Opis:
The article is concerned with the interesting problem connected with the social relations in Poland in the years 1918-1939, and that is the question of the ideological image of the Polish intelligentsia of that epoch. Polish teachers of that time may be considered the nation's intellectual elite. The teachers' main trade union, the Polish Teachers' Association, came into various conflicts with the Church hierarchy. This resulted to a large degree from the positivist (scientistic) formation of the then elite. Scientism, defined as having a peculiar “faith in the science”, in the opinion of many people did not agree with the “fideist” attitude. The peak of that conflict fell on 1937, when the Board of Directors of the Association was suspended by the state authorities as it was suspected of Communist influences. However, the research conducted by the author shows that the greater part of the PTA activists were not willing to accept the Communist ideology; on the contrary, they assumed a hostile attitude towards it. On the other hand, the anticlerical position they took in many cases was connected with leftist social views and with the already mentioned positivist intellectual formation. Another important thesis the author of the article tries to prove is the fact of the intelligentsia's gradual departure from the antireligious, scientistic attitude (especially in the 1930's), and ever more frequent submission to the Church's pastoral influences.

Opis:
In the epoch of Polish positivism liberalism is a very complicated and antynomical phenomenon. Studies of positivistic liberalism have not described yet all the aspects of the issue and, on the other hand, have formed a few stereotypes. The article characterizes the liberal attitude taken by two leading representatives of positivism in Poland: Aleksander Świętochowski and Bolesław Prus. Their different journalist strategies were inspired by the same work written by John Stuart Mill, On Liberty. Under the influence of Mill's thought Prus created a model of ethical liberalism. Świętochowski was an aristocratic liberal. The description of two models of liberalism formed by the two Polish positivists is a continuation of the interpretations of Mill's social philosophy by Alan S. Kahan (aristocratic liberalism) and Morice Cowling.

The paper discusses naturalistic axiology of L. Laudan (normative naturalism) and social epistemology of H. Longino (contextual empiricism). Both standpoints are subjected to criticism. G.Doppelt, A.Rosenberg, and H.Siegel argue that Laudan's axiology lacks any naturalistic foundation. K.Freedman shows that this objection is based on a misunderstanding of Laudan's use of the term “naturalism”. He distinguishes two senses of this term running throughout Laudan's work. Once those senses are made explicit the above objection dissappears. Next, the attention is drawn to the virtues of Longino's epistemology as a viable alternative both to positivism and holism. The paper presents objections raised by Ph. Kitcher (the charge of relativism), F.Schmitt (the charge of incoherence) and M.Solomon (the charge of individualism) against Longino's views and arguments defending her position developed by K. B. Wray. The paper claims that the discussions presented can be best understood within the framework of (epistemic) axiology initiated in the fifties of the XXth century – among others – by R. Rudner, C.W.Churchman, I.Levi.

Opis:
An attempt at reconstruction of the cultural model of Polish positivism as a component of the paradigm of modernity is the subject of the study. It tries to describe the constitutive determinants of the positivist world view in which „the philosophical discourse of modernity” was evidently reflected. Polish positivism turned out to be an explication of fundamental, emancipation  ideas of modernity, mainly the ideas of civilization progress that determined the positivists' historiosophic thinking. The spirit of modernity was manifested in Polish positivism not only on the plane of „great narratives” legitimizing intellectual discourses of that time, but it also influenced the status of the conception of subjectivity that was obligatory in that epoch, a conception that was basically founded on the modern episteme.

Opis:
The author of the article emphasizes that if a distinction between legal positivism and natural law is to be made, the definition of law must be such that it could be employed for both concepts of law. Law, in contrast to moral norms, can be defined as a social norm which it is possible to impose under compulsion. The notion ‘compulsion’, however, should be construed in a way that would permit it to be used in both the positivist theory of law and that based on natural law. Natural law is not an array of ultimate legal norms, but it manifests itself in practical reasoning which recognizes rules that substantiate existential goals in a given society with regard to all of its economic and social conditions. Natural law grows as culture and social bonds develop, especially social awareness of the members, yet it is not equal to these social factors. It provides an opportunity for a critical evaluation of the existing economic relations as well as social relations in general. In terms of natural law, this means that practical reason is tuned to the content which is ultimately related to the existential goals of man. The timeless character of natural law does not hinge upon an ultimate formulation of fundamental legal norms but rather on the dynamic power of practical reason so that it should be possible to formulate legal norms anew which would permit a realization of existential goals of man, using both external and internal (i.e. experience of values) types of experience.

Opis:
The article shows why the Big Bang should not be identified with the moment when God created the Universe. The methodological objections arise from the accepted conception of autonomy of different disciplines (science, philosophy and theology), and from the principle of methodological and epistemological uniformity which is derived from that conception. On the subject plane these objections arise from the analysis of cosmological and theological knowledge. Cosmology does not give any ground for asserting that the Big Bang is an absolute temporal beginning of the Universe. Theology provides no argument for the creation in some specific time. On the contrary, its representatives warn against identifying the act of creation with the Big Bang.

Polish historiography at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries
Opis:
Władysław Smoleński was one of the leading representatives of the Warsaw historical school. When one talks about the positivist Warsaw school, he usually means its affiliation with the current of Warsaw positivism, and not its relation to the philosophy of positivism, as Polish positivism was a trend with a much more ideological, and not philosophical basis. Still, academics tried to practically implement the postulates of the positivist methodology. For the intelligentsia of that time a critical attitude towards the Catholic Church was typical. The Church's significance in the history of Poland as well as the role of religion in the reality of those times were criticized. Writing his works on the Enlightenment he became part of the criticism directed towards the Catholic world view, but despite the clear anticlericalism, under the influence of his attitude towards Russia he was able to defend the Church. His brochure, in which he drew the reader's attention to the tragic fate of the Uniates, is a proof of this. The category of sublimity is useful in interpreting the historiography of that period, as it allows indicating the constant tension between the views of the past declared by the historians on the one hand, and what is hidden in various layers of their narrative on the other.
