The 2nd Polish Plenary Synod was held in the years of 1991-1999. Its first document focused on the new evangelisation which became the programme of the pastoral activity of the Church in Poland for the third millennium. The Synod pointed to the need of preaching – with new zeal, modern means and methods – the good News about Jesus Christ to all people. The Synod's resolutions point to ecclesial awareness among the faithful, i.e. responsibility for the Church in the universal, diocesan, and parochial dimensions. The new evangelisation presupposes that people take a reliable stance to their calling to holiness through the sacramental life of the faithful and their inclusion in the communal religious practices. The document of the 2nd Polish Plenary Synod draws on the material from the sources of the Scriptures, Vatican Council II, the Magisterium of the Church, especially the teaching of John Paul II. The Christians' task is to adjust them to the current socio-cultural circumstances, embracing all the domains of human life with the evangelical truth. The paper lists all the synod's tasks and priorities of the new evangelisation, those that include the collaboration between the family, the state and the Church in the formation of the new generatoin.

The proceedings of Tridentine Council (1545-1563) bore fruit in the form of a dynamic development of the reformatory activity of the Catholic Church. At the provincial synods of the Gniezno province a need was born to work out a new collection of church law on the basis of the Tridentine reformatory legislature. This work of codification was undertaken by the Bishop of Włocławek Stanisław Karnkowski in 1579. This paper discusses in turn the author of the collection, the causes for the collection, the sources of codification, the approval of the Holy See, the editorial method used in the collection and the legal value of the bills contained in it. The paper closes with a statement that the collection of 1579 was private, although it gained popularity in pastoral care, and even served as a point of reference for the new, official codification of Polish church law.

The article entitled Law action for the right of patronage of the Lvov Cathedral in the years 1761-1765 presents the situation of the particular Church after the Council of Trent (1745-1763), whose aim it was, through its own resolutions, to revive religious life in particular local Churches. A reform of the Lvov archdiocese of the Latin rite in the spirit of the Trent resolutions was zealously undertaken by an outstanding − for those times − archbishop and metropolitan, Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski (1760-1780). He faced lack of understanding, which resulted in instituting an action against him in the Council Congregation and then in the Apostolic Signature. The present article shows the history of the action resulting from breach of the law of patronage in the Lvov Cathedral. It consists of an introduction showing the person of the steward of the archdiocese and defines the institution of patronage, describing the archbishop's work on the reform, the patrons' response and the beginning of the action that was settled out of court. In the next part there is a description of resumption of the action, the patrons' reasons, the witnesses' testimonies, and the collected documents; and it ends with the conclusion containing the decision about the dispute. The municipal authorities acted as the prosecutor, as they had the right of patronage. The action lasted four years and it concluded with acquittal of the Latin Archbishop who received a special letter from Pope Clement XIII (1758-1769) at the beginning of 1765. In the acquitting decree the Pope admitted that the Archbishop was right, and in another letter he wrote: Vade et que in corde habes fac, Dominus enim tecum est.

The Tridentine reform as regards the storing and cult of the Eucharist has been properly dealt with in the councillor legislation of the Lvov archdiocese of the Latin rite. The legal regulations as regards sacramentology at the council of Archbishop Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski touched upon the most essential issues regarding the performance and cult of the Holy Sacrament. The lawgiver demonstrated a great feeling for the situation in drawing attention to the then pastoral needs. Moreover, the resolutions concerning the Eucharist were supposed to make the clergy and the lay people more aware of how to take advantage of that sacrament in a more fruitful manner. It was the lawgiver's intention to make the Eucharist the centre of the religious life through the presence of Jesus Christi in the Eucharist in the Church. A mature Christian faith should be derived from the worship to the Holy Sacrament, expressed by a good preparation of the priests to perform it. and the faithful lay people to often receive the Holy Communion. Other religious practices regarding the worship to the Holy Eucharist arc the following: festive Eucharistic processions and bringing the Holy Communion to the sick. The Council pointed also to the most suitable and careful manner of storing the Eucharist in churches. Analyzing the councillor legislation of Archbishop Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski of 1765, as regards this section of sacramentology, one should say that it was inspired by the resolutions of the Tridentinc Council. It was based on the teaching of the popes, especially Pope Benedict XIV, and included the particular law of the earlier council of the Lvov archdiocese.

The second Latin metropolis in Poland, in terms of chronology, fulfilled in its territory a glorious role, despite the fact that it was exposed to a series of various difficulties and denominational struggles. The trend of the Tridentine regeneration in the Lvov archdiocese was initiated by the provincial council of Archbishop Piotr Tarto on November 8. 1564. Later archdiocesan councils, which generally very rarely took place, would go back to those decisions. The Council of Archbishop Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski look place in Lvov in 1765 and drew on to the Tridentine reform. The proceedings of that Council lasted three days and each of them constituted a separate conciliar session, each of which started with a Holy Mass. The opening of each session was foreworded by conciliar address. Only at the end of the council did the archbishop himself delivered two addresses: one for the clergy, and the other for the laity in which he exhorted people to abide by all the decisions of the council. The remaining addresses stressed the joy of calling up the council, the merits of the archbishop, and expressed hope to improve pastoral work and entreated people to abide by the conciliar resolutions in everyday of their parishes. The proceedings of the first session of the council basically embraced two questions, the Catholic Creed and reading out the pastoral letter of Archbishop and Metropolitan Bishop Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski of May 15. 1761. The letter treated about sacerdotal discipline, proclaiming the Word of God. religious life, unification of the liturgical rules on the dispensation of the Holy Sacraments, private chapels and protection of the properties of the Church. The second session regulated the administrative matters in the archdiocese, such as separation of the decanate’s and parochial networks, erection of new archdeacon’s residence, establishing parochial schools, and norms about lasts and Eastern Communion. The thiiu session dealt with the appointment of diocesan judges, councillor examiners, reform of seminaries, and charitable issues. The councillor statutes of Archbishop Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski of 1765 made an important stage in carrying out the Tridentine reform in the Lvov archdiocese. At the same time they concluded the Polish councillor legislation before the partitions of Poland.

The article presents a review of diocesan and provincial synods in the Gniezno Archdiocese in the 14th and 15th centuries. The article has been divided into two parts. In Part I the 14th century, and in Part II the 15th century synods are presented. Both parts mention all the 14th and 15th century synods. To make the picture of the period complete also two codifications of the Polish Church law are included. In the conclusion it is stated that the history of synods shows evolution of the Church law, and the codifications prove that the existing Church law institutions have a lasting character and are a lasting carrier of the Church's history.

The paper seeks to show the collection of Primate Jan Wężyk of 1628 against the background of the codification of the Polish church law. The author divided his study into two parts. In the first one he discussed eight collections of particular law in Poland. In the second one he showed the work Primate Jan Wężyk against the Polish compilations of particular law. Summing up his study, the author shows some links between the collection of Archbishop Jan Wężyk of 1628 with the remaining codification of the pre-partition period.
