Opis:
The paper presents the methodology prepared by the author. During the process of acquiring new vehicles for the armed forces, time is of the essence in practice of conducting a wide range of structure changes in previously implemented undercarriages. It has to be pointed out that with a high individuality and the very nature of the units, difficulties in scope of comprehensive testing with regard to matters of transport safety. What is more, two determinants are essential in the process of acquiring equipment - time and cost. The process does not allow for improvement and perfecting of the structure, and the research in scope of wheel vehicle movement safety may be limited. The procedure of implementation and verification of equipment stresses the structure optimization as early as on the designing and prototype preparation stages. The procedure of acquiring new wheel vehicles for the military is one of the main premises for preparing the methodology with use of simulation research. Conducting research on the basis of the prepared methodology allows for avoiding possible traffic risks. The methodology enables an effective support for the current process of wheel vehicle acquisition for the armed forces. In this work the research procedure consisting of the necessary range of prepared, experimentally verified models, accepted by the methodology, have been verified. In order to do that two simulation models have been built, both of various levels of complexity.

Opis:
The article presents the method of analysing the operating process of Star military vehicles in their readiness aspect. The subject of research was the Military Economic Unit, recently created in the Polish Army. Markov processes were applied. A simple 5-state model was built, and the research was made in a discrete, as well as continuous time. The limit probabilities, both for the chain and the time, were estimated. Thanks to Chapman-Kołomogorov-Smoluchowski equations, the long-term projections could be estimated. To ensure of operating processes, correctly object’s permissible transitions from the previous state to the next one were chosen. It was defined based on technical documentation and owned operational knowledge on the considered operating process. The mathematical description of a set of permissible transitions includes a matrix of permissible Si → Sj transitions from the previous state Si (lines) to the next one. The five-state system has possible and forbidden transitions are presented. Graph of permissible transitions for the five-state operation model usage, standby, maintenance, repair, standstill in repair; correlogram for the average duration of the state; evolution of the probability of the Star cars’ staying in the state of usage, standby, maintenance, repair, standstill in repair are presented in the article.

Opis:
The situations which our forces faced during various stabilization military missions showed that light armored vehicles are not secure enough in the case of the mine or improvised explosive devices explosion. Nowadays, the primary way of protection against this type of threat is application of a V-shape bottom in the vehicle. Such a configuration of the bottom allows dissipation of explosion energy whereby the impulse, which is transmitted to the construction – the vehicle bottom or frame, has a much lower value than in the case where the bottom is flat. In the literature it is possible to find the results of model tests on an experimental laboratory test stand. These studies show that the value of the impulse which is transmitted to the structure depends on the shape of the deflector, actually on its angle. Assuming the above condition, there were performed numerical analyses of the values of the impulse transmitted to the construction for deflectors with different angles and for a variety of loads masses. The aim of the numerical analyses was to find the optimal angle of the deflector for the considered situation. In this model, the optimal value of the angle is that in which the considered value of the impulse transmitted to the construction reaches the minimum value. For this purpose, there was made a finite element model of deflector corresponding to the conditions of the experiment. The shell elements were used in this model. The model was loaded with a pressure impulse derived from the detonation of an explosive. The blast wave interaction with the structure was modeled using the fluid structure interaction. The numerical analyses were based on the finite element method with the explicit time integration method implemented in the LS-DYNA program.

RUN FLAT tires
composite wheel
Opis:
One of the most essential threats to the mobility of wheeled vehicles is their relatively high sensitivity to tire damage. Tires can be damaged as a result at vehicle-targeting fire, after running on a mine or an improvised charge. The purpose of the article is to analyze the current technical solutions in wheeled vehicle tires, allowing for the unobstructed use of the vehicle despite the damage of one or several tires (RUN FLAT systems). Since RUN FLAT systems have become increasingly popular in passenger cars as well, the article contains partial references to civilian solutions. One should remember that RUN FLAT systems are not only to guarantee vehicle mobility following the loss of pressure in the tire in straight-line motion, but also crew safety providing sufficient driving level and stability at longer distances. The article presents solutions of this type, applied not only in military vehicles, but also considers research-structural works implemented by ROSOMAK S.A. in cooperation with other centres. The works presented in this article were financed by ROSOMAK S.A. and National Research and Development Centre (NCBiR) (project SPB – RolRes, agreement no PBS1/A6/1/2012).

