This paper presents a model unit demonstrating the possibility of using a PBCHP10VB CHP unit driven by a piston combustion engine fed with gas fuels for heat and power cogeneration. A mobile unit available in the Department enables heat and power cogeneration at any place with available gas fuel, e.g. compressed in a pressure tank or from a production and transmission system. A radiator is connected to the unit’s heat connection for demonstrative purposes – this is the simplest model of a network using the heat generated by the unit, with the possibility of easy connection to another network for heating rooms and/or tap water instead of this radiator. Any three-phase load (e.g. a single phase converter) can be connected to the unit’s power connection. A constructed mobile power generator fed with alternative gas fuels (e.g. biogas) is described which can be used in the field in a biogas system for power generation with simultaneous heat recovery. The results of the first preliminary tests on the effect of the type of gas fuel used on the obtained electrical and thermal power and on the composition of exhaust gas from the driving combustion engine are presented. A plan for further tests is also outlined.

This paper presents the reasons for the development of gas-combined power and heat units and justification for testing the effect of the used gas fuel on the performance of such units. A PBCHP10VB CHP unit driven by a liquidcooled piston combustion engine adapted for feeding with gas fuels is described. The concept is presented for testing the effect of different gas fuel mixtures, including biogas, on this unit’s operation, mainly on the obtained electric power from the current generator and the temperature of the liquid cooling the driving engine heating up output water and on the composition of exhaust gas from this engine. A simple device for obtaining gas fuels containing different combustible gas mixtures is presented. The instruments used to check the composition of the obtained gas fuel and check exhaust gas from the engine are briefly described. The paper describes a test stand for testing the effect of different gas fuels on the operation of a PBCHP10VB gas CHP unit manufactured by Power Blessed Co., Ltd registered in Shanghai, constructed at the Department of Mechatronics and Technical and Information Technology Education of the Faculty of Technical Sciences at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

Increasingly higher demands pnt on piston internal combustion engines arę aimed at reducing their harmful impact on the natural environment. This refers primarily to nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and noise emissions. The reduction in emissions ofnoxious components oj exhaust gases in engines is achieved by means of, among others, the use of catalysts decreasing nitrogen oxide emissions, particulate matter filters and oxidising catalysts decreasing carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Common Rail injection systems make it possible to increase the engine power, and to reduce fuel consumption, exhaust gas toxicity and noise produced by engines. With Common Rail systems, the pattern of fuel injection process can be designed, consequently the combustion process can be controlled. The paper presents the results of test bench investigations into a compression ignition 1.3 Multijet engine with multistage fuel injection, which is manufactured in Poland by Fiat-GM Powertrain Polska Company. The tests were conducted at a stand constructed at the Heat Engines Laboratory ofthe Kielce University of Technology. The scope of investigations included determining economic and energetic parameters of the engine work, and also environmental parameters, such as the concentration of nitrogen oxides NOX, carbon monoxide CO and carbon dioxide CO2 in exhaust gases, and exhaust gas smokiness. In tests, the engine operated under speed conditions and it was fuelled by two commercial diesel oils that had different physical and chemical properties.

The article presents dilatometric research results of composite alloy (in-situ) for combustion engines piston. Researches were performed with a precise dilatometer. Alloy's research test stand and test results including relative elongation, course of derivative of dimension increasing versus time with phase transition and course of coefficient of linear thermal expansion α for composite alloy versus temperature are presented in the article. Novel composite alloy allows getting a minimum difference of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion α during heating and cooling. In particular, the chemical composition of the novel composite silumin alloys; ATD of standard alloy – silumin Ak12 and novel composite alloy; schema of research stand and view of the measuring-head of the extension; course of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion α versus temperature during heating and cooling for the standard alloy and novel composite alloy; course of the relative piston elongation ΔL/Lo versus temperature during heating and cooling for the standard alloy and novel composite alloy; course of the derived function of the extension in relation to time dL/dt versus temperature for the standard alloy on pistons and novel composite alloy; course of the relative elongation in function of time during ageing of composite alloy at the temperature of 200°C with two-stage ageing process; course of the relative elongation in function of time during ageing of composite alloy at the temperature of 200°C for the first stage and second stage are presented in the article.

