Opis:
The author draws our attention to the fact that the youth of Polish origin in the USA did not take up higher education for a long time. Up to now the number of young people who take up such education does not correspond to the number of the Polish ethnic group in the USA. It is the effect of the apparent, antiintellectual attitude of the American society. A tendency to achieve a rapid material success is not conducive to university studies. Only after World War II did the number of the youth of Polish origin who took up such studies increase considerably and it is increasing ever after. The author points to the fact that the prevalence of the principle of multiculture and of the „Melting Pot” theory in the U.S.A. is becoming more and more important. Consequently, it becomes a chance for the youth of Polish origin. The threat to it, though, is, as for whole society, the atmosphere of relativity and significant disorder as far as moral concepts are concerned.

Opis:
The article contains a versatile characterization of the newspaper "Nowy Dziennik". The author has been its editor since 1970. He presents the origin of the daily, its aims, its particular columns devoted to various subjects, sources of information, the network of correspondents throughout the world, and the ideological orientation which is not limited to 013e party s program. The opinions prevailing in J. Piłsudski’s and R. Dmowski’s camps as well as those of socialists and the peasants party are presented. This corresponds with the present political preferences among Polish emigrants. The newspaper sets itself the goal of fighting for a proper place for the Polish ethnic group in the American social and political life. News from Poland constitute a considerable par of the daily s contents and one of its important functions is the one of educating and mobilizing Polish emigrants. It is especially important now, that Polish parishes tend to disappear. The mobilizing function is expressed in supporting relief action for Poland, and the educational one in pointing to the tasks facing the Polish community. At present "Nowy Dziennik" is Polish biggest daily in USA. It has twelve pages /on Sundays - twenty-four/ and a circulation of 20 thousand copies /on special occasions up to 25 thousand/. The circulation is not very big compared with the number of Polish emigrants in USA, but this is due to the processes going on in the Polish community. "Nowy Dziennik" also runs its own mailorder book-shop and its own publishing office which publishes books concerned with Poland and her problems. The same staff also edits the English-language menthly entitled "New Horizon - Polish American Review", designed for the Polish American intelligentsia. "Nowy Dziennik" is financially independent.

Problems of the Polish education in the USA in the light of Rev. Józef Rokosznys report

Opis:
The article is concerned with the appraisal of Polish schools in the USA given by Rev. Józef Rokoszny (1870-1931), an outstanding social and education activist. It is presented in the context of attempts made by the Polish authorities between the two World Wars to strengthen the ties between the emigration circles and Poland. The attempts also aimed at including the Polish colony in the USA in the system of supporting the Polish reasons of State. Rev. Józef Rokoszny stayed in the USA from April to November 1930 as education instructor at the General Consulate of Poland in New York. The main subject of Rev. Rokoszny's interest were parish schools. He visited schools in Chicago, New York, Milwaukee, Denver, Detroit, Buffalo and Orchard Lake (30 elementary schools, 17 secondary ones and 6 colleges). He talked to several prominent representatives of the Polish colony. Contrary to the opinions dominating in Poland he thought that the standard of schools run by Polish Catholic parishes is not lower than that of public schools. His opinion of nun teachers was very high. In a letter to the Ministry of Education he said that the work of education instructors that was being done was futile (“contacts with Poland are necessary but everything must be done by people living here”). The education authorities did not share Rokoszny’s views so his mission was terminated after six months. After his return to Poland he filed a report in which he suggested, among others, accepting nuns for training in Poland and compiling school handbooks to be used by the Polish emigrants in the USA. He also stressed that it was inadmissible for the Polish authorities to treat the Polish emigrants in the USA instrumentally.

John Paul II was the first pope in history to appreciate the role played by the media in the modern world. He perceived the media as a modern form of communication, through which the Catholic Church could influence the shape of social and religious life in the world. This article is a preliminary analysis of the image of John Paul II in two Polish press titles published in the United States: Dziennik związkowy and Nowy Dziennik–Polish Weekly. Due to the limited framework of this publication, the article presents only a brief description of the issues that have been recognised as important for a broader analysis of the topic.

The author is a retired Professor of the Wisconsin State University − Stevens Point in the USA. The paper describes the research and cultural activities pursued at the Wisconsin State University − Stevens Point, connected with propagating knowledge about Poland and Polish culture. The Wisconsin State University − Stevens Point is one of the thirteen universities in that state, with an enrollment of about 9.000 students. It is situated in the small town of Stevens Point. Established in 1894 as a school training teachers during the next century it has developed into a dynamic university center. Stevens Point is a town with old traditions of Polish emigrantion, the emigrants being formerly mainly peasants and now belonging to the middle class as far as the third and fourth generations are concerned. One of the oldest Polish newspapers, the „Gwiazda Polarna”, established in 1908 and still being published, is an example of those traditions. The author describes the research and cultural activities, lectures, courses, exhibitions and other forms of work conducted in this environment of Polish emigrats. He devotes most space to a presentation of studies on Polish culture and generally on Poland, usually combined with a discussion of other Slav countries, especially Russia. He also presents various courses, in particular new programs of lectures on Poland, separated from the ones devoted to Central and East Europe since the peaceful revolution of "Solidarity" in 1981. In the paper the reader will also find information about the co-operation and exchange between the Wisconsin State University − Stevens Point and the Jagiellonian University.

