Am 4. Mai 1753 wählte das Szczyrzycer Kapitel auf seiner vom Generalvikar der Polnischen Provinz und Abt von Pelplin Hieronim Turno geleiteten Sitzung den Pelpliner Profess Florian Andrzej Gotartowski, Wappen Leliwa, zum neuen Abt von Szczyrzyc. Nach dem Vorbild seiner Vorgänger im Amt des Abtes von Szczyrzyc erwies er sich als würdiger Fortführer der noch unter dem Abt Franciszek de Hirtenberg Pastoriusz begonnenen Renovierungs- und Bauarbeiten. Ein Ausdruck seiner Sorge für die Klosterbibliothek war, dass Abt Gotartowski die Anweisung erteilte, die Bücherbestände zu notieren. Schade, dass bis in unsere Zeit nur ein Fragment des damals erstellten „Cathalogus librorum Monasterii Ciricensis iuxta alphabetum authorum mense Augusto Anno Domini 1755” erhalten geblieben ist. Es muss hervorgehoben werden, dass die erhaltenen zwei Blätter des in der Amtszeit von Abt Gotartowski erstellten Bücherverzeichnisses im Rahmen des Buchstabens „A” die Werke hervorragender Theologen und Philosophen enthalten, die die Gestaltung des christlichen Bewusstseins der vergangenen Jahrhunderte unauslöschlich geprägt haben.

Das Zisterzensierkloster in Szczyrzyc entstand in der ersten Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts infolge einer Stiftung von Teodor Gryfi ta. In der Zeit der Polnischen Teilungen befand sich das Kloster im österreichischen Teilungsgebiet. Die österreichischen Behörden, die ihre Politik einer kirchlichen Reorganisation in den besetzten Gebieten konsequent durchsetzten, machten kein Geheimnis aus ihren Plänen, das Kloster zu liquidieren. Dank der in Wien intensiv unternommenen Bemühungen und insbesondere aufgrund der vom Kloster geleiteten Schule und Pfarrgemeinde konnte die Aufl ösung des Klosters letztendlich doch noch verhindert werden. Es existiert somit ununterbrochen bis auf den heutigen Tag. Wegen der unternommenen Versuche, das Kloster zu liquidieren und seinen Status zu verändern (von der Abtei zum Priorat), sind seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die letzten Jahre hinein immer wieder Hypothesen aufgetaucht, ein Teil der wertvollen Bibliotheksbestände sei aus dem Kloster in Szczyrzyc nach Lemberg, Tarnów oder Petersburg abtransportiert worden. Aber nach erfolgter Analyse der erhaltenen Inventarverzeichnisse der Klosterbücher aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und vor allem der Bibliothek selbst muss eine solche Eventualität ausgeschlossen werden. Aufgrund des hier und da erhaltenen Exemplars eines aus dem Kloster in Szczyrzyc stammenden Buches fi ndet die These von der Fortschaffung des gesamten Bestandes der Klosterbibliothek oder eines größeren Teils davon wohl kaum eine Bestätigung.

In the period from 25th March until 14th May 2006 at ,Old Synagogue Gallery, affiliated to the Circuit Museum in Nowy Sącz, ,Historical Writing of Cistercian Fathers of Szczyrzyc was exhibited. The purpose of the exhibition was to display the most valuable and the oldest historical writings kept in custody of the Archive and the Cistercian Library in Szczyrzyc, and to appeal the same to a wider audience. The exhibition inter alia covered: medieval parchments with seals, manuscript books, beautifully decorated antiphonaries, graduals and cantionals and old prints as well as the only incunabula found in Poland. Moreover, the exhibition was complemented with the Cistercian costumes, enlarged reproductions of pages of historic books, and pictures that normally decorate the walls of the monastery in Szczyrzyc.

Opis:
Legacies from the donors of the monastery, testamentary depositions and gifts were the main form of supply of books to the library of Szczyrzyc, both in the early days of the monastery as well as over several hundred years of its existence and operation. It was a quite common phenomenon for the vast majority of monastic libraries in the past centuries. In the light of the preserved archival material, and above all the books from the library of Szczyrzyc, it can be concluded that it was one of the most important sources of enlargement of the monastic library. This statement applies to the entire period of the functioning of this library, but especially to the beginning of its formation when the collections mainly included manuscripts and liturgical codes.On the basis of the information about provenance, it is possible to identify three groups of donors to the library of Szczyrzyc: monks (abbots and priors) from Szczyrzyc, secular clergy, representatives of other religious orders and lay people. Among the donated books are primarily theological and liturgical works as well as the collections of sermons necessary for the effective pastoral care of the parish.

