Opis:
The sermons addressed to the deputies during Church festivities and celebrations were part of the customary functioning of the Crown Tribunal. These texts disclose a lot of information that are of paramount value for an art historian. This particularly pertains to 18th-century texts. As borne out by the sermons under analysis, two items of equipment in the Tribunal courtrooms communicated a specific symbolic and legal message: these were the Tribunal cross and the portrait of St. Thomas, the Apostle. The sermons frequently compare the Christ’s ultimate judgments to the rulings of the Polish court. The message behind the symbol of the Tribunal cross was even more intense if it was part of a Marshall’s or a President’s court-of-arms. This was the case in 1723, when Michał Potocki of Pilawa was the Marshall. The most intriguing fusion of events depicted in the New Testament and the Old Polish reality is to be found in a sermon by Wojciech Zabielski, a Jesuit, where he used the figures taking part in the Way of the Cross as models to depict acts and attitudes of his contemporaries. The sermons present St Thomas as a witness to Christ’s resurrection who needed to prove the truth of the redemptive miracle by means of his senses. He symbolized the scrutiny and meticulousness in search of truth and decent judgement. He was set as an example for the judges, who should be ready to lay down their lives for truth and justice.

Opis:
Emotions in visual arts can be subject to an analysis on the level of the act of creation, the work itself, categories of technique and reception, as well as on the degree of division into form and content. Studies show a dichotomy between an intellectual (cognitive) sphere and an emotional (aesthetic) sphere, pointing to the role of recipients’ competence, allowing them to properly read the cultural and artistic code behind emotions presented in visual works. The article is a theoretical review of methods, trends and tools for researching emotions in audiovisual arts. It presents ways of studying emotions in visual arts: film/video, photograph/graphics, all available through the media. They should be discussed on three levels: emotional objectives of the sender, emotions inherent in the artistic work, and emotional reception. Works of visual arts combine virtual and actual realities, hence the way a visual work is created is important. Therefore, the article also presents tools for the study of emotions in audiovisual art on three levels: a) in relation to means of expression, b) aesthetic, and c) presenting content. The summary clearly shows the transdisciplinary nature and methodological syncretism of research on emotions in audiovisual art.
W podsumowaniu wyraźnie widać transdyscyplinarny charakter i metodologiczny synkretyzm badań nad emocjami w sztuce audiowizualnej.

Opis:
This paper outlines the history of the theatrical curtain that reaches back to ancient times. It also attempts to define its function and formulate a definition of this genre of art. In the Roman theatre there were two kinds of curtains: one that separated a part (Lat. siparium) or the whole of the stage from the audience (the so-called auleum). The historical evolution of the basic function of the curtain tended to enrich and elevate its meaning. The curtain should be regarded as an integral element of the theatrical interior, an individualised element and relatively autonomic. It was ornamented with woven, embroidered or painted representations. It also played a symbolic role, i.e. “the border of two worlds”: reality (on the part of the viewer) and illusive fiction (on the part of the theatrical action). The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw some changes in the way to understand the “theatrical character”. As a result of them, the role of the curtain also changed. It became a part of the conception of stage design for a concrete performance. Eventually, the avant-garde of the twentieth century postulate to make the theatre “come closer to life”, therefore it questioned the division of the two “worlds” in general, and eliminated the curtain.

