Current theories of literary research deriving from the sphere of postmodernist aestheticism make us particularly alert to the creative power of the word with regard to non-verbal reality. The word, subject to a variety of immanent conventions, including the convention of literary genre, creates unique textual entities. The alertness enables us to look anew at the autobiographic stamp so characteristic of Cyprian Norwid's work. Earlier scholars have used its presence to illustrate their biographic arguments, but as they discussed various elements of the poet's biography and cited passages from his works they erred (as I think) in ascribing equal information value to his pieces representing different literary genres. The present study was initially written on the assumption that the reading of Norwid's letters would confirm the vision of the poet's self-portrait familiar from other sources (and from letters, previously considered on a par with his other works). That expectation was borne out only in part. The letters do reveal first of all the familiar figure of a solitary man, injured by people and intending to lay down the pen for the fine arts or else to start writing exclusively in French. However, it also becomes clear that the solitude often was of Norwid's own choice. It was the effect of his moods or of his genuine dislike of people, sometimes a dislike they did nothing to deserve. The letters show a man obsessed by ambition. This trait, commendable from today's point of view because it was certainly helpful to Norwid in his tremendous task of creating novel things and in overcoming the many reverses of fortune, was regarded by his contemporaries as unhealthy ambition. It is seen at its clearest in his self-appointed role as an heir to the great trio of Polish Romantic poets (a trio which Norwid's own letters had in fact helped to create). Norwid was an indigent writer, materially dependent on other people. His letters reveal a variety of reactions to that undoubtedly humiliating dependence. The reactions were not always fair to others. As a perpetual debtor Norwid must have been a troublesome person, also because he could hardly ever find the humility and critical attitude that the situation required. What was tragic about the poet's situation was that such a critical attitude might have destroyed him as an artist. Norwid paid a high price for his independence, which only our own century has come to regard as the independence of a genius.

The myth about Apollo and Marsyas is the starting-point for the comparisons made in the present paper. The parallel drawn between the poems which are so distant in time but refer to the same tradition is also a contribution to the study of the history of classicism and romanticism in literature. Norwid knew the legend of Apollo and Marsyas very well and his attitude to the former was ambivalent. As a matter of fact, he recognized Apollo as the patron of an important trend in the art of antiquity but he criticized the imitators of Apollonian (i.e. Dorian-classical) art. However, the Troyan-Phrygian-Dionysian trend which Norwid distinguished himself was recognized by him as a „figure” (in the sense Auerbach used this term) of Polish national-folk art. In ”A Dorio ad Phrygium” whose action is set in Poland after the November uprising in 1830, that is ”a good long time after the Troyan war”, the poet recognized Apollonism as a „figure” of all sorts of fossilized conventions in the sphere of art, political systems and fashion. His poem was constructed in the mode of an autothematic expression. The poem discussing the contest between Apollonism and Phrygian art becomes, under the strength of Norwid’s pen, a ground for a literary play: a play on the opposition between realized poetics (folk-styled) and discursive poetics (a parody of the conventions used in the poetry of antiquity). In both poems by Zbigniew Herbert a similar anti-classicistic opposition is found. Both poems are critical to Apollonism as a prototype of universalistic and autocratic tendencies in art. In Norwid’s as well as in Herbert’s poetry, art is interlaced with politics and law. The contest between Apollo and Marsyas is undoubtedly a contest between an autocrat and the people; it is an opposition of the nominal (formal or conventional) and actual (true and factual) form of human existence. Both poems are romantic and in both the poets express their disappointment with classicism. Herbert, like Norwid in his invocation of Apollo, puts a processual construction on the development of art. He seems to say: ”we all start with Apollo, we create according to this imposed convention feeling that our efforts are not without their sense and that art is a means of knowing the world”. But in course of time, Dorian ”is taken the place of ’ by Phrygian. For Herbert this is a chance of originality but this is also a tragedy of the poet’s search in the world where no guide-posts can be found. Norwid criticizes nominalism as well. His poem, however, has no structurally closed construction and therefore it seems to forecast the irresolution of the 20th century poets - exiles from the paradise of the epochs of classical art.

Warto podkreśłić walory utworu Fredry, który sam, niepewny rangi tematu, przekroczył wprawdzie ramy jednoaktówki, ale nie uznał za właściwe poświęcić jej trzech aktów. Jako jedyny uznał on pośpiech za nową cechę współczesnej nam cywilizacji i przedstawił go jako określone zjawisko, nie ograniczając się do farsowych efektów.
Fredro's piece is to be commended for its qualities. Fredro himself, unsure of the status of his topic, devoted more than a one-act play to it, but did not consider it worthy of three acts. He saw haste as a new feature of our civilisation and presented it as a problem, not restricting his play to mere farcical effects.

Generally speaking, people in Poland invoked the figure of Tyrtaeus during pro-independence risings or shortly after their fall. Norwid did the same. Norwid saw Tyrtaeus first of all as a teacher of modern national consciousness and an awakener of socially minded imagination, and only in second place as a military leader. It was in this spirit that he translated the Greek poet's elegy. Viewed in such light, Norwid's tragedy Tyrtej represents a lesson in the modern way of thinking about the relations between the individual and society. The unfinished state of Norwid's work makes it impossible to judge where the balance of the arguments lay in the conflict between the two sides. One could agree that some features of Spartan society were reminiscent of the tsarist system. Yet one might just as well regard Norwid's Sparta as a critical depiction of the old Sarmatist Poland, the Poland of noblemen's unruliness, noblemen's bravado and... noblemen's inanity. Against such a background the idealised Athens appeared as a republic based on the popular element and proclaiming the democratic ideals of equality of all citizens and respect for God-given truths. It is difficult to say whether Norwid knew Sen grobów, but he must have felt uneasy about that poetic apotheosis of the insurgents' martyrdom. For that reason in the same year (1865) he began to reflect critically on the ideological context of the risings, subjecting it to sharp criticism. The drama Tyrtej, together with his previously mentioned lyrical poems, mainly the ode Do spółczesnych, is the mainstay of Norwid's important and instructive teaching on modern patriotism.
