This paper constitutes out of necessity only a partial/fragmentary analysis of the influence of Christianity on the culture of the United Sates. There is no doubt that the wish to create a truly Christian society which could be a “new Israel” was a strong motive which became the underlying cause for the founding of the USA. The “founding myth” has been reflected not only in the proclaimed constitution with a pioneering principle of separating the state from the religion but also present in everyday life of a rapidly developing nation, continually fuelled by Protestant leaders. The power of the myth was sustained and spontaneously stimulated by the successive waves of European immigrants systematically Americanized by the local population. The inseparable element of American lifestyle is a specific presence of Christianity in the public sphere in the form of civil religion. After the crisis associated with the expansion of secularism (intellectuals’ heresy after the Second World War) there was a great revival of Christianity in the eighties of the previous century. It was influenced by a fervent religious rhetoric of President R. Reagan and by the attack of Protestant conservatives soon allied with conservatism of Catholic writers/publicists. Despite the growing attitudes of religious indifference, political and social life of contemporary America is permeated with religious elements, declaration of faith in God being perceived positively. A marked religious revival although encompassing only some part of the society makes America, in contrast to Europe, a country of a clearly Christian character.

Artykuł prezentuje i ocenia jedną z prób hellenizacji chrześcijaństwa. Chodzi o Homerocentony, powstające w kręgach chrześcijańskich od IV wieku utwory, przekazujące przesłanie Ewangelii niemal wyłącznie za pomocą słownictwa Iliady i Odysei. Tekst zawiera omówienie techniki tworzenia tych dzieł, ich treść, formę i teologię. Analiza Homerocentonów prowadzi do następujących wniosków: a) nie da się zrozumieć i właściwie zinterpretować chrześcijaństwa bez znajomości poematów homeryckich; b) Ewangelia jest tylko nową interpretacją Iliady i Odysei; c) chrześcijaństwo nie wnosi nowych treści, a jedynie porządkuje to, co dostępne w kulturze.
This article presents and evaluates one of the attempts to Hellenize Christianity. It concerns the Homerocentos, works written in Christian circles from the 4th century onwards, which convey the message of the Gospel almost exclusively using the vocabulary of the Iliad and the Odyssey. The text includes a discussion of the technique of creating these works, their content, form, and theology. The analysis of Homerocentos leads to the following conclusions: a) it is impossible to understand and properly interpret Christianity without the knowledge of Homeric poems; b) the Gospel is only a new interpretation of the Iliad and the Odyssey; c) Christianity does not bring new content, but only organizes what is available in culture.

Cesarz Konstantyn nie tylko zdecydowanie zniósł skutki senatus consultum z roku 35, zakazującego wyznawania chrześcijaństwa, lecz także przekształcił je w Imperium Rzymskim z illicita superstitio w religio licita. Jednak już przed Konstantynem były takie próby – usiłował to dokonać Galien, jednak tylko z efektem częściowym i czasowym; być może zamierzali uczynić to także Hadrian, Aleksander Sewer i Heliogabal, jednak bez powodzenia. Najbardziej niezwykłą, chociaż problematyczną, relację do chrześcijaństwa miał Tyberiusz. W niniejszym artykule przeanalizowano źródła oraz znaczenie lekceważonego zazwyczaj senatus consultum z roku 35, które jest potwierdzone nie tylko u Tertuliana, ale także u Porfiriusza i w Aktach Apoloniusza, Senatora i Męczennika.

The booklet entitled Christianity. Fundamental Teachings, published by the Joint Commission of Churches in Turkey in 2018, expresses the shared beliefs of the Christian Churches in Turkey. It can be seen as a landmark in inter-church efforts to draw closer together. Trying to explain Christianity to non- Christians, the booklet presents the key elements of the Christian faith in a clear and easily comprehensible way. This article provides a synthetic presentation of the content of this booklet and shows issues that are important in the Turkish context. Since the call for “an ecumenical catechism” resonates from time to time in the international and inter-church areas, this joint publication of the Churches in Turkey can be a good example of such a catechism for other Churches worldwide. Moreover, this booklet can serve as a good teaching tool for Christians or non-Christians. Thus it is worth studying, translating, commenting on and implementing after being appropriately adjusted to other social, cultural and religious contexts.

