Opis:
The results of the investigations of the post and exploitation emissions of the harmful components of the fumes of engines from CI were introduced In the work. Obtained results were subjected to a statistical study according to new computer procedures. Qualitative and quantitative reports were established for the level and kind of emission in reference to the changes of the state of studied engines. The need for detailed analysis ofphenomena changes of state destruction of the examined engines, with a vast number of measuring data, requires the use of specialized methods of statistical concluding. The presented results were submitted to statistical analysis, where the methods OPTIMUM and AVD were used, as well as correlation and regression methods. It gave the possibility of quality and quantity comparison of results of fumes contents from stationary tests and exploitation researches. The results of this research allow a model (mathematical relations) determination of relations between smoking and the quantity of toxic fume components of a high-pressure engine. The performed tests and analyses in his work's researches indicate tothe conclusions: in the engine of self-acting ignition (CI) the emission of carbon oxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and smoking are considerable, especially during start-up and engine warming; along with the decrease of environment temperature, the emission of CO, HC and smoking increase, whilst the quantity of NOx goes down, providing premises confirming the specified regulations of forming dangers on the side of engine fumes emission; the phases of start-up and warming up of the CI engine are characterized by increased fuel usage and increased emission of carbon oxide - CO, giving information and sensitising vehicle users to these harmful for the engine working conditions, the influence of environment temperature on the emission and smoking of fumes during hot start-ups is weaker than during cold start-ups.

Opis:
The article presents future requirements concerning emission of toxic components of exhaust gases valid for Diesel engine passenger cars. Questions connected with fulfilment of these standards were discussed. Chosen structural solutions permitting fulfilment of future requirements concerning emission were presented. In Europe passenger cars equipped with Diesel engines which get the homologation certificate for the first time the emission limit determined by the standard Euro 6 will be binding from year 2014. The relation to the at present binding limit Euro 5 emission of nitric oxides, the sum of hydrocarbons and nitric oxides as well as emission of particulate matter must be reduced. On the European market use could be made of experience gained during exploitation heavy duty vehicles in which decrease in nitric oxides emission is achieve by means of selective catalytic reduction (SCR). A more complex system of emission appraisal is valid in USA and especially in the states where the so called Californian standards were adopted. On the example of Volkswagen 2.0 TDI engine it was shown that in modern constructions of combustion engines there is still a large developmental potential. In this case the development went in the direction of fulfilment of new very requiring standards of emission of toxic components of exhaust gases. Well known in Europe 2.0 TDI engine which in its new version fulfils the most strict emission standards BIN5/LEV II constitutes the structural basis of the drive unit designed for the American market. Under such conditions the firm Volkswagen belongs to the small number of cars producers who for a couple of year have offered with success, passenger cars equipped with Diesel engines.

The results of comparative research of the organie components in the exhaust emissions of the CI engine fuelled with Diesel oil or rape seed methyl esters (RSME) were presented in this paper. The experimental works reported here was carriedout on the turbocharged, four cylinder, water cooled, CI engine, T 370 type (80 kW rated power at 2400 rpm, 400 Nm maximum torque at 1440 rpm, bore/stroke - 110/120 mm, displacement volume - 4560 cm3, compression ratio 17:1). The Signal equipment and AVL eeuipment were used for regulated exhaust emissions measurements and Hewlett Packard chromatograph type HP 5890 H for measurements of organic species emissions. The research was carried out under engine full load at maximum torque speed and at rated power speed. Using special equipment and normalized procedures the chromatographic test samples were collected. The 83 species were identified in HC emissions at these experiments but only the benzene, toluene and acetaldehyde were the components which were detected in substantial guantity. The research results show that the percentage emissions of individual components in total emissions of HC were weakly dependent on the used fuel. However in the case of RSME engine feed the HC emissions were lower than hose of the engine fuelled with Diesel oil and total emissions of their components were lower. Concluding, emissions from RSME combustion are less harmful than emissions of the engine fuelled with Diesel oil.

Opis:
Biogas is among the fuels whose significance in the general energy balance will increase. These results from the fact that it may be produced from various kinds of waste materials, and it is therefore considered a renewable fuel of the second generation. Because of its properties, biogas may be used directly to power spark-ignition engines. Nonetheless, numerous tests are underway involving the possibility of using biogas to power compression-ignition engines. In order to use biogas, whose main combustible component is methane, in compression-ignition engines, it is necessary to use a dual fuel power supply system. With such a system supplying power to the engine, the gas and air mixture in the cylinder is ignited by a small dose of liquid fuel. This paper presents a fragment of the research on the use of biogas with a varying chemical composition for powering compression-ignition engines. The described tests were conducted using a one-cylinder compressionignition engine mounted on an engine test stand. The fuel gas consisted of a mixture of natural gas and carbon dioxide; the share of each individual component was regulated from the station, which controlled the operation of the whole test stand. The developed control system also enabled the adjustment of the operating parameters of the engine test stand and the parameters of the injection of liquid fuel, such as the injection pressure, the timing angle of injection and the size of the dose. The results presented in the paper show the impact of the individual control parameters of the engine on the value of the engine’s torque and the amount of toxic compounds in the exhaust fumes.

