Opis:
A tattoo is the oldest form of visual individualization, occurring since the dawn of history. Initially, tattoos had protective and ritualistic functions. They differed in respect of social status and religious affi liation. People believed in their curative and magical power. There have been different tattoo techniques depending on the geographic location, material and tools, time, civilization development and tradition. Today’s tattoos are mainly used to decorate the body, but still some people have tattoos done as they are willing to emphasize their belonging to the social group, to commemorate important life events or they are guided by other personal motivations.

Opis:
The creation of a small scapular was the result of the process of forming brotherhoods and third orders. As a consequence, lay people have been able to wear a scapular as an outward sign referring to religious clothing, which became a symbol of the garment of salvation and divine protection. A small scapular consists of two square or rectangular pieces of woollen cloth (other forms are not allowed). One piece of the scapular should, hung on the back, the other should fall on the chest, they should be joined by ribbons in such a way that you can put them on over your head. The Catholic Church adopted 23 types of small scapulars and scapular medals worn by the lay faithful.

Opis:
Ende der 70er Jahre besaß die Bibliothek der Katholischen Universität Lublin in ihren Sammlungen 131 Inkunabeln. Sie wurden von Maria Kunowska (die Publikation in ABMK, Bd. 36, 1978) bearbeitet. Zur Zeit (1999) besitzt die Bibliothek 137 Inkunabeln. Sie stammen aus verschiedenen europäischen Druckereien und Buchbinderwerkstätten. Von ihnen wurde eine Gruppe von 29 in Venedig gedruckten Inkunabeln ausgesondert. Der in den 90er Jahren gemachte Versuch einer genauen Datierung einzelner Einbände und der Bestimmung ihres Entstehungsortes brachte interessante Beobachtungen über die Entwicklung des mittelalterlichen Einbandes vom Anfang des 16. Jhs. Es ist sichtbar geworden, dass Krakau zum Zentrum der Buchbinderei geworden war, zu welchem die Zentren von Südpolen, Schlesien und sogar von Böhmen hinneigten, wobei eine gemeinsame Quelle dieser Invention zweifellos Italien war. Eine eingehende Analyse der einzelnen Einbände hat gezeigt, dass Buchbinderwerkstätten ein breites Spektrum eigener Methoden und technischer Lösungen verwendeten. Die Buchbinder waren jedoch nicht nur Handwerker: sie verwendeten ( oft erfinderische) Prinzipien der Verzierungskomposition und waren an künstlerischen und Stilproblemen interessiert. Die Art der Verzierungen konnte für die gegebene Bibliothek oder Werkstatt einheitlich sein; es gibt aber auch viele Beispiele eines freien Schaffens. In der Verzierung der Bucheinbände finden natürlich die allgemein herrschenden Stiltendenzen sowie die sich absondernden nationalen Stile ihren spezifischen Ausdruck. Die Technik der Einbände änderte sich in kleinen Werkstätten oder in Zentren, wo der Hang zu einer Art der Einbände festverwurzelt war, über Jahrzehnte lang nicht, die Ornamentik dagegen veränderte sich mit der Mode und nach aktuellen Tendenzen in der Architektur, Skulptur, Malerei, im Handwerk, in Kleidungs- und Schmuckstilen. Ähnliche ( oder geradezu gleiche) dekorative Elemente finden wir sowohl auf den Stoffen als auch auf den Bucheinbänden. Zum Beispiel die Malerei von der Wende des 15. zum 16. Jahrhundert liefert viele Beispiele für die Verwendung des Musters des stilisierten Granatapfels auf den Tracliten der Zeitgenossen. auch die Einbände aus dieser Zeit verwenden oft das Motiv. Die so durchgeführte Vergleichsanalyse schuf einen Grund dazu, die untersuchten Bucheinbände einer bestimmten geschichtlichen Epoche zuzuschreiben und ihren wahrscheinlichen Entstehungsort zu bestimmen.

