Opis:
Resettlement programmes in riverbank areas remain an alternative solution to overcoming the problems of urban flooding, the addressing of which can also lead to reducing slums. Such programmes have many weaknesses, but even so, several countries continue to implement them. This paper will elaborate: 1) an understanding that reductions in flood risk and enhancements to environmental quality along riverbanks can be realised, without the need for resettlement, as a result of co-operation between local communities, governments and businesses; 2) the socio-economic benefits of improving the riverbank environment in Tridi Kampong, Malang City, Indonesia. This study employed qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of quantitative analysis and of interviews and direct observation indicate that collective action by the community has the greatest influence on the construction of that community’s commitment to improving the environment. Environmental improvements have resulted in significant socio-economic benefits by making the kampong a domestic and international tourism destination and drawing increased numbers of visitors to the region.

The objective of this study is to examine the implementation of a combined scheme involving payment environment services (PES) and non-payment environment services (non-PES) in the management of the Cidanau River Basin. This study used exploratory research to analyse the structure and mechanism of PES and non-PES schemes for the governance system. The Cidanau Watershed governance is a pioneer in sustainable integrated water resources management in Indonesia and has persisted until the present time. The governance of the Cidanau Watershed is dynamic, resilient, and evolving in response to various changes in social and ecological systems. A bridging organisation like the Cidanau Watershed Communication Forum (Ind.: Forum Komunikasi DAS Cidanau - FKDC) requires legal standing to be visible and gain the trust of the public, especially when implementing a PES approach like the Cidanau River Basin, where service buyers utilise non-direct payment mechanisms. The challenging aspect of developing a PES scheme is empowering knowledge regarding the importance of soil and water preservation among upstream communities, particularly in developing countries like Indonesia, where upstream communities are predominantly composed of low-income farmers whose livelihoods depend on nature. The non-PES scheme represents the government’s mandatory responsibility, whereas the PES scheme presents public participation in active collaboration through the FKDC as an ad hoc institution. A combination of the non-PES and PES scheme approach can serve as a model and reference for similar river basin governance frameworks. Further research is needed regarding social networks and institutional development of sustainable watershed governance in the Cidanau River Basin.

Unlike many other countries, tropical regions such as Indonesia still lack publications on pedotransfer functions (PTFs), particularly ones dedicated to the predicting of soil bulk density. Soil bulk density affects soil density, porosity, water holding capacity, drainage, and the stock and flux of nutrients in the soil. However, obtaining access to a laboratory is difficult, time-consuming, and costly. Therefore, it is necessary to utilise PTFs to estimate soil bulk density. This study aims to define soil properties related to soil bulk density, develop new PTFs using multiple linear regression (MLR), and evaluate the performance and accuracy of PTFs (new and existing). Seven existing PTFs were applied in this study. For the purposes of evaluation, Pearson’s correlation (r), mean error (ME), root mean square error (RMSE), and modelling efficiency (EF) were used. The study was conducted in five soil types on Bintan Island, Indonesia. Soil depth and organic carbon (SOC) are soil properties potentially relevant for soil bulk density prediction. The ME, RMSE, and EF values were lower for the newly developed PTFs than for existing PTFs. In summary, we concluded that the newly developed PTFs have higher accuracy than existing PTFs derived from literature. The prediction of soil bulk density will be more accurate if PTFs are applied directly in the area that is to be studied.
