Opis:
This article examines how the arousing properties of words influence the local vs. global scope of perception in the Kimchi–Palmer task. It was assumed that arousal is a stimulus property that influences a person’s mental state. Suboptimal arousal (low or high) was expected to narrow the visual scope in comparison to optimal (moderate) arousal. Words varying in arousal (three levels) and matched for valence, concreteness, frequency of appearance, and length were read by 20 young adults (8 women and 12 men, Mage = 21.85, SD = 1.69). The participants were then asked about their scope of perception using the Kimchi–Palmer task, allowing for differentiation between the priority of processing on local versus global features of compound geometrical figures. The relationship between the arousal level of the words read and the subsequent cognitive scope followed the Yerkes-Dodson law in that stimuli inducing an intermediate arousal level (versus low or high level of arousal inducements) were associated with a broader, more global cognitive scope.

Opis:
Previous research has focused on the influence of emotional valence on the effectiveness of per-suasion via the central route or the peripheral route. The purpose of this study was to answer the question of whether other dimensions of emotion, such as the origin of emotional charge (auto-matic vs. reflective) may also influence the effectiveness of persuasion. It was expected that reflective emotions would increase susceptibility to strong arguments, while automatic emotions would result in a lack of sensitivity to the quality of arguments. Emotional words of proven emotional quality were used to elicit affective states. They were chosen in order to contrast the different levels of emotional valence (negative, neutral, and positive) and the origin of emotion (automatic and reflective). It turned out that in the case of reflective conditions, a significantly higher effectiveness of persuasion was observed for strong arguments than for weak ones. In the case of automatic conditions, there was no difference in the effectiveness of persuasion depending on the quality of the arguments. There were also no differences related to emotional valence; however, the manipulation of affective states on emotional valence dimension turned out not to be effective. This suggests that the origin of emotion can be considered a factor influencing processing via the central or peripheral route to persuasion.

Opis:
The author analyzes Kazimierz Świegocki's book with respect to the most important changes in modern humanities – especially to the anthropological turn, that is the literary scholars' interest in the methods of cultural as well as comparative studies. Kłobukowski interprets Świegocki's comparative study on two planes – as an intriguing and sometimes innovative study of great Polish poets who participated in creating the literary tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries, and also as an attempt at building anthropology of literature using modern methods, but also deeply rooted in the philological tradition – based on the concept of subjectivity, whose vision may be reconstructed on the basis of the literary text. The reviewer thinks that the construction of the argument based on juxtaposing two different types of poetical anthropology that may be recognized in Mickiewicz's and Norwid's work is one of Świegocki's most interesting ideas. Świegocki's proposition seems advisable both to those who study Romanticism, and to theoreticians of literature. A vigorous and elegant style of the book makes it also recommendable to students, or even to people who are not “professionally” connected with literature.