Stoic theory of the work of art

Opis:
The article’s premise is a Stoic-based idea of the work of art, featured in the Eikones of Philostratus the Elder. The pair of authors examines the issue of whether, and to what degree, Strabo (himself also an adherent to Stoical philosophy) shares similar views on the work of art, or whether he is partial to the view prevalent in ancient Greece, which consisted in a kind of naïve awe at the execution of ideal likeness (as exemplified, for instance, by the approach of the heroines of Herondas’ mimiambus IV). A thorough analysis of all descriptions of works of art contained in Strabo’s work leads to the conclusion that Strabo’s was not impressed by “barbarians’ art”. In fact, he begins to pay any attention to works of art as late as in Book 8, describing Greece’s sundry lands. Strabo’s views on the work of art fall into the following categories: 1. a mere note of the object combined with a description of its single feature, usually its size; 2. a thoroughgoing description of works of illustrative character (an antique Biblia Pauperum); and 3. a description of peregrinations of works of art after the latter were seized by the Romans. The last category appears to be of particular interest to Strabo, perhaps due to his view that the Greeks were culturally superior to all Romans (see Daniela Dueck, Strabo of Amasia, London and New York, 2000). In conclusion, it appears that Strabo was a dilettante in his reception of the works of art. No element of his views can be construed to prefigure the later Stoic theory of Philostratus the Elder. In Strabo’s work, the works of art serve to adorn the world and to vivify his often very dry geographical descriptions; their existence was made merely to exemplify the superiority of the Greek spirit over the remaining world.

Opis:
The distinction between philosophy of the object and of the subject is deeply rooted in our culture. Many consequences, including cultural ones, follow from it. Among them is also a change regarding the ways of how the works of art are made and received and also regarding the criterion of art. One instance of this phenomenon is the so called ‘performative turn’. The distinction between theatre of the object and of the subject (which parallels the philosophical distinction) propounded by the main claim of this paper is intended to facilitate understanding of the essence of the change which accompanied the development of the art of performance. The art of the object is represented, to my mind, by the theater; the art of the subject – by the artistic performance. The criterion, in a manner similar to the case of philosophy, is the conviction (or belief) of the creators (as well as of the audience) of the primacy of the subject over the object, of human ability to create an autonomous reality, of human decisiveness regarding the fact of its existence. The conclusion of the presented investigations concerns the character of theatre: the theatre is in its essence performative, however not in the sense attributed to it by contemporary representatives of performance studies. Rather it is so in the sense of how the very nature of reality determines the relation between the subject and the object, human being and the world.

Opis:
In Norwid's works continuation is seen of the Romantic predilection for details, for concrete facts, but the poet moves them from the space of the outer world to the dimension of man's inner reality. The first generation Romantics approach history, for example, through a detail of the landscape. For Norwid history is a context for revealing the inner man (Kleopatra i Cezar). It also happens that history, like in Promethidion, appears in its entanglement in relations with art, beauty and work. In such a configuration the key character of conscience is revealed as a category in a special way connected with the flow of time, with history.

Opis:
The article is concerned with the edition of Cyprian Norwid's Promethidion prepared by Stefan Sawicki. The recognized theoretician, historian and interpreter of literature appears here both as the author of a comprehensive monograph of Promethidion and as an experienced editor embracing the central categories of the poet's viewpoint and artistry, and, on the other hand, with a linguistic precision analyzing particular expressions and tropes. His discerning analysis, careful textological edition of the text and comprehensive interpretation of the poem serve each other. The edition, albeit designed for a broad group of readers, meets the requirements of a critical edition, gives a lot of precisely justified amendments, the necessary explanations, and a list of variants of the text. In the sphere of meanings and structures the poem glitters with variety and shows many aspects of the problems. “Concepts-keys” that are central to the poem are the concept of art (“with no limits”) whose definition is in many ways completed by the concepts of beauty, love, work, good and truth, “constantly approached as if from the side of the conscience”. They are made manifest in utterances by many subjects that have differentiated styles and genres, which is done by means of peculiar techniques (amplifications, approximations, speaking by negation assuming the form of a dialogue, the “counterpoint” technique, evoking the value “by negating anti-values”). However, the whole forms a cohesive “Norwidian collage”, and the image of a “superior speaking subject” appearing as an “image of a prophet of the contemporary Church” has a clear author's stamp. Hence, the message of the poem is perceived “as the voice of a poet: a real one, convinced that what he wants to convey to the society is just”
