The article discusses the results of the wear of piston rings for internal combustion engines with self ignition. The research was a prototype multilayer ring sealing of the porous coating and the so-called chromium embankment diamonds [2]. Technology of the rings is the deposition of multilayer coatings in the process of chromium plating. In times of chromium deposited from the bath particles are technical diamond's shape, and granulation. This technology is a response to domestic factory piston rings to the needs of the automotive market and is an innovative development. Conducted engine tests consisted of a 50-hour cycle and to hour break-in team life cycle, which was repeated 150 times. Thus the total duration of sample equal to 200 hours. Cycle life is a team containing a phase-hour cycle engine traffic load at maximum speed and maximum torque and maximum power of the tween partial load and idling. This cycle is repeated in the 200-hour test 150 times. During the measurement of key indicators were measured at the engine, the fuel consumption, coolant temperature and pressure of the lubricating oil. In order to calculate the wear of piston rings, the difference was calculated to measure the thickness and height before and after sample of 200 hours. In a similar way as the use of thickness and height of the rings was calculated by weight loss.

The paper presents results of investigation of cylinder liners wear. The investigation was carried out on diesel engines during long lasting operation in 5 motor trucks. Cylinder diameters were measured in two perpendicular planes on four depths using 2-point bore gauge, after removal of the cylinder head. Measurements were made every 50 000 km of vehicle mileage. Such methodology of measurements enabled to determine time course and wear profile of the cylinder liners (wear value in relation to the direction and height of the liner). It was stated that increments of diameter during the first period of operation are several times higher than during the later periods, when the wear intensity is constant. It was also found that wear of the cylinder liner in the plane perpendicular to the engine axis is bigger than in the parallel plane, and that wear in the upper part of the liner is twice as big as in its middle part. Measurement scheme for the cylinder liner; histogram of cylinder liner diameters obtained in measurements after the technological running-in of the engine after mileage of 0, 50,000 km, 150,000 km and 250,000 km, wear profiles of cylinder liners in the two directions at different vehicle mileages are presented in the paper. Estimated profiles of the cylinder liner wear will be used as input data for the calculations of the blowby intensity with the use of mathematical model of PRC set.

Opis:
Assumptions made while modelling the oil film between the ring and the cylinder liner in IC engines, especially concerning the boundaries of the wetted area of the ring face surface, were discussed and the assumptions adopted for the developed model were presented in this study. It was assumed that the model should take into account partially flooded lubrication, which meant that the boundaries of the ring wetted area had to be determined. Based on the adopted assumptions, a model for calculation of the oil film thickness between the cylinder and moving rings, and thickness of the oil film left on the cylinder by the ring pack was developed. A computer application operating in the Windows operation system was developed to carry out numerical calculations. The results of initial numerical calculations were also presented. The proposed model can be utilized to determine the effects of the ring pack geometry, especially the geometry of the ring surface, on parameters of lubrication. These parameters, including the oil film thickness, distribution of pressure in oil film or tangential force, are crucial for friction and wear of cooperating surfaces, oil consumption, and flow of gas from the combustion chamber to the crankcase, thus playing a role in the durability, fuel consumption and emission of an engine.

The super-hard, anti-wear amorphic coatings based on carbon-like diamond (called DLC) show a promising direction in automotive industry, mainly in terms of decreasing friction coefficient in parts of internal combustion engine. However, the technology of producing DLC-coated parts, which is most often chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or physical vapour deposition (PVD) is proven to be still not perfect for achieving desired characteristics of the coating. The thickness of a coating is the main issue one should strive to improve, as the PVD methods produce films as thin as few micrometres. In such case, the coating is not only exposed to cracking, but also pitting is possible to happen. This is proven to be highly undesirable and unacceptable for this process. In addition, in case of thin films, the adhesion to the base is often too weak, despite the coating itself being extremely durable and hard. In this article, a theoretical ways to improve the process of coating are presented. The process itself is described, the achievable parameters are defined and the possible improvements are stated. The research made for the purpose of this article will be further exploited to design a process allowing creating the coating for testing of the best possible characteristics.

