    Exodus is seen as a foundation of ancient Israel’s identity. The biblical account of this tradition is however fairly late and the events described there are confirmed neither in ancient historiography nor in contemporary archeology. For that reason many researchers question the historic aspect of biblical Exodus. The article presents the current stage of the discussion on the topic.

    Teaching early Christianity in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa since 2002, has convinced this author how important it is for African Christians to know of the deep roots of Christianity in Africa, and recognize the important early African theologians, Tertullian, Origen, Athanasius and Augustine, just to name a few. This argument has a significant precedent among 19th century African Christians encouraged by the unbroken presence of Christianity from antiquity in Ethiopia. In the US, Thomas Oden promoted the study of pre-Islamic Christian Africa through the Centre for Early African Christianity, and publications like the series, Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. This Centre has also encouraged universities in Africa to get involved in deciphering archeological materials and documents from North African sites as evidence for Christianity from its earliest days; the study of such documents has recently been established at the University of Jos (Plateau State, Nigeria). These initiatives are doubly significant because Christianity is growing phenomenally throughout Africa and is often accused of being “mile wide and an inch deep”.

    Si tratta di cosi dette mangiatoie di pietra, conservate nelle due case tardo antiche di Cirenaica (oggi Libia): casa di Paulos a Tolemaide (6 esemplari) e in una casa anonima (9 esemplari) presso la Basilica Centrale a Cirene. La piu problematica sarebbe la funzione originaria di questi blocchi rettangolari di pietra ricavati dentro e messi in linea, perche gli studi precedenti di molti monumenti simili dell'Africa del Nord (oggi Tunisia e Algeria) non danno la risposta definitiva a questa domanda: se si tratterebbe delle vere mangiatoie per i cavalli oppure dei recipienti per l’annona in natura oppure, nei casi di ambienti cristiani eon le „mangiatoie”, dei recipienti per le offerte di terra dalia parte dei fedeli o per i doni a loro dalla parte della chiesa ai fedeli furono le vere stalle. Le installazioni di Cirenaica, insieme eon le „mangiatoie” del Santuario d’Asclepio di El Bayda, non sono ancora conosciute ne pubblicate, sicuramente non hanno servito ai cavalli. L’ultimo caso sembra il piu chiaro, ed e molto probabile che nelle „mangiatoie” del luogo deponevano le loro offerte portate al dio della Salute dai malati visitatori del santuario. Si puó chiedere se la vicinanza stretta delle chiese, sia a Tolemaide, sia a Cirene, non potrebbe indicare la funzione simile delle „mangiatoie” in queste citta antiche. Purtroppo le fonti scritte cristiane a ąuesto proposito ne taccino oppure non sono ancora scoperte e studiate.

    In the course of centuries the Early Christian sanctuaries of the martyrs either continued their purpose and remained the sacred destinations or fell into ruin and became forgotten. There was not much interest in the study of them, at least until the XVIth century, the Counter-Reformation period, when the evidence of sources was used as a weapon to defeat the opponents of the cult of the saints. Ipso facto the study has become only a devotional enterprise. Religiously oriented investigations of Early Christian sanctuaries became more scientific later, with the development of the Christian archaeology, as it gradually separated from theological studies. The remains of the monuments finally started to be regarded as a precious heritage, which should be carefully excavated, documented and well preserved. With G.B. de Rossi’s work the interest in the subject of Christian archaeology increased. Initiated by him the huge archaeological campaign spread in the latin West and goes on till present day. The recent research challenge is to make the picture of the earliest sanctuaries more clear by removing the confessional additions and trying to face the sources in broader, interdisciplinary context.