This paper presents analysis of conditions of CO2, CO, HC and NOX emissions during engine braking phase invehicles with 1.6 SI engine, based on the results of investigations by Professor Romaniszyn. The analysis aimed to determine the effect of cooling of catalytic converter and engine chamber on emissions of toxins and fuel efficiency in next driving phase. Based on own investigations, the synthesis of fuel consumption under three non-driving conditions of engine operation (i.e. continuous drive, engine braking and drive in neutral) is also presented. Current research centres often carry out extensive investigations of fuel efficiency and emissions of toxic compounds during real use of vehicles. Their results, due to previous assumptions or limitations in the scope of investigations, rarely provide an overall view of the problem. These attempts are typically made in scientific papers and dissertations [1-3]. Selective approach to the problem can be justified by the complexity and varied impact of each phase of engine 's operation on fuel consumption under unsteady heat conditions. Fuel consumption map in speed-acceleration coordinates for vehicle and engine, characteristics of CH emissions, parameters of engine braking phase and temperature characteristics of exhaust gases before catalytic converter are presented in the paper.

The article presents the results of the of the HC emissions composition for the compression ignition - diesel engine fuelled with rapeseed fuel (a mixture of methyl esters of fatty acids - RSME). The investigations were conducted on a turbocharged, four-cylinder compression-ignition engine type T370 (of 80 hW power at 2400 rpm engine speed and maximum torque of 400 Nm at 1440 rpm engine speed, with bore/stroke 110 mm /l20 mm, displacement volume 4560 cm3, compression ratio 17). For the exhaust toxicity investigations the eauipment of Signal and AVL companies was used, and for composition of nonregulated hydrocarbons emissions investigations the Hewlett Packard Company chromatograph type HP-5890II was used. The investigations were conducted under engine full load at maximum torque speed and for engine rotational speed of the rated power. Chromatographic test for emissions were collected using special equipment and special procedures. The article presents the results of chromatographic investigations focusedon: benzene, toluene and acetaldehyde. It was found that the percentage of emission of individual components in the total emissions of HC was independent of the fuel used. However, due to the fact that in the case of rape fuel, emission of unburned HC was smaller and smaller were the absolute amounts of emissions components. Thus, emissions from combustion of rape fuel are less harmful than emissions from the engine fuelled with diesel oil.

The goal of the paper is to focus the problem of emission of toxic compounds e.g. NOx, SOx and CO2 from seagoing ships to environment. The VI Amendment to Marpol Convention concerning prevention against air pollution by seagoing ships brought into practice in May 19th 2005 forced ship owners to use means for reduction of environment harmful substances emission to atmosphere. Considerable reduction of these harmful substances can be use dual fuel diesel engines for ship propulsion. Dual fuel engines are fuelled by natural gas having methane as main component. Leading producers of marine diesel engines introduced into production diesel engines DF (Dual Fuel) type. These engines can be fuelled alternatively with natural gas or with heavy fuel oil and marine diesel oil. Today the propulsion by diesel engines fuelled with natural gas is the most popular on ships carrying natural gas cargo i.e. LNG carriers (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers). Natural gas is freight in liquid form under atmospheric pressure in temperature -163 °C. Due to heat penetration into cargo tanks, the liquefied gas evaporates. Evaporated cargo BOF (Boil Off Gas) is used as a fuel in ship diesel engines. However, dual fuel engines are used on other types of ships not only on LNG carriers. A number of seagoing ships fuelled with natural gas are now under construction. For example container ship 9,000 TEU in Japan shipyard Kawasaki Heavy Industries or container ship 14,000 TEU in Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for company CMA-CGM. Ships fuelled with natural gas e.g. modern ferries are also built by Stocznia Remontowa Shipbuilding in Poland for Norwegian owner. Adaptation of presently operated ships for fuelling with natural gas is also considered.

Opis:
Electric vehicles are increasingly present on the roads of the whole world. They have the opinion of ecological vehicles, not polluting the environment. Society is more and more often persuaded to buy electric cars as an environmentally friendly solution but is this for sure? Electric cars need quite a lot of electricity accumulated in batteries to drive on a long range. During the charging process, this energy is obtained from the electricity network, to where it is supplied by power plant. Electricity production from renewable sources is a privilege for the rare. However, electric cars are charged from the electricity grid, which in large part energy comes from non-renewable fuels. The efficiency of energy production in power plants and the energy transmission and conversion chain causes that only part of the energy produced in this way goes to the vehicle’s wheels. Although the power plants are equipped with more and more efficient exhaust gas cleaning systems, they do not clean them up to 100%. Sulphur, nitrogen, mercury and heavy metals remain in the exhaust. The article is an attempt to answer the question whether the total emission of toxic components associated with the use of an electric vehicle is not bigger than in a traditional internal combustion engine.