The paper presents results of research on changes in the tightness of the combustion chamber during long-term operation. The study was conducted on 5 six-cylinder diesel engines with a swept volume of 6.8 dm mounted in medium size trucks. All 5 trucks were used and serviced in similar conditions. The changes in the tightness o f the combustion chamber were determined on the basis of the results of periodical measurements of maximum compression pressure in cylinders, drop of pressure during a cylinder leakage test and blowby rate under different conditions of engine operation. The investigation was carried out in the range of vehicle mileage of 0-450,000 km. The results show ed that in the initial period of engine use (0-40,000 km) the tightness of the combustion chamber improved, after which it gradually deteriorated. For mileages of over 40,000 km, the significance of linear correlations between results of all tightness measurements and mileage were conflrmed and regression lines were determined. Mean rates of changes in the individual tightness parameters differed considerably among one another. Mazimum compression pressure changed the slowest and blowby the fastest together with mileage. Mean value of maximum compression pressure at 440,000 km was only 13% lower than at 40,000 km, whereas blowby rate at full engine loadat 2200 rpm was 125% higher.

Opis:
The paper presents results of MES calculations of temperature, stress and displacement distributions. The considered engine was the actual naturally aspirated one of 4C90. Calculations were performed by means of Abaqus Standard computer program. The engine elements considered were exhaust and inlet valves. This numerical tool used in the calculations enabled the execution of the finite element method calculations in non-linear range on the basis of iterative calculations of the geometrically non-linear issues using Newton - Raphson methods. The elements utilized in model were of C3D8T type, 8th. nodal, hexagonal to paired temperature-distortional analysis with the shape function of the first type. The elements of this type were used to model geometrically straight elements, such as: the valve seats, weld overlay, the valve guides, the valve disks, the valve stems. The remaining parts of engine were modelled with the utilization of C3D4T elements 4th nodal, tetragonal to paired temperature-distortional analysis with the shape function of the first type. The paired temperature-distortional analysis was carried out. The total number of elements was 371095, in this 20698 elements in inlet valve, 15117 elements in exhaust valve, 3264 elements in weld overlay, 2108 of elements in inlet valve seat, 1664 elements in exhaust valve seat, 126233 elements in the head. Obtained results are in fair agreement with similar studies for the other CI engines. Results of experimental studies into wear mechanisms at the valve seat surfaces are presented. Corrosion, adhesion and indentation wear were documented by means of SEM and EDX measurements. Results of numerical calculation proved that significant sliding takes place on the mating surfaces, which was caused by the mutual displacement of valve seat insert and valve stem.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń numerycznych wykonanych metodą elementów skończonych rozkładów naprężeń, temperatur i odkształceń. Rozpatrywanym silnikiem był wolnossący silnik ZS typu 4C90. Obliczenia wykonano przy pomocy programu Abaqus Standard. Rozpatrywanymi elementami silnika były zawory dolotowe i wylotowe. Zastosowane do obliczeń narzędzie numeryczne umożliwiało wykonywanie obliczeń MES w zakresie nieliniowym w oparciu o iteracyjne techniki obliczeń zagadnień geometrycznie nieliniowych z wykorzystaniem metody Newtona - Raphsona. W modelu wykorzystano elementy typu C3D8T 8-węzłowe, heksagonalne do analizy sprzężonej temperaturowo-odkształceniowej z funkcją kształtu 1-rzędu. Elementy tego typu były wykorzystane do zamodelowania elementów prostych geometrycznie, takich jak: gniazda zaworów, napoina, prowadnice zaworów, talerzyki zaworów, trzonki zaworów. Pozostałe części silnika zamodelowano z wykorzystaniem elementów C3D4T 4-węzłowych, tetragonalnych do analizy sprzężonej temperaturowo-odkształceniowej z funkcją kształtu 1-rzędu. Wykonano analizę sprzężoną temperaturowo-odkształceniową. Liczba elementów wynosiła 371095, w tym 20698 elementów w zaworze ssącym, 15117 elementów w zaworze wydechowym, 3264 elementy w napoinie, 2108 elementów w gnieździe ssącym, 1664 elementy w gnieździe wydechowym, 126233 w głowicy. Rezultaty analiz numerycznych są w dobrej zgodności z publikowanymi wynikami dla innych silników ZS. Zostały przedstawione wyniki badań eksperymentalnych mechanizmu zużywania powierzchni przylgni zaworów. Udokumentowano metodami SEM i EDX występowanie korozji, odkształcenia plastycznego oraz zużycia adhezyjnego. Rezultaty obliczeń numerycznych udowodniły, że występuje znaczny poślizg na powierzchni tarcia co jest spowodowane wzajemnym przemieszczeniem gniazd i zaworów.