In 1947 a bookbinding workshop was established on the initiative of the Rector of KUL, Rev. Prof. Antoni Słomkowski. The workshop was located in a small room in the west wing of the University (Aleje Racławickie), next to the academic church. This place was created as there was a need for taking care of the collections belonging to the university library. The books had hitherto not been properly preserved and if the bookbinding service was required, it was provided by private workshops. The first bookbinders were Bolesława Wisińska and Sister Róża from the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Face. In 1950 the bookbinding workshop was transferred to the building of the Central Library (27 Chopina Street), where it is still located now. Over a period of 70 years, the workshop employed 39 people, including six sisters from the Congregation, six graduates of the Art Department at Maria Curie Skłodowska University and 2 people with the degree in Art History at the Catholic University of Lublin. The job of a bookbinder is a specific one, as it combines both physical and mental labour. It is primarily individual work. A bookbinder should be familiar with the structure of a book, a selection of paper products, bookbinding materials, tools, equipment and machines. He should also be able to operate these devices. A bookbinder’s task is to create a usable form of the printed sheets of paper and to professionally prepare them for bookbinding.
W 1947 r. z inicjatywy Rektora KUL ks. prof. dra Antoniego Słomkowskiego została utworzona pracownia introligatorska. Na pracownię przeznaczono niewielkie pomieszczenie w skrzydle zachodnim gmachu Uniwersytetu przy Alejach Racławickich, obok kościoła akademickiego. Zorganizowanie jej było wynikiem potrzeby zadbania o własne zbiory biblioteczne, które dotychczas zabezpieczano w niewielkim stopniu, korzystając z usług prywatnych introligatorów. Pierwszymi introligatorkami były Bolesława Wisińska i s. Róża ze Zgromadzenia Sióstr Przenajświętszego Oblicza. W 1950 r. introligatornia została przeniesiona do budynku Biblioteki Głównej przy ul. Chopina 27, gdzie funkcjonuje do dzisiaj. W ciągu 70 lat działalności Introligatorni zatrudnionych było 39 osób, między innymi pracowało: 6 sióstr ze Zgromadzenia, 6 absolwentów Wydziału Artystycznego UMCS i 2 osoby po historii sztuki KUL. Praca introligatora jest pracą bardzo specyficzną, zarówno fizyczną jak i umysłową. Jest przede wszystkim zajęciem o charakterze indywidualnym. Introligator powinien posiadać wiedzę na temat budowy książki, znać się na wytworach papierniczych, materiałach introligatorskich oraz narzędziach, urządzeniach i maszynach introligatorskich i mieć umiejętności ich obsługiwania. Zadaniem introligatora jest nadawanie formy użytkowej zadrukowanym kartkom papieru i ich profesjonalnym przygotowaniu do oprawy.

Opis:
Ochweśnik, also called obraźnik, did paintings, especially religious ones and then sold them going door to door. These works were generally made on paper by woodcut prints. This profession developed especially in the first half of the 19th century in Wielkopolska in Skulsk and Ślesin as well as their surroundings. The discussed traders formed a very hermetic and specific environment with their own jargon: a mixture of Polish, Czech, Russian, Yiddish and German. The itinerant trade of devotional images was conducted in all Polish lands, and it even spread beyond the borders, especially to the East. In addition to paintings, they also sold "medicine".

Opis:
One of the many representations of the Virgin Mary in the Carmelite art is Our Lady of the Scapular. It is a specific artistic image connected with the liturgy of the altar, which is also the centre around which the life of the brotherhood revolves. The cult of Our Lady of the Scapular, promoted by the Carmelites, is one of the oldest forms of Marian devotion. Over the centuries, it has achieved great popularity in all social circles. The images of Our Lady of the Scapular are represented in either Mary’s bust or her entire figure, sitting or standing, usually with the Child in her arms or on her lap, holding a sceptre in one hand, in the second a scapular or a scapular in both hands; sometimes Infant Jesus holds a scapular. Scapular images also alluded to the Immaculate Conception. If the attribute of the scapular was not painted originally, it was added later or two pieces of cloth were attached to the image (sculptures). When miraculous paintings were covered with a silver or gold dress, scapulars also appeared on a flap piece of metal. The accepted representations of Our Lady of the Scapular were used as ornaments for feretra and banners connected with brotherhoods’ celebrations. Similar images can be found in books, icons and sculptures devoted to the practice of the brotherhood of the scapular.