Presented paper shows results of laboratory tests on the relationship between the throttling of a cross area of an air intake duct and the composition of exhaust gas from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory four-stroke diesel engine, worked with a load from 50kW to 250kW at a constant speed. During the laboratory, tests over 50 parameters were measured of the engine with technical condition recognized as a “working properly” and with a simulated the air intake duct throttling. The simulation consisted of inserting the throttling flanges to the air intake duct before compressor, limiting duct cross-sectional area by 20% and 60% respectively. The results of laboratory research confirm that the effect of the air intake duct throttling on the engine thermodynamic parameters is clearly visible only at considerable throttling. In the case of measuring the composition of exhaust gas, both mole fractions and emissions of gaseous components markedly affected even at low throttling. For example, 20% throttling of the cross section of the air intake duct increase the mole fraction of carbon monoxide in exhaust gas almost 44% during working the engine with load equal to 250kW, and only 10% of the temperature after air cooler. Keep in mind that the temperature after air cooler was an engine parameter, which undergoes the greatest change during the simulation of that malfunction. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of the air delivery to the engine system.

One of the important design parameters for internal combustion engines is the geometric compression ratio epsilon. It is defined by the ratio of the maximum volume of the combustion chamber Vmax at the bottom dead centre (BDC) piston position and a minimum volume of the combustion chamber Vmin at the top dead centre (TDC) piston position. Conventional engines have this parameter set unchangeable, what is not the solution ensuring optimal benefits coming from the heat release in the combustion process, especially under altering conditions of load and speed in which they perform powering the road vehicles. It is reflected mainly in exhaust emission problem. Despite a considerable progress, further improving the ecological and energetic performances of the piston engines faces severe system limits, elimination of which requires major changes in engine design, including conversion the fixed compression ratio into the flexible one. For such innovative engine designs with so-called variable compression ratio VCR feature the geometric compression ratio parameter is as the one of the operation regulators. Due to the new development prospect the paper scope is an analysis and showing some results for the impact of compression ratio on the emissions of selected exhaust harmful components for a direct injection diesel engine. The schematics and prototype solutions for VCR technology are briefly presented too.

The test procedure and the test bench were described. Article contains structure of tested catalytic converters with physicochemical investigations of their active surface. The reactors surfaces views from scanning electron microscope (SEM) and x-ray surface structure investigations were also included. Comparison of tested catalytic converters properties were made in function of their temperature. Analyses were related to rector's ability to convert carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, sum of nitric oxides, nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. Results of investigations have shown that platinum catalytic converters working in diesel exhaust gases have high efficiency in oxidation of nitrogen monoxide to nitrogen dioxide. This property is mainly used in continuous regeneration trap systems (CRT). Catalytic converters ability to passive reduction of nitric oxides by use of hydrocarbons was demonstrated. Ranges of tested reactors temperature in which their properties that can be used in continuous regeneration trap systems and systems of selective nitric oxides reduction by use of hydrocarbons (HC-SCR) were defined. Mentioned reactors properties were estimated in connection to platinum load on reactors surface.

The article describes the problem of the operation of turbine jet, adaptive engine work on the natural environment. In particular, the analysis of noise generated by turbine jet engines has been made. It points out possible directions of noise decrease with particular emphasis upon structural changes within the engines, the task of which is to reduce the noise mission. The example of the modernization is based upon the “bypass” type of one-flow turbine jet engine. The essay contains theoretical basis of calculation of the noise emission level and the results, which graphically indicate a relative level of noise of this type of engine depending upon the amount of discharged air and the diameter of the discharge nozzle and the radius, upon the basis of which the noise level is determined. This work also includes a comparison of the relative noise level of this type of engine with regard to one-flow turbine engine equipped with the function of air discharge to the environment and with regard to two-flow turbine jet engine equipped with air stream flow mixing device. The use of low-emission combustion chambers in the "bypass" turbine engine was indicated. This allowed addressing the problem of emissions of toxic exhaust components by this type of aircraft engines. At the same time, the dependence of this emission related to the mass of fuel used on the engine's thrust range was indicated. The article was concluded with a short summary.

Opis:
The two-stroke engines have never acquired the popularity of the four-stroke engines due to their inherent performance limitations. The tasks of many engineering teams were to find the basic causes, which resulted in the inferior performance of these engines. Today’s task is to build a two-stroke engine whose performance could match that of a four-stroke engine in areas of common use. The most typical performance problems of a two-stroke engine are high petrol consumption caused by low efficiency, toxic by-products of combustion being emitted into the atmosphere (caused by oil present in the petrol), and uneven and loud engine noise. The greatest challenge is to achieve a good chamber purge during one stroke in which the fresh fuel mixture flows through the piston-controlled inlet port while at the same time the fumes are being exhausted through the outlet port. This in contrast with the four-stroke engines where the intake and exhaust are each done with two separate strokes. From the energy point of view, the two-stroke engine is not efficient because a certain amount of fresh fuel is being wasted in the exhaust fumes. We propose to replace the piston-controlled cam with the valve-flushed system, which will cause the combustion process to become more efficient. The purpose of this paper is to present various designs of the engine heads and analyse their performance. The goal of this proposal is to choose the best combination of these engine heads in order to achieve the optimum overall engine performance.