Novel composite ma hysteresisterials on the pistons are characterised that they occur in them multiple intermetallic phases which crystallize in the high temperature, before crystallization of the alfa+beta (Al+Si) eutectic. For forming of pre-eutectic phases, chromium and molybdenum are introduced to silumins, and for derivation of multiple increased concentration of nickel and copper and decreased concentration of magnesium are accomplished. On the basis of evaluations of mechanical and thermal loads of combustion engines pistons applying essence of composite materials of combustion engines pistons, as well requirements for combustion engines pistons, especially high loaded engines are expressed. Test results of hardness, influence of temperature of casting, test results of mechanical properties, friction coefficient and coefficient of thermal expansion are presented in the paper. The special attention devoted to so called hysteresis coefficient of thermal expansion and hysteresis of the relative elongation in function temperature and time. Courses of coefficient of thermal expansion for standard and composite material are presented. Differences of the a coefficient during heating and cooling in function temperature are relative to kind of heat treatment. Two-stage heat treatment is beneficial for the obtainment small values of the a coefficient.

Increasingly strict standards for exhaust emissions in piston combustion engines force manufacturers and users to seek and apply different means to meet those standards. The effect of the type of fuel on the pattern of engine fast-changing quantities such as the pressure of the working medium in the cylinder, fuel pressure in the injection pipe and the injector needle lift is discussed in the paper. In test bench investigations, the self-ignition engine of AD3.152 UR type operated in the load characteristics regime for the crankshaft rotational speeds 1400 and 2000 rpm and was fuelled by Ekodiesel Ultra D diesel oil (DO), rapeseed oil fatty acid methyl esters FAME and blends of the two fuels, which had 20% and 30% ester content, i.e. B20 and B30. Based on fast-changing quantities diagrams obtained, selected parameters of fuel injection and combustion processes in the engine under consideration were computed. It is shown in the paper that fuel injection and combustion start in the engine fuelled by rapeseed oil fatty acid methyl esters FAME or blends B20 and B30 occur a little earlier than when it is fuelled by diesel oil. When the engine operating in the load characteristics regime is fuelled by FAME or blends with diesel oil, slightly higher values of the maximum pressure in the cylinder and fuel pressure in the injection pipe are obtained. It is demonstrated that in the engine fuelled by FAME or B20 and B30, the injection advance angle should be slightly delayed in comparison with the manufacturer's setting for the engine fuelled by diesel oil.
Wprowadzanie dla tłokowych silników spalinowych coraz bardziej rygorystycznych norm emisji spalin, wymusza na ich producentach i użytkownikach poszukiwanie i stosowanie różnych środków zapewniających spełnienie tych norm. W artykule przedstawiono wypływ rodzaju paliwa na przebiegi wielkości szybkozmiennych silnika takich jak: ciśnienia czynnika roboczego w cylindrze, ciśnienia paliwa w przewodzie wtryskowym i wzniosu iglicy wtryskiwacza. Podczas badań hamownianych silnik o zapłonie samoczynnym typu AD3.152 UR pracował według charakterystyk obciążeniowych przy prędkościach obrotowych wału korbowego 1400 i 2000 obr/min i zasilany był olejem napędowym Ekodiesel Ultra D (ON), estrami metylowymi kwasów tłuszczowych oleju rzepakowego FAME i mieszaninami tych paliw o zawartości estrów 20% i 30%, tj. B20 i B30. Na podstawie wyznaczonych przebiegów wielkości szybkozmiennych obliczono wybrane parametry procesu wtrysku paliwa i procesu spalania w badanym silniku. W pracy wykazano, że wtrysk paliwa i początek spalania, w przypadku zasilania silnika estrami metylowymi oleju rzepakowego FAME i paliwami B20 oraz B30, następował nieznacznie wcześniej niż w przypadku zasilania go olejem napędowym. Zasilając silnik pracujący według charakterystyk obciążeniowych, estrami FAME oraz ich mieszaninami z olejem napędowym, uzyskiwano nieznacznie większe maksymalne wartości ciśnienia w cylindrze oraz ciśnienia paliwa w przewodzie wtryskowym. Wykazano, że przy zasilaniu silnika paliwem FAME oraz paliwami B20 i B30, należy nieznacznie opóźnić kąt wyprzedzenia wtrysku paliwa w stosunku do ustawienia fabrycznego, określonego przy zasilaniu silnika olejem napędowym.

In the task of research and development of internal combustion engines, the strong emphasis is placed on reducing emissions of harmful substances in exhaust gases, which include carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM, PN); while maintaining a high engine performance and, above all, adequate: power, fuel consumption, noise. One of the possibilities to reduce emissions of HC and engine working noise is to reduce the clearance between the piston and the cylinder liner. This is possible only, when the permanent deformations of the piston are reduced, which result from rapid piston temperature changes (thermal shocks). The newly developed composite aluminum alloy is characterized by high strength parameters and low dimensional hysteresis during repeated heating and cooling. The S12-U engine pistons are made of this material, and they had a slightly larger nominal diameter than the standard pistons. They were then mounted in the engine. The engine was tested on a test stand with the modern, accurate measuring equipment. Test results show, that the HC and CO content in the exhaust gas has been reduced, exhaust gas blowby to the crankcase declined, smoke emission was reduced and engine lubricating oil consumption was also reduced. Analysis of test results indicates that this has been achieved, mainly by reducing the clearances between the piston and the cylinder. The article provides detailed test results, mainly in the form of charts, on which one can compare the results, achieved by the engine with new material pistons with results of the same engine, but with the standard pistons.