The Book of Kells (lat. Codex Cenannensis, Irish: Leabhar Cheanannais), also known as the Gospels of Kells or the Gospels of St. Columba - a manuscript believed to have been created c. 800, richly illuminated by Celtic monks from the monastery on the island of Iona. The manuscript is considered to be one of the most valuable and important monuments of Irish Christianity and works of Gaelic art, which survived to our times. Its fame rests mainly on glamor and artistry decorations that have no equal. Great compositions filling entire pages, craftsmanship decorations and ornamentation of initials used to highlight the text, make The Book of Kells a unique and unrepeatable work of art. Since the mid-seventeenth century The Book of Kells is permanently stored in the Library of Trinity College Dublin (signature MS 58). In 2011 it has been inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

Für die heutige Zivilisation ist es Pfl icht und Sorge, sich um die möglichst lange Erhaltung der intellektuellen Errungenschaften des Menschen zu kümmern. Unmittelbar wird diese Aufgabe von den Archivaren und Bibliothekaren realisiert. Zum Schutz von Büchersammlungen gehört ein ganzes Ensemble verschiedener und komplizierter Aktivitäten, die deren Sicherheit und einen guten Erhaltungszustand gewährleisten sollen. Die schnelle technologische Entwicklung bringt ständig neue Möglichkeiten und gleichzig auch größere Erwartungen und Anforderungen von Seiten der Benutzer mit sich. Das sich insbesondere gegen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts vertiefende Bewusstsein des möglichen Verlustes Hunderttausender auf Papier gebannter Dokumente führte zu einer beschleunigten Suche nach besseren und effektiveren Methoden ihrer Rettung. Diese Suche verlief in zweierlei Richtungen: einerseits zur Entwicklung von Methoden massenhafter Konservierung und andererseits zur Nutzung der sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Technologie der Kopiergeräte. Dieser Gedanke bildete die Grundlage des von der UNESCO initiierten internationalen Programms „Memory of the World”. In Polen hat der Ministerrat der Republik Polen auf das Problem der Rettung des Nationalerbes aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert mit dem Beschluss vom 17. November 1999 hervorragend reagiert und ein Langfristiges Regierungsprogramm für die Jahre 2000-2008 „Saures Papier. Zur massenhaften Rettung der bedrohten polnischen Bibliotheks- und Archivbestände” verabschiedet. Um diese Bestände zu schützen, ist nicht nur ein entsprechendes Bewusstsein der Bibliotheksmitarbeiter notwendig, sondern auch die positive Einstellung der entsprechenden wissenschaftlichen Forschungseinrichtungen und Regierungsstellen sowie die Überzeugung, dass der Schutz dieser Bestände von ganz wesentlicher Bedeutung für die Entwicklung der Wissenschaft, der Technik und der Kultur ist und dass ohne die notwendigen Zuwendungen zu diesem Zweck viele Bestände unwiederbringlich verlorengehen.

