Opis:
The systemic transformation in Poland after 1989 was hugely influenced by one of its key factors: Poland’s accession to the European Community. All the actions undertaken by Polish governments after 1989 were meant to prepare the Polish state for the successful accession process. 1 May 2004, when Poland and nine other countries became fully-fledged members of the Union, marks an unforgettable historic event. The paper brings the analysis of Poland’s accession to the EU and the consequences of its integration with the Community. The author also tries to present an image of a Pole as an European. In his reflection, the author makes reference to the future development of the European Union, also taking into account the latest crisis that has had its impact on the globalized world. What were the feelings that Poles experienced at the early days after the accession? What hopes and anxieties did they have? What changed in Poland after 1 May 2004, in their opinion? What is the role of Poland in the EU and of the Community in the world? How Poles evaluate Polish presence in the EU? What challenges does the EU face? These are only some of the numerous questions presented by the author of the article, dealing with the problem of Poland's accession from the perspective of political sciences, sociology and international relations.

Opis:
Ireland is one of the countries that after extending the European Union in 2004 opened the labor market for the citizens of the new member states, one of them being Poland. Soon Ireland became a very popular country for Poles’ gainful travels – it is estimated that after four years their number on the Green Island is about 200-250 thousand. A majority of them declares satisfaction with their life in emigration, often assuming that they will remain there for long or even forever. Poles are present in all the sectors of Irish economy but their presence can also be noticed in other fields than their work. White-and-red colors and various Polish events have become part of the Irish landscape for good. Polish organizations, associations, media and companies are established; Polish pastorates and Polish schools are developed; festivals, concerts, exhibitions and sports events are organized. Also many other initiatives take place that positively influence the Poles’ image on the Island as well as prove mutual interest between Poles and Irishmen. This is due to the fact that Irishmen gave a warm welcome to newcomers from other countries, including Poland; they have shown a lot of understanding and they spare no effort to make their life outside their own country easier and to deepen the process of integration. Although single cases of discrimination, of breaking the workers’ rights or unpleasant incidents in which Poles participate do happen, the presence of Poles in Ireland is appreciated by their hosts.

Opis:
Currently, Polish citizens are the most numerous national minority in Ireland and Polish is the second most frequently used language in Ireland. Such a situation has led to changes initiated in Poland’s breakthrough 2004 history, in which Poland joined the European Union, and the Irish authorities immediately opened the labor market for the citizens of the Vistula. Meanwhile, the Polish presence on the Green Island before this period was rather modest, and the mutual knowledge of Poles about Ireland and Ireland about Poland — very small. In the case of Ireland, it is not possible to speak of the „traditional”, multi-generational Polonia as the beginning of the organization of Poles living in Ireland has started in 1970s. This article is an attempt at general presentation of the Polish presence on the Green Island during the period before Poland’s accession to the EU.

Opis:
The article analyzes the problem of aiding emigrants from the Polish lands in the long period from the end of the 19th century to the contemporary post-accession migration (after joining the structures of the European Union by Poland in 2004), excluding the period of the Polish People’s Republic, when emigrating from Poland was stopped for ideological reasons. In the main part of the article the author chronologically analyzes the social and political conditionings of the emigration processes, pointing to the forms of aiding emigrants in their preparations to leaving Poland. She considers the actions taken by various state and social institutions, as well as the special role played by the Catholic Church and the clergy in the care taken of emigrants. The analyses are based on historical and sociological works, and on the sources from Polish and Ukrainian (Lvov) archives. The article shows similarities and differences in the forms and circumstances of providing care and aid to emigrants. It also draws the reader’s attention to peculiar, especially modern, forms of support given to economic migrants. In the conclusion basic arguments justifying the significance of various type of aid given to emigrants are pointed to, like: a) protection from ethnic exclusion in the target country, b) protection from the loss of cultural-ethnic identity in the face of a cultural clash or the effect of globalization processes, c) protection from abuses and exploitation of emigrants by dishonest employment agents, d) making emigrants realize the need of proper actions protecting the family, and especially the children, from the negative consequences of separation, e) the significance of social and organizational actions for emigrants who have troubles with the basic actions necessary for fulfilling the requirements connected with going abroad.