The article discusses the results of the wear of piston rings for internal combustion engines with self ignition. The research was a prototype multilayer ring sealing of the porous coating and the so-called chromium embankment diamonds [2]. Technology of the rings is the deposition of multilayer coatings in the process of chromium plating. In times of chromium deposited from the bath particles are technical diamond's shape, and granulation. This technology is a response to domestic factory piston rings to the needs of the automotive market and is an innovative development. Conducted engine tests consisted of a 50-hour cycle and to hour break-in team life cycle, which was repeated 150 times. Thus the total duration of sample equal to 200 hours. Cycle life is a team containing a phase-hour cycle engine traffic load at maximum speed and maximum torque and maximum power of the tween partial load and idling. This cycle is repeated in the 200-hour test 150 times. During the measurement of key indicators were measured at the engine, the fuel consumption, coolant temperature and pressure of the lubricating oil. In order to calculate the wear of piston rings, the difference was calculated to measure the thickness and height before and after sample of 200 hours. In a similar way as the use of thickness and height of the rings was calculated by weight loss.

As a part of the research work done on the engine URSUS 4390 which aimed at increasing power while reducing exhaust gas emissions, intake channels in the head, shape of the combustion chamber and compression ratio were modified. Proper injection equipment was selected and atomizer nozzles were constructed. In the first phase of the research, toroidal combustion chamber was located in factory design location. In the article there are presented results of exhaust gas emissions in selected operating points of engine URSUS 4390 for various positions of experimental combustion chamber. An innovative method of changing the position of the combustion chamber related to the piston axis was developed. A rotating insert with eccentrically extruded combustion chamber was mounted in piston axis. Rotation of the insert by a given angle resulted in displacement of combustion chamber around the axis of rotation. For each particular position of combustion chamber, concentration of toxic flue gas components and smoke index was measured at full load with rotational speed of 1400 and 2000 rpm. Proposed piston construction with rotating insert allowed to significantly decreasing duration of the research, which aimed at verification of combustion chamber relative location to injector and inlet nozzle. This way the necessity of construction of new sets of pistons and lapping them each time was avoided. As a result of the work, 11 locations of combustion chamber were tested. The study allowed picking the position of combustion chamber, which guarantees lowest emissions of toxic flue gas components.

Geometry of the slot between piston bearing surface and cylinder bore affects the friction losses of the IC engine to the far extent. It appears that these losses depend more on the area covered with oil than the thickness of oil layer separating collaborating parts. Barrel-shaped or stepwise piston bearing surface is the way to reduce the oil-covered area. The first concept has been used for years while the stepwise profile has not been applied for various reasons, although this idea providing higher load capacity of oil layer in stepwise slot was published in literature in the fifties of twentieth century. The stepwise profile can be obtained covering the cylindrical or tapered piston-bearing surface with a thin layer graphite. This paper presents the results of simulation leading to the reduction in friction losses and abrasive wear of piston bearing surface and cylinder bore. Covering the piston bearing surface with a thin layer of graphite one can get an extremely advantageous tribological properties of the piston assembly which means the expected parameters of oil film and in a case of film rupture – an ignorable abrasive wear of the graphite layer and/or cylinder bore.