Der Artikel betrifft die in den Tauf-, Trauungs- und Begräbnisbüchern der Pfarrei Babimost (heute Diözese Zielona Gora-Gorzow) vom Ende des 17. bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erwähnten Geistlichen. Der Autor untersuchte 11 Kirchenbücher, die sich im Pfarrarchiv in Babimost befinden. Die 246 dort erwähnten Geistlichen wurden in drei Gruppen eingeteilt. Zur ersten Gruppe gehören die Geistlichen, die sich von Amts wegen mit der Seelsorge befaßten - die Präpositen sowie ihre Helfer (Kommenden-Vikare, Altaristen, Kapläne, Präbendare, Prediger und emeritie1ie Geistliche). Die zweite Gruppe bilden die Welt- und Ordenspriester, die die heiligen Sakramente vertretungshalber verwalteten oder aus persönlichen Gründen des Schreibers in den Matrikelbüchern erwähnt wurden. In der dritten Gruppe befinden sich diejenigen Geistlichen, die aufgrund fehlender Angaben im Quellenmaterial keiner der obigen Gruppen zugeordnet werden können. Diese Arbeit stellt eine Huldigung an alle Priester der Pfarrei Babimost dar, die im Berichtszeitraum die Geschichte der katholischen Kirche im Lebuser Land mitgeschrieben haben.

The article was written to illustrate the difficulties we encounter when attempting to convey the biography of Aelred, a famous 12th century English abbot of Rievaulx. The difficulties are linked with the fact that Aelred lived in medieval times and his biography was written in the form of a hagiography. This style of writing was very popular in the middle ages and usually served to emphasize the holiness of a person’s life, i.e. to demonstrate an exemplary life of Christian virtues rather than as an attempt to concentrate on biographical details. The latter rather served as points of reference to the person in question and were expressed in hagiographic style, i.e. with focus on models of behavior, achievements and miracles that fit the style, based on examples taken from the Bible and the lives of other popular saints. Written in monastic circles, such works took on the form of biographies of saints and were often written to satisfy a specific cause (T.J. Heffernan). This is the type of biography we are dealing with here. When attempting to convey Aelred’s biography in the contemporary meaning of the term, we must first sift through its hagiographic form and supplement information contained therein with other historical and literary sources. In our case, the attempt was carried out in six points, with focus on: the primary source of Aelred of Rievaulx’s biography, Vita Aelredi (1); its author, Walter Daniel (2); the reasons why this work was written (3); its hagiographic form (4); the work’s internal sources, i.e. sources linked with the author’s own circles (5); as well as outside historical and literary sources of information concerning Aelred (6).

The article was written to illustrate the possible impact of Vita Martini by Sulpicius Severus on Aelred of Rievaulx’s Vita Niniani. Both works are hagiographies, thus were written as prime examples of faith and Christian virtues without excessive focus on biographical accuracy, as was common during the medieval period. The works were created in diverse cultural and historical settings: the former portrays the life of Saint Martin of Tours, a very popular medieval bishop of Gaul, who was active during the 5th century; the hagiography was written by his disciple, Sulpicius Severus. The latter depicts the life of a missionary active in southern England, also in the 5th century, Saint Ninian of Whithorn. St. Ninian’s hagiography was, however, written seven centuries later by a well-known English abbot from Rievaulx, St. Aelred. The possible influence of Sulpicius Severus’ work on Vita Niniani by Aelred of Rievaulx can be concluded due to the similarities between the two hagiographies, the popularity of Vita Martini in Cistercian circles and, simultaneously, an almost complete lack of historical information regarding St. Ninian’s life. The fact that Aelred quotes the Bede Venerable’ history note from the 8th century – which mentions that St. Martin was St. Ninian’s role model in the field of missionary care and pastoral work – as his chief resource, makes this influence is all the more probable. To carry out this article’s objective, the contents have been divided into three sections: the creation of Vita Niniani; a comparison of Bishop Ninian of Whithorn as a historical figure (based on contemporary historical and archeological research) with the portrait painted by Aelred (based on the Bede Venerable’ note and a piece of literature by an unknown writer); to finally show a comparison of Vita Niniani and Vita Martini.