The article presents the results of comparative tests of the experimental designs of the braking system of high mobility vehicles. Braking systems determine the safety of vehicles. Higher mobility requirements should not remain without an effect on adapting the braking system to the use conditions. Article developed within the scope of execution of the NCBiR project DOBR-BIO4/021/13355/2013. The mileage tests lead to a thorough evaluation of the various systems of the vehicle. In order to carry out the mileage test correctly, the vehicle has to be exposed to the most difficult conditions to which it is adapted to, according to the preliminary assumptions. In the case of military vehicles, the most difficult terrain is the training ground terrain with frequent bumps, uphill’s, downhill’s and water hazards, etc. The vehicle has to be operated at the maximum use of all its components (inter-wheel and inter-axle locks etc.). Only the vehicle that has been properly tested, and meets all the assumptions for a given object can be considered safe.

Opis:
Because of much more restricted norms about polluting gas emission in modern vehicles, there is a need to make better control of fuel combustion. The process of fuel combustion is controlled by electronic control unit (ECU). The unit is analysing signals from many sensors, and when the control unit is not able to correct mistakes in fuel combustion, it turn on a warning indicator light and alarming a driver that the emission of polluting gas is too high. The problem is, that the hole system is undependable. The level of complicated of the system is high. In military vehicles, suddenly lost of power of an engine, because of some little mistake in emission control system, in combat conditions could be very danger. Off course, some armoured vehicles has special program in ECU, but most of the military vehicles are built on civilian vehicles, without any changes. The paper show potentials danger in modern electronics controls units of engines. The authors has also practice not only in vehicles testing and service, but also in preparing sport vehicles for rally. The sports programs for ECU in rally vehicles, allows for example for drive with the full power of the engine, even if the temperature of the cooling system is very high, and in normal vehicles, the ECU would not allow to work in such a condition.

Opis:
This paper presents the most vital parts of technical tests of military vehicles in relation to environmental protection. The presented method is based on the most popular military off-road truck of the Star 1466 type. It includes a diagram showing the parts of the test of this vehicle from the perspective of environmental protection whose sequence is not imposed. What is solely required is that all these parts are executed - in accordance with the applicable provisions. For this purpose, the paper presents the methodology (whose major parts are described) of testing the vehicle complying with the requirements of environmental protection. Furthermore, it outlines the process of checking leakages of exploitation fluids, smoke opacity, measurement of external noise of this vehicle and the measurement of the level of an acoustic signal. The description of particular checks is based on the applicable provisions and regulations, as well as on typical and commonly available measuring instruments. It is stressed how important it is to maintain and follow the technical parameters - concerning the systems (units) responsible for polluting the environment - which are required by particular provisions and regulations. In the conclusions, the most crucial documents governing the organization of stations used for testing military vehicles, as well as methods and necessary equipment, have been presented.

Opis:
A deep modernization of equipment due to its assembling to the modern requirements of a battlefield and getting full compatibility to NATO structures caused that some military vehicles equipment with additional staff lose their buoyancy or are at the edge of losing it. The solution to this problem can be setting an additional device which helps to increase mass that allows to keep buoyancy of a military vehicle. The panels are fixed as the outer elements of the container which is simultaneously used for storing the elastic air cushions. Before the water crossing, the air cushions are filled with gas and additional buoyancy force is generated. The paper presents a structure and usage of a multipurpose ballistic protection which, in the passive state, is an additional armour and in the unfolded state increases buoyancy lost in the case of setting additional devices or armament. In the paper, initial simulations developed with the use of Ls-Dyna software are described. The influence of modules number of the air cushion on the buoyancy of the multi-purpose ballistic protection is considered. The advantage of the solution is possibility of the chamber volume change which causes the increase of device volume of the whole module of the chambers is dependent on the vehicle buoyancy which results from its current weight.

