Opis:
The article consists of three parts covering consecutively the question of treating ancient homilies as historic sources, the economic dimension of hunger and food shortages, and finally, their social dimension. The analyses presented show that hunger and food shortages were quite common phenomena in ancient societies and they were intrinsically woven into the fabric of their everyday lives. In his homilies John Chrysostom encouraged his congregation not only to show their social conscience in the face of starving people, but also to help those in need. Describing lives of the poor, especially those suffering from hunger, the preacher pictured them as morally entitled to receiving help. We should though remember that descriptions of destitution in John Chrysostom’s homilies and sermons were quite often exaggerated and designed to serve preacher’s specific purpose. This is the reason why we should approach their analyses with extreme caution and thoroughness. Nevertheless, the information on the issue of hunger given by Chrysostom is still valuable and useful in discovering the reality of social relationships in his time.

Opis:
A critico-literary, exegetic and theological analysis of Amos 8,11-12 has brought the author to the conclusion, that prophet Amos in his threat has prognosticated God’s punishment which will be caused by the nation itself because of their rejection of the grace allowing them to understand Jahwe’s instruction and to recognize the sense of God’s interference with the history of mankind. The author sees a confirmation of her conclusions in the text of Isa. 6,9-10.

Opis:
During the famous famine of 369 Basil, a renown priest of Caesarea, was not hesitant to take up leadership and to successfully face a severe food shortage, which posed a major threat to the inhabitants of Cappadocia. His friend, Gregory of Nazianzus, was careful to point out that Basil’s involvement in the crisis took up a form of gathering the poor, distribution of food to the needy and, far and foremost, alleviation of spiritual suffering caused by hunger of words. In dealing with the wealthy landowners who used to hide grain in their granaries and with the merchants profiteering from this food shortage all he could do was to rely on his rhetorical persuasiveness. In a few sermons (Homilies 6, 8, 9, and also, probably, 7) he issued an appeal to the rich notables to make their grain available to the poor. The vast range of his arguments involved several issues like, to mention only a few, a dignity of human person, private ownership, proper attitude to wealth as such, importance of traditional system of honors connected with the conception of civic euergetism and pagan philanthropy. Basil was eager to make his audience realize the fact that wealth was not given for pleasure but should be reasonably managed and serve as a tool to help the poor and to diminish the scale of social injustice. He also argued that the care of the poor was deeply rooted in the Christian teaching (commandment of love) and practice (observed especially in the first Christian community) and was the best way to gain eternal reward.

Opis:
Man, as Ambrose teaches, should be constantly aware that he is put to the temptation which is experience inherent in freedom, because without temptation, there is no freedom. Jesus chooses knowingly and willingly, despite temptation, folly and weakness arising from the sign of the Cross (cf. 1Cor 1: 23-25). He takes the side of extreme obedience to the Father, and He does so as a man – with all the consequence of human weakness, fear of dying and suffering. He says no’ to Satan – to be a man with a man – to the very end. After the temptation in the desert devil leaves him, but by the time (cf. Lk 4: 13), and he waits for the next convenient moment to tempt Jesus. Ambrose encourages all those who are involved in fighting against the temptations of Satan, because Jesus Christ has overcome the world and opened the door to eternal life for everyone – through the community. Church – communion is the way of human victory over Satan, the prince of this world.
