Opis:
The article is an attempt to arouse a discussion about the originality of the design of Roman Christian basilica. The author deals with the form of basilica Constantiniana and strives to reconstruct its architectonic and functional programme. Formal borrowings from forum basilicas and imperial audience halls have been indicated. The formal adoption from those objects has been justified in two ways. The idea of acquiring the scale and inside arrangement from forum basilicas stemmed from the similarity of function. In turn, hierarchical order of the interior was achieved due to an apse moved to the shorter side with the entrances on the opposite one; such a compositional solution was taken from imperial basilicas. It was aimed to focus an attention of the faithful at actions which were taking place against the apse as well as at the bishop himself. The apse’s symbolic significance raised the rank of a building, thus granting a bishop the emperor’s authority. The development of Roman Christian basilica – understood as such process – turned this object into original architectonic creation. It joined ingeniously the function of gathering the faithful (procedure unknown to the prior Roman cult architecture) with the visualisation of the symbolism of power – of a bishop, in this case – emanating from the form of the apse and from the structure of the building, both derived from imperial basilicas.

Opis:
In the course of centuries the Early Christian sanctuaries of the martyrs either continued their purpose and remained the sacred destinations or fell into ruin and became forgotten. There was not much interest in the study of them, at least until the XVIth century, the Counter-Reformation period, when the evidence of sources was used as a weapon to defeat the opponents of the cult of the saints. Ipso facto the study has become only a devotional enterprise. Religiously oriented investigations of Early Christian sanctuaries became more scientific later, with the development of the Christian archaeology, as it gradually separated from theological studies. The remains of the monuments finally started to be regarded as a precious heritage, which should be carefully excavated, documented and well preserved. With G.B. de Rossi’s work the interest in the subject of Christian archaeology increased. Initiated by him the huge archaeological campaign spread in the latin West and goes on till present day. The recent research challenge is to make the picture of the earliest sanctuaries more clear by removing the confessional additions and trying to face the sources in broader, interdisciplinary context.

Opis:
There are already several detailed studies of historical books of the collegiate of Wiślica, the authors of which, if possible, tried to reconstruct its history and the fonds, beginning with the foundation of canon group equipped with handheld liturgical books and ending with the analysis of inventories from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. In this context, the library of the Chapter of Wiślica appears to be an exception in comparison with the poorly processed and identified collegiate collections. The inventory and analysis of the historical remains of the library resulted in new discoveries, allowing to complement the knowledge of the library at the collegiate of Wiślica functioning in the Old Polish period. What is especially valuable is the discovery of two incunabula, not recorded in previous studies on the library of Wiślica. Another important thing is the survival of at least 18 manuscripts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. One more valuable source located in the parish archive is the inventory of the chapter library of 1682. Also in this case, we can identify some of the existing manuscripts which were included in the previously unknown inventory. It thus turns out that, despite the plundering of the collegiate church in 1656 and later (during which the most valuable books were regularly plundered), the remains of the former chapter and vicars’ libraries remained in their place.
