    Modern critical reception characterizes patriarch Isaac as a particular character type: the schlemiel. This article provides a tour through the cumulative evidence for this comedic read, focusing on Genesis 27, the blessing of Jacob. It provides a revised narratological and literary context, arguing that Isaac’s fivefold questioning demonstrates not confusion, but awareness: he knows exactly which son is in front of him. The paper presents an alternative narratological and literary context for Isaac, framing his questions in terms of the editing process: a synchronic reading of Isaac’s acumen is corroborated by evidence from diachronic reading. The redaction history of the Isaac material in chapter 26 yields a number of points suggesting the dependence of the Abraham material on the Isaac narrative. A number of features indicate a stronger, less subordinate Isaac figure based on the earlier tradition revealed by a complex transmission history than the image arising from the mainstream synchronic reading of chapter 27 seems to depict.

    This article presents the role played by philosophy and biblical exegesis in controversy with Apollinarius of Laodicea. First of all it tries to present the general context of the dispute, then to develop Basil’s theological thinking and apply it to the problematic Christological field, where Apollinarius directed his challenge. Faced with the anthropological-soteriological problem relating to the defence of the integrity of Christ’s human nature, Basil draws on Stoic and Neoplatonic philosophical tradition. Then, this paper focuses attention on Basil’s interpretation of some biblical passages in the confutation of Apollinaris’ doctrine. Basil had started the controversy by describing Apollinarius as supporter of fabulous theories, which are not based on the Scriptures, and of Judaizing ideas which concerned the eschatological renewal. Generally, the Cappadocian prefers to distance himself from Apollinaris and does not intervene in complete manner on the theological debate. The bishop – monk tries to unmask the errors of the opponents’ theories starting with the correct interpretation of the scriptural passages used by Apollinarius. In some points of his works, the Cappadocian insists that the Savior had a soul capable of feeling and suffering. According to the bishop of Caesarea some of anthropological and philosophical principles used by Apollinaris, along with the distorted reading of biblical texts, revealed the ambiguities and the inconsistencies of his arguments.

    Artykuł prezentuje sposób, w jaki Jan Kasjan, przede wszystkim w Collatio Patrum XIV, radzi sobie z aintelektualizmem (czasem wręcz antyintelektualizmem) niektórych elementów tradycji monastycznej i erudycyjnym charakterem innych. We wprowadzeniu, zarysowane zostały ogólne uwarunkowania piśmienności (literackości) we wczesnym monastycyzmie (z uwzględnieniem świadectw o św. Antonim z Prologu do De doctrina christiana św. Augustyna oraz o abba Teodorze z De institutis coenobiorum Kasjana). W głównej części artykułu przeanalizowana została Collatio XIV, czyli rozmowa z abba Nesterosem o wiedzy duchowej. Obok klasycznych podziałów wiedzy oraz sensów biblijnych, omówione zostały: 1) medium przekazu samych dzieł Kasjana (pisanych, lecz zawierających pewną krytykę pisma, zwłaszcza samej tylko erudycji); 2) uniwersalności kultury pisma; 3) znaczenia pojęcia medytacji, w tym nocnej (niekoniecznie obejmującej jedynie nocną służbę liturgiczną, ale i czas przeznaczony na odpoczynek); 4) dynamiki rozwoju duchowego słuchacza/czytelnika Pisma św., w tym tytułowej trudności, charakterystycznej dla czytelnika młodego i wykształconego – przechodzenia od erudycji do doświadczenia. Głównym wnioskiem artykułu jest, że Kasjan reprezentuje wyważoną linię w kwestii chrześcijańskiego intelektualizmu (gnozy). Choć nie porzuca żadnej z intelektualnych zdobyczy swojego pierwotnego środowiska, którego problemy odzwierciedla Collatio XIV, to formułuje uniwersalną propozycję również dla chrześcijan niewykształconych, którzy mogą być uczestnikami nie tylko chrześcijańskiej praxis, ale również theoria.
    The paper presents how John Cassian, particularly in his Collatio Patrum XIV, deals both with the a-intelectual (not to say with the anti-intellectual) and the erudite elements of the monastic tradition. In the introduction, the general conditions of literacy in the early monasticism have been depicted (with the special reference to the example of St. Anthony as indicated in the Prologue to St. Augustine’s De doctrina christiana and to abba Theodor in Cassian’s De institutis coenobiorum). In the main part of the article, Collatio XIV, that is the conversation with abba Nesteros on spiritual knowledge, has been analysed. In addition to classical divisions of knowledge and Biblical senses, the following topics have been discussed: (1) the transmission medium of Cassian’s books themselves (written, yet containing some criticism of writing and, above all, of a mere erudition); (2) universality of the written culture; (3) the meaning of the notion of meditation, also anight one (not necessarily covering only the night office, but also time dedicated for rest); (4) the dynamics of the spiritual development of the listener/reader of the Holy Scriptures, including the difficulty characteristic of a young and educated reader – addressed in the paper’s title – how to pass from a mere erudition to a true experience. The main conclusion of the paper is that Cassian represents a balanced attitude towards the Christian intellectualism (gnosis). Although he does not abandon any of the intellectual achievements of his original environment, whose problems are reflected in Collatio XIV, he is able to formulate a universal proposal also for uneducated Christians who can be participants not only in Christian praxis, but also in theoria.