Opis:
Artykuł zawiera istotne dane statystyczne i charakteryzuje żeńskie zgromadzenia zakonne kształcące młodzież w szkołach parafialnych pierwszego i drugiego stopnia.
Polish education abroad has always been a pillar supporting Polish culture and national identity for the Polish community in exile. Among the many valuable educational initiatives of Polish emigrants going back to 1842, the Polish education system in the United States occupies a leading position in terms of the number of schools established, the number of students and teachers, and its importance in the process of integrating the Polish diaspora. The article presents the genesis of Polish education in the United States, its developmental stages, and shows the most important problems, such as organizing professional teaching staff, creating a school financing system, and facing assimilation processes. The Polish emigration into America couting over 3 mlns, in course of time created an 8-mln US population, called Folonia. From the very beginning there arised certain pastoral difficulties. They were caused by: 1° — a lack of Polish priests.2° — conflicts arising between Polish Catholic priests and the Catholic hierarchy tending to a speedy assimilation of Poles.3° — unsatisfactory understanding of a proper place and role for Poles in American society’s culture which has many connections with the process of building and decaying of the Polish colonies.

Opis:
The article discusses the nature and function of Cyprian Norwid’s reception in Polish communities in the USA at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Using selected press texts, an attempt was made to determine the extent of Norwid’s presence in the consciousness of elites leading the Polish diaspora overseas. Titles such as “Dziennik Chicagoski”, “Zgoda”, “Polak w Ameryce”, “Ameryka-Echo” and “Kurier Polski” have been reviewed, from which the traces of the presence of Norwid’s themes have been extracted. Several thematic areas emerge from the press material, relating both to the poet’s biography, his works, but also to various contexts reflecting tendencies towards a particular perception of the poet’s figure. Many of the examples discussed here reflect stereotypical opinions and associations developed by literary circles in Poland.

The sketch presents tabloid as a neutral, not laden by emotions (hence I renounce such terms as yellow paper, scandal sheet, or rag), manner by which to sell information and entertainment. Sometimes I use such terms as sensational press, but this concerns only some tabloids. I analyze how this form of communication in social reality influences the processes of the democratization of society (extension of the freedom of the individual), how it extends the concepts of public debate on democracy, understood here as a participation in political life and in matters that have a bearing on political life. Taking the stance of a representative of political sciences, historian of ideas, specialist in media, I analyze the genesis of the idea of tabloid and the characteristic elements of this press. I point only to some factors.

Opis:
The Polish national parishes have played a principal role in the process of the inculturation of Polish immigrants with American society. Polish priests carried out the agenda of emigrant pastoral care. It was important on this agenda to maintain a tie with the Catholic faith and Polish culture, and this was gradually combined with various elements of local culture. Working on behalf of the prestige and status of the Polish ethnic group in America, they sought to improve its education, to gain a better command of the English language, and helped in making their stay legal by obtaining American citizenship. The priests shaped civic loyalty of Polonia members, and developed their patriotic feelings towards the new Homeland. The Polish parish priests themselves were also representatives of the authority of local bishops who were their superiors. Thereby they were linking factors between the ethnic parish and the Catholic Church in the USA. The Polish national parishes in the structures and financial system of the Catholic Church in America played a special role in the process of integration between Catholic Polonia and the American world. Although the Polish parishes have maintained and partly still maintain their ethnic character since the beginning of their existence, they have been established according to the model of religious structures popular in America. Moreover, the Polish parishes in the USA were subordinate to local bishops, diocesan ordinary bishops and, according to canon and civil law, were parts of one Catholic community in the multiethnic and multireligious American society. The inculturation of Polonia in the United States was also carried out through linguistic assimilation in parishes. The tendencies to make the English language popular as the everyday means of communication were apparent already among the members of the second generation of Polish immigrants. The Polish parishes had cultural societies whose members studied the output of English and American literature and art. Linguistic assimilation in Polish parishes and schools that belonged to them was carried out through a gradual shift from an ethnic language – Polish – to bilingual attitudes and the main or only use of the English language. From the 1940s on there was a rapid reverse from the teaching of the Polish language and the so-called home subjects in parochial schools. After the First World War, the authorities of the Catholic Church in America favoured the separate character and development of parishes and ethnic schools. In the inter-war period, however, they worked on behalf of a more rapid and complete Americanisation. The „melting pot” policy of the state had an enormous influence on the acceleration of assimilation processes among the members of national parishes. It was supported by some Catholic American bishops, mainly those of Anglo-Saxon origin. According to this conception and ideology, the society of the United States should be like a large and homogenous melting pot in which all national, cultural, and religious differences brought to the USA by such numerous national groups of immigrants would be melted and unified.