Opis:
Military vehicles active protection systems against cumulative missiles are designed to destroy the attacking missile before it hits the vehicle armour. The article presents the results of numerical studies of one of the elements of active protection system, which is the fragmentation destructor. A typical directed fragmentation warhead consists of a few parts: metallic or composite case, explosive material and fragmentation elements in the form of spheres, cylinders. The authors of this study evaluated the influence of the destructor case type – in particular material – on the effectiveness of the destructor. The effectiveness was evaluated on the basis of the maximum speed of balls. Evaluation was performed for the selected balls from each layer. Numerical calculations were performed for two materials of the case: steel and aluminum. It was assumed in simulation that the detonating material is the plastic explosive C4. The numerical analyses were based on the finite element method with the explicit time integration method implemented in the Ls-Dyna program. The interaction of solid and gaseous medium has been modelled using ALE coupling. Mechanical properties of the case were described using a simplified Johnson-Cook type material. The detonation process was described using programmed burn model approximations, and the behaviour of detonation products was described with the JWL (John, Wilkins, Lee) equation.

Regulamin EKG ONZ nr 94: Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to the protection of the occupants in the event of a frontal collision), zawierają metodyki badawcze cywilnych samochodów osobowych.
Military terrain vehicles (ex. armoured vehicles with mass 6000 kg, station wagons, light logistic vehicles) during exploitation in heavy terrain and on roads, can perform ramming some obstacles fencings, entry gates, lights barricades). These vehicles can drive on public roads and participate in road collisions. The crew of these military vehicles is more exposure to the risk of body injury than other civilian cars. Cross-country vehicles have stiff construction of the of bumper-underframe unit, have no controlled crush zone, which in passenger cars absorbs some part of energy of frontal impact. The problem of protection of the military vehicles' crew against frontal impact has not been undertaken until now. Scientific literature includes information concerning cars equipped with special stiffening which represents "crush zone". Certification regulations (ex. Regulation 94) include tests methods of civilian passenger cars. Moreover, making full use of Hybrid 3 mannequin is very expensive. The mass of soldier equipped with helmet and bulletproof jacket is much higher than mass of the testing mannequin. Taking into account mentioned above facts, experimental tests have been performed in real conditions, hitting the car at obstacles at the speed limited up to 8 km/h. Some measurements of accelerations have been performed during frontal impact of the vehicle at flexible and stiff obstacles. Obtained results will be basis for simulational tests and to work out safety device package in order to protect the crew and other sensitive unit and elements.

Opis:
The paper presents testing results that serve the development of research methodology for steerability and stability of military special-purpose vehicles using the SR 60th control robot. Due to their high centre of mass and a large moment of inertia of their body, armoured vehicles pose a serious hazard during dynamic maneuvers. The phenomenon of oversteering is dangerous, which causes automatic reduction in turning radius and thus increases the lateral acceleration at the high-lying centre of mass usually leads to the vehicle rollover. In conditions of a limited tractive adhesion, any slight side impulse (side wind, a drive through a road rut) is enough to result in the vehicle sideslip. At high inertia, each response of any surprised driver is delayed. Therefore, the research studies on behaviour of special-purpose vehicles, including the military ones during road tests are particularly dangerous. The developed methodology allows mitigating the risk of using the steering robot and enables to obtain a very high research results repeatability, unattainable even for a very skilled test driver. The procedure developed hereto is used to accurately determine the safe driving velocity while making sudden maneuvers, and for vehicles steerability characteristics. It may become an excellent tool to verify simulation models.

The paper describes results of research on heavy vehicle tyre with Run Flat VFI insert. The experiment has included the determination of heat generation, rolling resistance, and radial stiffness of two different tyre designs (textile and steel carcass). The results have been used for the purpose of evaluation of tyre operating characteristics. The study included research on non-inflated tyre properties. The purpose of the paper is to determine characteristics of the tyres equipped with inserts, which are essential for driving wheeled APCs. The inserts are composed of polymer rings mounted on the rims inside the tyres. If the inflation pressure of the tyre is very low or if there is no inflation pressure at all, the ring transfers the loads imposed on the tyre to the rim. Usually in such a case, there is a contact of the ring and inner surface of the tyre tread area. Laboratory facility for surveys of heavy vehicles tyres, summary characteristics of radial stiffness and hysteresis of test tyres, temperature distribution on the external surface of the test tyre, comparison of radial characteristics of the tyres tested, example of stiffness characteristics, distribution of temperature on the side of tyre during the road test and carcass damages on the flat tyre are presented in the paper.
