Opis:
Tadeusz Stryjeński (1849-1943) was one of the most interesting and the most hard-working architects from Galicia. He was an active architect from 1878 until the 1930s. He was an author of over one hundred various objects (mainly public buildings and tenements) built in the territory of Kraków. Architectonic contests were an important part in his professional activity. Tadeusz Stryjeński took part in twenty five contests and won in nine. For some reason independent of him he managed to implement only the plans from his first contest for the Contest for the design of a shelter for the neglected boys from the Prince Aleksander Lubomirski Foundation. The paper dwells on the history of the contest and traces the history of the building of the shelter according to the press of that time (one of the most interesting examples of neo-Renaissance in the monumental architecture of Kraków at the end of the nineteenth century). The text is preceded by some considerations on the principles of organising contests and the role of the Circles of Polish Architects in Warszawa and in Lvov, the Technical Society in Kraków. These organisations played an important role in establishing (in December 1908) the Delegation of Polish Architects, an organisation designed mainly to defend architects in their jobs and solve the problems of their milieu, including the touchy question of the contests. In all these activities Tadeusz Stryjeński took an active part.

Opis:
Jan Karmański, Zenon Kononowicz and Władysław Filipiak – these three painters are connected with Lublin and the Lublin region. Despite that they differed in almost everything, starting from their dates and places of birth, through descent and education, to creative temper, yet they all three equally loved colour. It is colour that decided about the character and appearance of their landscapes, portraits, nudes or still lifes; and colour determined particular creative attitudes, or even way of life. All three were fascinated with Kazimierz Dolny and left many paintings depicting the atmosphere and climate of this unique town. They were able to create agroup of well-known plastic signs, which permitted to identify their painting easily. It was that kind of painting which apparently stood out from the achievements of the other Lublin painters. And although the fortunes of the artists had run different courses: Karmański and Kononowicz had for many years lived in poverty, and only Filipiak could provide himself a proper standard of life through his painting; nevertheless, all of them equally deserve to be remembered. The more so, if we consider the fact that over sixty years ago it was them who contributed to the consolidation of the milieu (ZPAP was set up in Lublin) and made open to others.

Opis:
Antoni Madeyski (1862-1939) was one of the many Polish sculptors who spent several decades of his life in Rome. Although we know relatively much about the artist, there are a few works by Madeyski on the Tiber that are not known to Polish researchers. In its character the article is a contribution; it generally describes all the Roman works by the sculptor. Both the ones that are generally well-known, like Aleksander Gierymski's tombstone in Campo Verano or the new mensas with antependia, and the forgotten epitaphs in the Polish St Stanisław Church, and especially the sculptures that are passed over in silence, kept in the Polish Hospice attached to St Stanisław Church (a marble bust of Maria Lenwalowa); in the Polish Papal Institute (plaster models of busts of Jan III Sobieski and Jan Zamoyski); model of figural groups of Sts Cyril and Methodius, may be created by Madeyski; and also in the collection of the Documentation Centre of John Paul II's Pontificate (a relief with the portrait of Wanda Petrażycka).

Opis:
Władysław Oleszczyński (1808-1866) was the most outstanding Polish sculptor and medallist of the Romantic epoch, the author of the first – not existing any more today – monument of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań (1857), who, as a participant in the November Uprising was forced to remain in emigration, mainly in France, where he carried out a lot of works for the French society. He died and was buried in Rome. We know relatively little about Oleszczyński's private life, or about the very person of the artist. In the record office of the Community of the Resurrection in Rome there are two interesting documents. One of them is a list of things deposited with the Community after the artist's unexpected death; and the other one is detailed information about the expenses connected with his burial. In the office there is also one letter written by Władysław Oleszczyński to the Ressurectionists in March 1861, a copy of the artist's another – earlier – letter, a couple of letters written by his brother Antoni several months after the sculptor's death, and two letters written by his widow at roughly the same time. From them we learn the inside story of the stormy ending of Władysław Oleszczyński's marriage to an unknown French woman, which lasted for nearly thirty years. Although the cited documents and letters do not give unambiguous answers to many questions, they still broaden our knowledge of that extraordinary artist.
