Opis:
The article took up the problem of evil in magic in the teaching of the Church Fathers. The ancient priests were convinced that magic was the work of the devil himself. Even the pagan world believed that every mage must have had his own demon, who was the source of their strength. Thus a mage remains at a constant relationship with the devil on whom he is dependent. It can be even said that magic leads inevitably to the worship of the devil. Those who practice magic or seek advice from fortune-tellers and astrologers, put themselves at the devil’s disposal, since they make their life decisions dependent on the results of divination or star system. The most serious form of enslavement is demonic possession. Few of the Church Fathers links possession with magic practice, whereas all agree that magic seriously weakens confidence in Divine Providence and leads to a spiritual split, which results in simultaneous participation in the Christian practices and the use of magic services.

Opis:
Ponerology is devoted to the study of evil in its different aspects. Indeed, also in the early Church it was created a kind of ponerological symbolism. This short study analyses some of these significant traditionally interpreted symbols. In the Christian symbolism holiness is full of fragrance, however the demons and sins emit a terrible odor. The symbolic value of darkness covers the negative aspects of human ignorance, evil, disbelief, danger and death. The fire represents not only illumination and light, but it has the punitive value. The serpent is first mentioned in connection with the history of the temptation and fall of the humanity. In the Christian tradition the serpent or the „dragon” represents Satan, the malicious enemy. Babylon symbolizes all that is worldly and fell away from God. St. Augustine sees the world in which he lives as a mixture of the city of confusion and the city of heaven (Jerusalem). In the ponerological symbolism appears Amalek. The Fathers equated them with passion or evil. The faithful of Christ always fights against him. In Origen this approach is much more clearly defined in his explicitly spiritualizing reading. The ponerological symbolism of the ancient Christian literature contained a moral or religious lessons or allegories.

Opis:
Sulpicius Severus (c. 360-420) was aware of the enormity of evil that people commit. He kept reminding, that the source of this situation is the sin of the first couple, Adam and Eve. A human being took side of Satan rather than God, and consequently developed all kinds of sins of disorder in a delicate field of human sexuality, various vices, murders and wars. Everyone commits sins, no matter who he is and what he does in life. Sulpicius Severus emphasized the truth that sin means disaster, loss of the most important values of freedom and happiness in God. An important feature in the teaching of Sulpicius Severus is his approach to the pagans and heretics. Both of them are treated by him as those who are under the influence of Satan; pagans – because by worshiping idols they venerate demons, and heretics – because by preaching false doctrines they submit to the spirit of lies, that is the spirit of Satan.

Opis:
In light of the distinction Saint Augustine makes between a committed evil, understood as the result of a mistake in choosing (culpa), and a suffered evil, described as the effect of a just divine judgment (poena) – a distinction he makes in several texts dealing with the origin of evil – I analyze Augustine’s reflections in the Confessions on his relationship with the unnamed women. He calls the relationship a pactum libidinosi amoris, that is, one aimed at satisfying the passions. The negative moral judgment he passes on this stage of his life is expressed with particular poignancy by the word libido/libidinosus, indicating the passions to which man submits at times. Looking back at his affair with the unnamed woman, he considers the evil committed a culpa; hence one has the impression that he wanted to place the moral responsibility of the evil committed upon himself, thus giving greater witness to the goodness of the merciful God who revealed to him gradually the truth concerning the various phases of his spiritual journey and the pain experienced along the way.

The existence of evil in the world is one of the fundamental issues for which humans are still looking for an answer. Hans Urs von Balthasar finds it in the possibility of human freedom. What was supposed to be the greatest gift for humans – to be free, relational, created in the image and likeness of the first relation – becomes a curse for them when they try to overcome a difference that exists between them and the Creator. In this way, humans admits absoluteness to their freedom. In order to decide on the good, they eventually fall into a lie that separates them from God. The drama is turned into tragedy. It solution Balthasar finds in soteriology. God allows humans to have their choices even if they are choices of evil, because He takes responsibility for human actions. When in Jesus Christ, entering the scene of theodrama He shows human the right way to play their role. Simultaneously by the power of the union of two freedoms, He overcomes the formed distance, redeeming humans from evil, in which they fell.

Opis:
The reality of death, from which the human beings cannot escape, is seen mostly as their biggest enemy. This is also claimed in the Hole Bible (1 Kor 15,26). People try to defeat this enemy. But when they do not manage to do this, they try to forget about it, to throw it out of their consciousness. Then, death is treated as an evil, that is dangerous for human beings. Death can also be a real, tangible evil, when a person inflicts death on other people. Then, the treachery of this kind of death is not only evil against other people (abortion, euthanasia) but mostly evil against God, our Lord Creator. So, can we talk about death as a good thing? Yes, death is the highest good for a person, if they do not reject their relation with God as our Creator and will deepen their relation with Christ as our Redeemer in faith. Then, the people may have hope to fulfil their life in the Holy Spirit, for eternal life in God. The longing of this eternal life had been manifesting itself throughout the history of mankind and reached its reality and apogee in the Occurrence of Christ. This is how the Holy Bible and the christian theology show other aspects of death: Although it is still a biological event itself, death is not a physical defeat, but it is the God’s decision understood as “constant ruining of the old, so that it can be the beginning of something new” (J. Ratzinger). That God’s new act is the birth of new Adam, which is shown by the baptism, and in the future will be fulfilled with the Resurrection.

Opis:
The struggle between good and evil is one of the main subjects of the Epistle of Pseudo-Barnabas, which originated between 70 and 130, thus, in the period when apocalyptic literature was flourishing. The latter’s impact on the Epistle is undeniable, and is expressed in the characteristic approach of the present time as the „last days” marked by intense activity of evil forces. Even though the outcome of God’s struggle with Satan has already been decided by the victory of Jesus Christ on the cross, still it is ongoing, and at different levels. For Pseudo- Barnabas, two areas of this confrontation are of utmost importance: the orthodoxy of faith and morality of life. The first issue is treated very broadly (chapters I-XVII), and its essence is to convince the readers of the Letter of the saving exclusivism of Christianity. The author radically opposes Judaism, considering all its laws and institutions in their historical implementation (e.g. sacrifices, fasting, Sabbath, temple, ritual ordinances) as the result of both the incorrect (physical) interpretation of the inspired Scriptures and submission to Satan’s insidious work. The only people of the Covenant are those who have believed in Jesus Christ and were immersed in the water of baptism. The other area of the still ongoing struggle is the heart of a Christian who, at any time, has to choose between the way of life and the way of death (chapters XVIII-XX). The final manifestation of Christ’s victory over evil will happen at His second coming, when He will put an end to the „times of the Wicked” and will bring into His Kingdom all the Christians faithful to His teaching.

Opis:
A human being, says Wojtyla, fulfils himself himself through performing good actions and he destroys both his essence and his existence (becoming, "fieri") through doing evil actions. Therefore it is of utmost importance to cognize what is good and what is evil. Aou whole experience tells us that it is not easy because lying (not telling the truth) is an immanent property of evil: evil lies about itself that is good and it lies about good that it is evil. Having observed this immanent property of evil, we make an attempt to find some forms and sources of evil's lies about good and evil. Finally, following the thought of John Paul II, we point out to a realistic philosophy of being as a basis for effective coping with the problem.
