    The paper seeks to give an ontological account of idea as mental content in the philosophy of John Locke. The foundation on which to place and polarise philosophical standpoints with regard to this issue is the 17th-century controversy between J. Locke and N. Malebranche with respect to the genesis of human knowledge. Showing the foundation of this controversy, as expressed in the polemic work of Locke entitled An Examination of P. Malebranche’s Opinion of Seeing All Things in God, I shall outline two possible approaches to our mental contents, namely the psychologistic and anti-psychologistic ones. In this perspective Locke is a representative of the first standpoint, whereas Malebranche of the second. In the psychologistic approach, the content of our conscious acts (or according to 17th-century Cartesian philosophy ideas) is exclusively an internal element of this consciousness. On the contrary – in the case of the anti-psychologistic characteristation, the content of our consciousness is described as ontologically antonomous, i.e. as independent from thr knowing subject. Following the analyses of An Examination, I obtain additional arguments on behalf of the psychologistic interpretation of Locke’s conception of idea (expressed, among others, by J. Yolton and M. Ayers), contrary to the anti-psychologistic approaches (claimed by, among others, T. Reid, R. McRae, and N. Jolley).

    Opis:
    This paper shows some key aspects and main theses of the so-called “privative” theory of art founded on philosophical realism. For the sake of contrast, idealism is discussed and its theories of art: “eidetic” (rationalism) and “manic”-expressive (irrationalism). The presentation of the two traditions is crowned with a thesis according to which the realistic theory of art is universal and cognitively neutral. The tradition of idealism, for that matter, does not explain art, but projects its vision and is entangled in a debate between so-called essentialism and anti-essentialism, the debate that cannot be solved.

    In the article the evolution of Malebranche's views on the existence of the material world has been presented. In the early period of his work he mainly dealt with epistemological and methodological issues. He did not attach much importance to the problem of the existence of the material world. In that period he seemed to completely accept the Cartesian proof of the existence of bodies. In the later period of his work, when he puts the issue in the centre of his reflection, first he subjects the Cartesian proof to criticism and then he justifies the thesis that a rational proof of the existence of the material world is not possible. In the article special attention was paid to the close relation between Malebranche's theory of seeing in God and occasionalism on the one hand and criticism of the Cartesian proof and the method of justifying the thesis about impossibility of giving a rational proof of the existence of the material world. Although Malebranche announces the standpoint that will be later defended by G. Berkeley, but he does not accept it. He brought the certainty about the existence of the material world from the philosophical plane to the religious one: the Holy Writ teaches that God created the world.

    Nie zrozumiemy do końca sytuacji wychowania dziś, jego dróg i bezdroży, jeśli nie odwołamy się do filozofii, pamiętając o jej związkach z pedagogiką, wpisanych na trwałe w horyzonty myśli europejskiej. Od początku filozoficznego myślenia widoczne są dwie przeciwstawne tradycje filozoficzne: realizm i idealizm. Mają one odmienną ontologię, epistemologię, antropologię i aksjologię, które stanowią założenia (fundament) konkretnej pedagogiki, kierunku pedagogicznego czy też koncepcji wychowania. W niniejszym artykule przyglądamy się realizmowi i idealizmowi w kontekście ich wpływu na wychowanie, zaznaczając jednocześnie wynikające z tego konsekwencje. Poczyniona w artykule analiza pozwala stwierdzić, że prawdziwa droga wychowania związana jest z realizmem, zaś idealizm sprowadza wychowanie, jak i samą pedagogikę, na bezdroża.
    We do not understand fully the situation of upbringing, its roads and roadless tracts, unless we invoke to the philosophy, remembering about its relations with pedagogy placed permanently in the horizons of the European thoughts. Since the beginning of philosophical thinking, there are noticeable two opposing philosophical traditions: realism and idealism. They have different ontology, epistemology, anthropology and axiology which determine the principles (the basis) of the specific pedagogy, the trend of pedagogy or the concept of upbringing. In the following article, we examine realism and idealism in the context of their influence on upbringing, indicating at the same time the consequences arising from it. The analysis, which has been conducted in the article, let us state that the true way of upbringing is connected with realism whereas idealism leads upbringing, as well as the pedagogy itself, astray.

