecting the words of prophets, psalms, the Gospel and the Apocalypse in the drama allows looking at the 20th century events as a subsequent realization of God's promises. The events in the drama are a kind of repetition and continuation of biblical scenes. Passion and salvation given by God during the banishment become present. God's action is confronted with the man's faith that has been weakened. The protagonists of the drama experience “the time of wrath, the time of mercy”, in which their conversion may at last happen. Owing to the words of the Holy Scriptures intertwined in the text of the drama the image of God's awesomeness and of the surrounding evil do not become a source of despair for the protagonists, but allow them to accept God's incomprehensible will.

Opis:
The author of the article describes two basic conceptions of the biblical world of the dead. The first of them, emphasized in traditional articles, perceives Szeol as a gloomy, dark and passive world. On the other hand, the second one gives the dead more activity and knowledge. This latter conception is derived from old Syro-Cananite beliefs. The author thinks that it was gradually replaced by the passive image of the other world accepted in the orthodox Yahwistic circles. It only survived in folk beliefs. However, after the catastrophes of the years 722 and 586 and in the face of the crisis of the traditional teaching about mundane retribution in the Hellenistic times, the beliefs − pushed to the margin − were used in the formation of the new conception of resurrection. Hence the sources of resurrection may be looked for in the old pagan beliefs of Syro-Canaan, whereas Yahwisn's consistent, rigid images of the world of the dead disappeared along with the Sadducees.