Laddove la cultura ellenica nei suoi aspetti più importanti scomparve all’avvento della religione cristiana, solo la filosofia greca sopravvisse, anzi trovò nella nuova situazione culturale forme di sviluppo originali. Perciò noi dovremmo parlare di filosofizzazione, piuttosto che di ellenizzazione del cristianesimo. Inizialmente gli autori cristiani erano avversi alla filosofia, ma poi prevalse la linea di Giustino, di Clemente e di Origine secondo cui essa poteva rappresentare una propedeutica a una comprensione colta della fede: certo non tutta la filosofia greca ma soltanto il filone platonico e aristotelico. Da queste specifiche fonti i Padri della Chiesa trassero concetti e argomentazioni utili per due scopi: il primo, la dimostrazione del libero arbitrio a supporto dell’etica, e della provvidenza divina in funzione della teodicea; il secondo, la critica dei miti e culti pagani e delle contemporanee sette eretiche. In particolare la confutazione del manicheismo impiegò su larga scale le strutture formali dell’ontologia aristotelica. La filosofizzazione divenne parte integrante dell’identità e della visione cristiana del mondo.
Whereas all major aspects of the Hellenic civilization faded away at the triumph of the Christian religion, only Greek philosophy remained, and found some original developments inside the new cultural environment. Therefore, we should speak rather of philosophization than of hellenization of Christianity. Many earlier Christian authors were indeed hostile towards philosophy, yet Justin’s, Clement’s and Origen’s line prevailed, saying it could provide a propedeutics to the understanding of faith, although not as a whole but specifically in its Platonic and Aristotelian tradition. The Church Fathers gathered from the repertoire of these sources most notions and topics useful for two aims: firstly, the assumption of the free will supporting ethics, and the demonstration of the divine providence as a pivot for theodicy; secondly, the refutation of pagan idolatry and contemporary heresies. Above all, against the Manicheans they made wide use of the key concepts drawn from the Aristotelian ontology. The philosophization has become an integral part of Christian identity and vision.

The article is intended to present the views of Franciszek Bossowski on the impact of Christianity on Roman law and thus draws attention to the existing output of the Polish science of Roman law in this area. This Vilnius-based Roman law scholar was one of the few researchers in Poland who studied this issue in the interwar Poland. For this reason, the article encompasses an analysis of those of his works in which he touches upon the issue of the impact of Christianity on Roman law. Attention is drawn to the key theses formulated therein as well as his polemics with other scholars. Last but not least, the research postulates formulated by Bossowski are discussed.
Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie poglądów Franciszka Bossowskiego na kwestię wpływu chrześcijaństwa na prawo rzymskie i tym samym zwrócenie uwagi na dotychczasowe osiągnięcia polskiej romanistyki w tym zakresie. Ten wileński romanista, był jednym z niewielu uczonych, którzy w Polsce międzywojennej zajęli się tą tematyką. Stąd też w artykule analizie poddane zostały te prace naukowe, w których uczony odnosi się do wpływu chrześcijaństwa na prawo rzymskie. Zwrócono uwagę na główne tezy pojawiające się w nich, jak i jego polemiki z innymi uczonymi. Wskazano także na postulaty badawcze sformułowane przez romanistę.

L’articolo presenta brevemente alcuni probierni fondamentali legati alle lettere cattoliche nelFantichitó cristiana. In primo luogo da un breve sguardo sulla presenza delle lettere negli antichi elenchi dei libri canonici e nelle opere dei primi autori del periodo patristico. Osserva che prioprio le lettere cattoliche appartengono ai libri piu discussi sotto questo aspetto (cinque libri di questo gruppo appartengono ai libri deuterocanonici del Nuovo Testamento). In seguito si va vedere l’ordine delle lettere nel gruppo e il posto che esse occupano negli antichi elenchi dei libri canonici come anche cerca di spiegare l’origine e il signifiato della denominazione „lettere cattoliche”. La seconda e principale parte del articolo raccoglie principali commenti antichi alle lettere: Hypotyposes di Clemente Alessandrino, Enarratio di Didimo, Catene, In epistulam Iohannis di Agostino, Complexiones di Cassiodoro, anonimo Commentarius in epistolas catholicas, Expositio di Ilario di Arles, frammenti delle opere di Gregorio Magno raccolte da Peterio, Expositio di Beda, e infine Commentario di Isho’dad di Merv. Alla fine vengono offerte alcune conclusioni generali.

Christianity, and the Christian faith, seems to be losing when confronted with scientific reason and scientific certainty. Christianity needs new arguments for the epistemological seriousness of its faith. Those could be found in Joseph Ratzinger’s writings, providing new insights into fundamental theology. The subject of faith as an element that is crucial to him (and to Christianity) pervades all his works. This paper aims at proving that Ratzinger has worked out an original epistemological way of defending the Christian faith. It is an attempt to recreate his argument on the basis of his entire intellectual output. The present research leads to the conclusion that Ratzinger’s way of argumentation is quite unique. In classical fundamental theology, the Christian faith (comprehended mostly as an individual act of faith) is placed at its end point, while in Ratzinger’s fundamental theology, faith (understood mostly as a historical and communal act) is practically a point of departure. From the beginning of his reasoning Ratzinger (due to his meta-faith perspective) persuades that the Christian faith is epistemologically very serious. Faith may not only manifest its presence alongside other serious attitudes to reality, but also be capable of demonstrating its foundation, rationality, originality, uniqueness, and even absoluteness (definitiveness).