    The aim of the article is to consider the problem of metaphysical realism that is defined as the thesis that there are objects that are independent of human consciousness. The problem was not solved by I. Kant, since he assumed, without a justification, that there are objects (“things in themselves”) that are the causes of human mental states. The author interprets the problem of metaphysical realism in the context of the so-called principle of immanence (“principle of consciousness”), according to which every entity (object) may be treated exclusively as a correlate of consciousness. The principle of immanence is the cause why even causal relations have to be treated as only certain data for the consciousness, and hence they may not be referred to by asserting that there is a factor that is the cause of states of human consciousness. Contemporary anti-realism, as the so-called conceptual realism, does not consider the problem of metaphysical realism in the context of the principle of immanence, and hence it is not a part of the traditional dispute on the existence of the (external) world. The author sees the solution to the problem of metaphysical realism in combining two arguments: in the reference to the ontological proof, which – via God’s veracity – is to “lead outside” the immanence of consciousness, and in the reference to the concept of participation in such a way that the human mind participates in God and it is Him that is the real entity (ens realissimum) that is referred to by the dispute about the existence of the world and the problem of metaphysical realism.

    Opis:
    Fast and intensive development of natural science (especially quantitative physics) and computer science make us think about the philosophy of nature. In this article we would like to show that a new subject of the philosophy of nature is the virtual world. The first step was to analyse some words like the following: virtuality, potentiality, reality. In this context we propose a definition of the virtual world as a real view created or reconstructed by intellectual or technical simulation. The next step was analyzed the objects and levels of virtual world. We emphasise the technical-communicational level and computer technology associated with it (the Internet, chat, blog, virtual shops); the second level is the biological level which is connected with the objects produced by the brain (thinking, imagination, research projects); the third level is the theoretical level with the virtual elements. On the ground of this classification we have shown that the virtual world and the objects are not homogeneous. The last part of this paper presents the beginning of the virtual world (creation or reconstruction in the intellectual and technical simulation). Our analyses are connected with Plato and his idealism, Aristotle and his realism, and Popper’s/Penrose’s proposition.

    Nie jest możliwe „uprawianie” i rozumienie pedagogiki oraz myśli pedagogicznej bez ich odniesień do metapedagogicznych założeń, szczególnie w obszarze filozofii rozumianej jako najbardziej pierwotna refleksja nad rzeczywistością, tzn. tym, co jest. Od początku filozoficznego myślenia widoczne są dwie przeciwstawne tradycje filozoficzne: realizm i idealizm. Mają one odmienną ontologię, epistemologię, antropologię i aksjologię, które stanowią założenia (fundament) konkretnej pedagogiki oraz myśli i działania pedagogicznego. Prezentowany artykuł w sposób szkicowy ukazuje realistyczne założenia integralnej pedagogiki przedszkolnej bł. Edmunda Bojanowskiego, dzięki którym jest ona adekwatna (zgodna z rzeczywistością) i otwarta na wciąż zmieniające się czasy i wyzwania, przy równoczesnej zdolności zachowania swojej tożsamości.
    It is not possible “going in for” and understanding pedagogy and the pedagogical thought without their references to the meta-pedagogical assumptions, especially in the field of philosophy understood as the most primordial reflection on the reality, i.e. what is. Since the beginning of the philosophical thought, the two opposing philosophical traditions have been seen: realism and idealism. They have different ontology, epistemology, anthropology and axiology, which determine the assumptions (basis) of the specific pedagogy as well as thought and pedagogical action. The presented article shows in the sketchy way, the realistic assumptions of the integral nursery pedagogy of the blessed Edmund Bojanowski, thanks to them it is adequate (corresponding with the facts) and open to still changing times and challenges, at the same time with the ability of preserving its identity.