Opis:
The principles and possible applications of laser ablation technology in combustion engines pistons were described. Laser ablation removal of carbon deposits and other products of pistons using from pistons bottom was presented. The process of sequence removal of the deposits was controlled, so the pistons were not damaged. Nd: YAG laser with 10 Hz pulse work and wavelength X-- 1064 nm was applied during the process. In the laboratory experiments the deposits were removed from aluminum Akl12 and from ceramics on the basis of zirconium, sputtered on the pistons bottom as a thermal barrier (TBC). The exposition time of laser beam ranging from 10 to 20 ns was applied. Furthermore variation of such important parameters of laser treatment like energy density, beam scanning rate, impulse covering rate was applied, resulting with a set of parameters applicable for lab and even industrial scale. After deposits removal from surface layer, many micro- and macro cracks were noticed. The cracks created a net-like pattern, which was a result of cyclic heat-shock present during 400 hours long endurance test of combustion engine. The laser technique is an alternative for other methods because of its ecological reasons. It is also very precise and can be easily automated. It can be also applied in diagnosis, verification and also as a surface layer pretreatment for such a processes like thermal sputtering, or deposition of composite layers in important areas of pistons.
Opisano istotę oraz możliwości zastosowań technologicznych ablacji laserowej dla tłoków silnika spalinowego. Przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań własnych w zakresie ablacyjnego usuwania nawarstwień, głównie w postaci nagaru na denku tłoka oraz innych osadów będących produktami eksploatacji tłoków. Usuwanie sekwencyjne nawarstwień realizowane było w sposób kontrolowany, dzięki temu nie następowało uszkadzanie podłoża tłoka. Ablacyjne oczyszczanie laserowe realizowane było przy użyciu lasera Nd: YAG o pracy impulsowej 10 Hz oraz długości promieniowania laserowego X = 1064 nm. W eksperymentach laboratoryjnych usuwano ww. nawarstwienia osadzone na podłożu ze stopu aluminium Ak12 oraz ceramiki na bazie cyrkonu, natryskanej na denko tłoka jako bariera termiczna (TBC). Stosując czas ekspozycji wiązki laserowej ok. 10 -20 ns oraz różne parametry obróbki laserowej: gęstość energii, prędkość skanowania wiązki, stopień przykrycia impulsów dobrano właściwe parametry obróbki, które mogą być stosowane nie tylko w warunkach laboratoryjnych, ale również w skali przemysłowej. Po usunięciu nawarstwień w warstwie wierzchniej barierowej powłoki ceramicznej stwierdzono bardzo liczne mikro-i makro-pęknięcia, tworzące regularną siatkę spękań, powstałą w czasie cyklicznych oddziaływań szoków cieplnych w 400 - godzinnej próbie trwałościowej silnika spalinowego o ZS. Opisywana technologia laserowa stanowi alternatywę dla innych metod oczyszczania, głównie ze względów ekologicznych, dużej precyzji oraz szerokich możliwości automatyzacji procesu. The formation of oil film is possible under certain parameters of microgeometry cooperating components the main node of the internal combustion engine, which is a piston-pin-piston rings. In addition, this node is primarily responsible for the formation of mechanical losses. It is advisable to reduce friction losses in the piston-cylinder group lead to an increase in the overall efficiency of the engine and thus reduce the fuel consumption. One way of achieving these objectives is modification of microgeometry of the piston-bearing surface, which cooperates with the cylinder wall. The geometry of the gap between the piston skirt and the cylinder liner greatly affects the friction loss inside the engine. This means that the friction loss is much more affected by the area covered by the oil film separating the mating elements than its thickness. The method to reduce the area covered by the oil film is a modification of the bearing surface of the piston by adjusting the profile. The supporting surface, which performs a reciprocating motion relative to the strokes of the cylinder liner ensure the continuity of the oil film with the smallest possible value of the friction losses at the node piston-cylinder. This paper presents the results of simulation leading which aim to determining the parameters oil film on the friction loss for the modified bearing surface of the piston.

The paper presents the requirements to be met by diesel engines and their components, in particular pistons for engines of military vehicles. These requirements are related to the mass of modern military vehicles, which has greatly increased. Materials for the piston should have a good strength properties and low hysteresis of thermal expansion coefficient α across the range of operating temperatures, good resistance to galling, low abrasion, low coefficient of friction and good functional properties. On the clearance of the piston in the cylinder, the coefficient of thermal expansion α and its hysteresis has a decisive influence. The paper includes information on the piston working clearances, the requirements for pistons materials, their chemical composition, standard materials for the forged pistons, for the cast pistons (silumin alloys) and for the composite pistons. The paper presents the changes in coefficient of thermal expansion for the alloy in the raw state and after heat treatment and pistons made of new composite material prior to motor testing and after these tests. The completed new pistons have a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and lower hysteresis α, which allows reducing the running piston and cylinder clearances with the resulting effects.

The article presents a method of piston temperature measurement on a running engine using electromagnetic induction for transferring measurement results from a moving measuring system placed in a piston to a stationary system attached to the engine crankcase and to measuring system located outside the engine. Selected test results that were carried out on a single-cylinder Diesel engine are presented. A system consisting of a thermistor and a secondary coil was mounted in the piston. The primary coil was mounted in the crankcase under the cylinder liner of the engine. Engine tests were aimed at determining the influence of the piston ring insert on the temperature distribution in the piston. Temperature measurements in the piston without the ring insert were carried out for comparison. In both cases, the pistons had the same geometrical dimensions. The tests were carried out in conditions of external characteristics (the maximum load as a function of engine speed) and load characteristics (load changes at constant engine speed). The test results in the form of the temperature difference between the temperature of piston top and the temperature under the top compression ring indicate that the ring insert is a barrier to the heat flow from the piston to the engine cooling system. In addition, the results of the piston temperature measurements during the step change of the engine speed and its load to the nominal value are presented.