    The article reconsiders the structure of Clement’s writing Quis dives salvetur? and as a consequence questions the traditional designation of this text as a homily. In the first part, the article focuses on the Gospel text quoted by Clement and attempts to explain some of the unusual choices of the text. In the second part, it highlights some pastorally interesting or, on the contrary, controversial aspects of Clement’s interpretation: (a) the use of the Stoic concept of indifferent things, which makes it possible to give emphasis to the freedom of human decision; (b) the thorough justification of the allegorical interpretation of Mk 10, 21; (c) the pastoral project of the “divine business” based on Lk 16, 9 and finally (d) the possibility of a second repentance after baptism justified by the story of the Apostle John.

    Przedmiotem analizy jest dokument Papieskiej Komisji Biblijnej „Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele”. Jest on najpierw odczytany w kontekście odnowy biblijnej, jaka miała miejsce w Kościele katolickim w XX wieku, w szczególności w związku z konstytucją Dei Verbum Soboru Watykańskiego II. Nowością dokumenty PKB jest położenie większego akcentu na kwestię aktualizacji i inkulturacji Biblii, jak również zwrócenie uwagi na duszpasterską rolę wspólnot podstawowych podejmujących lekturę Pisma Świętego. Pewną słabością dokumentu „Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele” jest zauważalny w nim brak współpracy biblistów z teologiami pastoralnymi. Ten mankament jest przezwyciężony w adhortacji Verbum Domini, której główny postulat zawiera się w „ubiblijnieniu całego duszpasterstwa”. W konsekwencji adhortacja stwarza nowe możliwości animacji biblijnej duszpasterstwa, rozwijając i pogłębiając postulaty wysunięte wcześniej w dokumencie „Interpretacji Biblii w Kościele”.
    The first aim of the article is to place the document The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church within the context of the biblical renewal of the 20th century. Maintaining a continuity with the constitution Dei Verbum, the PBC puts in its document new elements which indicate the place of the Bible in the Church. It concerns mainly the actualization and inculturation of the Holy Scripture. Vital for pastoral work are recommendations on the biblical apostolate, above all those referring to basic communities that read the Bible. The analysis of the fourth chapter of the PBC’s document also yielded some critical comments concerning the presented postulates. The weakness of this document is, without any doubt, the fact that it was written from the biblical scholarly point of view, without the collaboration of pastoral theologians of various specialities. This fundamental deficiency of the document The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church is absent in exhortation Verbum Domini. Postulates presented by Pope Benedict XVI referring to “biblical animation of all pastoral work” show that the Bible is not an addition to pastoral work, but rather its source and essence. Proposals contained in the exhortation Verbum Domini give new opportunities for biblical animation in many areas of the life of Church.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest góralkowi, niewielkiemu biblijnemu stworzeniu, które sprawiło w ciągu wieków wiele problemów identyfikacyjnych tłumaczom i egzegetom Biblii (zob. Kpł 11,5; Pwt 14,7; Ps 104,18; Prz 30,26). Pierwszym etapem było wprowadzenie przez tłumaczy Septuaginty w miejsce szerzej nieznanego hebrajskiego terminu szafan równie słabo kojarzonego greckiego ekwiwalentu choirogrillios. Dało to podstawy do różnych identyfikacji. Pojawiły się odniesienia do zająca, jeża, a nawet świni. Rozwijająca się egzegeza biblijna, bazująca na nieścisłościach i nieporozumieniach w tej kwestii, wprowadziła dodatkowe nieporozumienia. W ten sposób jeden hebrajski szafan zaczął być rozumiany jako dwa różne zwierzęta i komentowany jako jeż i zając (np. św. Augustyn). Doszło również do procesu odwrotnego: cechy dwóch różnych zwierząt używane jako ekwiwalenty szafana zostały skompilowane w jednym stworzeniu (św. Hieronim). Autor artykułu, który stara się uporządkować informacje związane z identyfikacją szafana, podaje starożytne świadectwa zachowane u Ojców Kościoła, które wskazują, że góralek już wtedy został zidentyfikowany. Niestety, ze względu na ograniczony obszar jego występowania i w związku z tym słabe kojarzenie tego zwierzęcia wśród czytelników/odbiorów Biblii te informacje o nim nie zostały szerzej rozpowszechnione i wykorzystane. Ta skomplikowana materia, z jaką mamy do czynienia w przypadku szafana, i dziś sprawia trudności badaczom oraz autorom chcącym odnieść się do tego zagadnienia.
    The article discusses the hyrax (dassie), a small Biblical creature which over the centuries has caused translators and exegetes of the Bible many problems of identification (see Lev. 11:5; Deut. 14:7; Psalm 104:18; Prov. 30:26). Early in this process, in place of the otherwise unknown Hebrew term saphan the Septuagint translators introduced a likewise not widely-known Greek equivalent, choirogrillios. This inevitably gave rise to several different identifications, with references to the hare, hedgehog, or even hog. Over time, the resultant Biblical exegesis, based on compounded inaccuracies and misunderstandings, introduced still other misinterpretations. In this way, the one Hebrew word saphan began to be perceived as two distinct animals and commented upon as a hedgehog and a hare (Augustine). A reverse phenomenon also occurred, whereby the features of two different animals used as saphan equivalents were actually combined into one composite creature (St. Jerome). Nevertheless, the present article attempts to organise all the relevant information concerning the identification of saphan. It also lists testimonies, preserved in texts of the Church Fathers, indicating that in their day the hyrax had in fact already been identified. Unfortunately, due to the creature's limited geographical range, the readers/audience of the Bible were not usually familiar with this animal. That is why accurate information about the hyrax has not been spread and used more widely. Thus, the complicated issues concerning saphan present challenges, even today, to the researchers, scholars and authors wishing to write about it.