The history of a fan – an object that could be seen as exquisite (or even superfluous) – is extremely rich and interesting from the point of view of customs, history and art history. It is amazing how this small object of everyday use, currently considered to be women’s fashion utensils, has had multiple and important functions for millennia. Since the earliest times, fans have been used for cooling, stripping insects, sun protection or setting fire. In ancient Egypt the fans were used by pharaohs and priests as attributes of power and grandeur. Until the 1950s, two fans (flabella) were used in the Western Church as an honorary distinction in processions during which the Pope was carried on shoulders on the gestatorial chair (sedia gestatoria). In the liturgy of the Eastern Church the use of fans (ripidia) has survived to our times, although their significance has already become entirely symbolic. Battle fans come from the Far East, where they served primarily as a sign of officer rank, but also as a weapon. They were used from the 6th to the 16th century, when they reached the peak of popularity. The fans arrived in Europe along with expeditions to the Far East. The golden times of fans came in the 17th and 18th centuries. They ruled in upper-class salons and royal courts throughout Europe. They have become a symbol of prosperity, refinement and coquetry regardless of the time of year. The fan has become the attribute of a lady. Folding fans have gained the most popularity. The fans were made of wood, precious metals, ivory, tortoiseshell, leather, parchment, silk, linen, paper, feathers, and also leaves. They were carved, painted, embroidered and decorated with jewels. They took different forms depending on the application and needs. They were small and large, straight, folded, pleated, round, semicircular, in the shape of a leaf or a streamer, on a long or short handle.
Historia wachlarza, wydawałoby się przedmiotu zbytkownego (a nawet zbędnego), jest niezwykle bogata i ciekawa z punktu widzenia obyczajów, historii i historii sztuki. To zdumiewające, jak ta niewielka rzecz codziennego użytku, współcześnie zaliczana do utensyliów mody kobiecej, przez tysiąclecia pełniła wielorakie i ważne funkcje. Od najdawniejszych czasów wachlarze były używane do ochłody, odpędzania owadów, ochrony przed słońcem czy do rozniecania ognia. W starożytnym Egipcie wachlarze paradne używane były przez faraonów i kapłanów jako atrybuty władzy i dostojeństwa. Do lat 50. XX wieku w Kościele Zachodnim były używane dwa wachlarze (flabella) jako wyróżnienie honorowe w procesjach, podczas których niesiono papieża na sedia gestatoria. W liturgii Kościoła Wschodniego do naszych czasów przetrwało używanie wachlarzy (ripidia), chociaż ich znaczenie stało się już zupełnie symboliczne. Znane są także wachlarze bojowe. Wywodzą się z Dalekiego Wschodu, gdzie służyły przede wszystkim jako oznaka rangi oficerskiej, ale także jako broń. Używane były od VI do XVI wieku, kiedy to osiągnęły szczyt popularności. Wachlarze do Europy przybyły wraz z wyprawami na Daleki Wschód. W XVII i XVIII wieku nastały złote czasy wachlarzy. Królowały w salonach wyższych sfer i na dworach królewskich całej Europy. Były symbolem dostatku, wykwintności i kokieterii bez względu na porę roku. Wachlarz stał się atrybutem damy. Największą popularność zyskały wachlarze składane. Wachlarze wykonywane były z drewna, metali szlachetnych, kości słoniowej, szylkretu, skóry, pergaminu, jedwabiu, płótna, papieru, piór, także z liści; były rzeźbione, malowane, haftowane i ozdabiane klejnotami. Przybierały różne formy w zależności od zastosowania i potrzeb, były małe i duże, proste, składane, plisowane, okrągłe, półkoliste, w kształcie liścia, chorągiewki, na długim lub krótkim uchwycie.

Opis:
Throughout centuries a number of crosses appeared. They had different forms, meanings and symbolism. In prehistoric times, a cross was an amulet, it protected against evil powers, but it also symbolized deities. Crosses were usually connected with the cult of nature forces, particularly fire, the sun and life. Crosses were worn, tattooed, drawn and painted on rocks; they were made of various materials: stone wood and metal. Before a cross became a symbol of Christianity, it had been identified with an instrument of torture, as the worst of all. After the death of Christ, a cross became one of the most important symbols of Christianity. A cross as a sign of salvation is also an attribute of numerous saints, whose lives were connected in a special way with it. In addition to the forms of a cross associated with religions, a number of non-religious variations exist. It is the common custom to award people ‘crosses’ for outstanding services stemming from patriotism, scientific and social achievements. In a time of pop culture, a cross also appeared in the compositions of infographics, and even company logos.
W ciągu wieków pojawiało się wiele rodzajów krzyży. Posiadały one różne formy, znaczenie i symbolikę. W czasach prehistorycznych krzyż był amuletem, chronił przed złymi mocami, ale też symbolizował bóstwa. Krzyże były związane zazwyczaj z formą kultu sił przyrody, a w szczególności ognia, słońca oraz życia. Krzyże były noszone i tatuowane, rysowane i malowane na skałach, wyrabiano je z różnych materiałów, stawiano krzyże kamienne i drewniane, a także metalowe. Zanim krzyż stal się symbolem dla chrześcijan, był utożsamiany z narzędziem tortur, najgorszym z narzędzi męki. Wraz ze śmiercią Chrystusa, krzyż stał się jednym z najważniejszych symboli chrześcijaństwa. Krzyż jako znak zbawienia jest także atrybutem wielu świętych, których życie w szczególny sposób było z nim powiązane. Oprócz form krzyża związanego z religiami powstało wiele jego odmian pozareligijnych. Powszechny jest zwyczaj nadawanych obywatelom „krzyży” za wybitne zasługi będące wyrazem patriotyzmu, osiągnięć naukowych i społecznych. W czasach popkultury krzyż pojawił się także w kompozycjach infografiki, a nawet znaków firmowych.
