Opis:
Having opened the first formative and educative institutions in Galicia, Salesians were supported by the Lvov archbishops, Józef Bilczewski and Boleslaw Twardowski, their benefactors and friends. Salesians opened two religious homes in Lvov in 1934 and 1936. In like manner they met the local social need. Their twelve-year activity in Lvov (1934-1946) concentrated on the formative work, which targeted at as many young people as possible. The Abrahamowicz Family Formative Institute as well as the Male Private Salesian Secondary School formed and educated boys. The Ostra Brama (Eastern Gate) church at Łyczaków, being a votive church for the liberation of Lvov, became a significant centre of religious and patriotic life in the interwar period. The school of crafts and dormitory - the ,,Living Statue" in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the defence of Lvov, the main formative work - were still under organization. Despite that fact, the accompanying work of propaganda triggered authentic enthusiasm and commitment among the community of Lvov. The outbreak of the Second World War, the period of Soviet and Nazi occupation, and the changed geopolitical situations of the eastern territories breached the activity of Salesians in Lvov. They failed to regain the Abrahamowicz Institute, which was taken in 1939. The Our Lady Church in Ostra Brama was closed in 1946 and designed for lay purposes. Last Salesians, together with some Polish parishioners repatriates, were forced to leave Lvov. Over the last decade there have been attempts on the part of the local Catholics to regain the Ostra Brama church, but they failed. Eventually, after successful endeavours the Salesians of the Byzantine-Ukrainian rite took over the church. They opened a pastoral care centre there. In the future, perhaps, they will open a formative and educative institution for young people, an institution they planned to open before the war.