    Rozległemu zakresowi zainteresowań teologicznych radykalnej ortodoksji odpowiada szerokie rozumienie objawienia. W artykule zaprezentowano, jakim ujęciom sprzeciwiają się, a jakie interpretacje objawienia proponują zwolennicy ruchu. Podążając za Tomaszem z Akwinu, reprezentanci radykalnej ortodoksji przyjmują, że objawienie jest wydarzeniem, w którym łączą się oświecenie intelektu, interpretacja rzeczywistości w tym świetle oraz wewnętrzna przemiana duszy. Taki punkt widzenia wiąże się z odrzuceniem nowożytnej koncepcji objawienia (dziedzictwo Suáreza). Zdaniem reprezentantów radykalnej ortodoksji powrót do patrystyki i średniowiecza, zwłaszcza do metafizyki partycypacji, ma pozwolić na przekroczenie dualizmów wiary i rozumu oraz natury i łaski. Henriego de Lubaca paradoks surnaturel zostaje rozciągnięty również na kwestie egzegezy Pisma Świętego oraz rozwoju doktryny. Poruszono także zagadnienie relacji teologii i filozofii. Dyskusję z poglądami liderów ruchu należy sprowadzić do metasporu dotyczącego biegunowości: jedność – rozróżnienie. W zakończeniu stanowisko radykalnej ortodoksji zostało ukazane na tle katolickiej teologii. Okazuje się, że radykalizm charakteryzujący ruch sprawia, że ortodoksyjna równowaga typowa dla katolicyzmu chwieje się w posadach.
    A broad understanding of revelation corresponds to a wide range of theological interests of radical orthodoxy. The article shows which conceptions are struggled against and which interpretations of revelation are promoted by the movement’s supporters. Following Thomas Aquinas, representatives of radical orthodoxy assume that revelation is an event which combines illumination of the intellect, the interpretation of reality in this light and internal transformation of a soul. Such a point of view leads to rejection of a modern conception of revelation (Suárez’s heritage). According to representatives of radical orthodoxy, by coming back to patristic and medieval roots, especially to metaphysics of participation, one can overcome dualisms of faith and reason together with those of nature and grace. Henri de Lubac’s surnaturel paradox is spread onto issues of biblical exegesis and development of doctrine. Issues of relation of theology to philosophy is dealt with as well. In fact the discussion with opinions of leaders of the movement should be reduced to a meta-argument concerning the polarity: unity vs distinction. Finally, the attitude of radical orthodoxy is presented against a background of catholic theology. The radicalism characteristic of the movement turns out to simultaneously shake the orthodox balance typical of Catholicism.
