Opis:
Synthetic gas (syngas) produced form waste organic matter may be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines. Possibilities of syngas application as an independent IC engine energy carrier are limited. Designed system of energy conversion from waste to electricity is expected to produce gas consists mainly carbon monoxide, methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Based on theoretical study and own research, as the main factors which impact on floating syngas composition the quality of input substance, process temperature and gasifying medium application were identified. The fluctuation of syngas composition contributes important challenge in aspect of energetic efficiency and mechanical durability of generator system. The researches were provided on research test bed, which enables pressure distribution measurement in the combustion chamber (for various mixture of synthetic gases) and correction of ignition timing. The results of the researches indicate that proper correction of the ignition advance allows syngas mixtures combustion in wide range of their composition.

Present- day development of power transmission systems, especially the ones based on combustion engines, is trying to cope with the issue of improving the energy efficiency of energy processing systems. One of the directions is to use the techniques of thermal energy recovery from an engine's exhaust system. Vast part of the energy produced while burning the air- fuel mixture is lost in the cooling and exhaust systems. Research in this area was conducted by numerous teams, both abroad and in Poland, while focusing on use of Peltirea cells. The results of their research demonstrated small efficiency of these cells. In this paper, the authors have focused on modifications of the exhaust system in order to improve heat exchange between the exhaust system's elements and TEG. The research was conducted while using the ECOTEC 1.8 litre engine from Opel, the X18XE model. The engine was installed in a testbed, in the mechatronic lab at the Faculty of Automotive and Construction Machinery Engineering (SIMR) of Warsaw University of Technology. Spartan HE923 radiators were installed on the cold end of the module. The paper presents the results of the research related to interworking of TEG's with the exhaust system's heat-generating elements of various shapes. The paper reviews the energy efficiency of TEG depending on diverse parameters of gas flow. A parallel system has been assumed (controlled stream and pressure of the flowing exhaust gases without any interference as regards the speed of the of combustion engine). The factor-related experiment accounts for the influence that the pressure and temperature difference, depending on the volume and discharge of exhaust fumes, have on the efficiency of TEG for the same temperature. The results of the experiment are presented in the last section of the article.

One of the main directions of development of power transmission systems in vehicles involves improvement of energy efficiency of combustion engines, especially reduction of the loss related to waste heat in cooling and exhaust systems. The traditional role of the exhaust system is to remove exhaust gases from a combustion engine and muffle the noise created during the engine’s operation. Relevant distribution of temperatures along the entire length of the exhaust system is a very important element in such a complex structure. The examples could be the particulate solids filter or the converter which have to reach a relevant temperature to operate properly while the temperature’s growth is simultaneously restricted due to the limitations associated with the materials used. The research was conducted while using the ECOTEC 1.8 litre engine from Opel, the X18XE model. The engine was installed in a tested, in the mechatronic lab at the Faculty of Automotive and Construction Machinery Engineering (SIMR) of Warsaw University of Technology. The paper reviews the energy efficiency of TEG depending on deferent parameters of gas stream an weather conditions. This is original value of this paper. Nowadays there are more and more discussions on acquisition of energy from sources other than natural sources of energy. Many scientific research centres deal with the issue of energy recovery as well as use of energy from renewable sources. The communities associated with the automotive industry devote a lot of attention to the issue of improving the energy efficiency of vehicles. Since a combustion engine uses less than half of the energy produced during the combustion process, thus the issues of recovery of thermal energy and its conversion into electrical energy evoke increasing interest. The article presents the process of examination of the temperature of the exhaust system in a car engine operating in a laboratory environment. Measuring equipment was used to the temperatures' determine. Analysis of distribution of temperatures in the exhaust system creates grounds for rational selection of the places where the thermal energy recuperation systems should be installed. At present, the possibilities of recovery of thermal energy are still seriously restricted by the properties of the materials of which the elements of the thermal energy recovery systems are made. High propensity of these elements to thermal defects is a serious problem in practical application of these materials in thermal energy recovery systems. The results obtained in an experiment serve as the basis for determining the locations where thermoelectric generators should be installed while accounting for their thermal limitations.

Opis:
The paper deals with research and development of original small-size internal combustion engine Lombardini LGW 702. This engine was optimised for application in micro-cogeneration unit (MCU), equipped with variable-speed generator and electronic converter. The electronically controlled combustion engine in MCU works in a regime depending on the load of the generator. It has the lowest possible number of revolutions and minimum possible fuel consumption. The generator combines directly with the crankshaft of the engine. To reach stable parameters of the network, the power electronics controls and processes the variable frequency of the generator. A combustion engine powered by natural gas can utilise also a blend of natural gas and hydrogen and other alternative fuels produced from renewable sources of energy, e.g. synthesis gases. A comparison of engine parameters was made, namely parameters of engines powered by the above-mentioned alternative fuels, such as syngas, coke-oven gas, landfill gas, sewer gas, Hythane and natural gas. A new three-phase variable-speed generator and converter for micro-cogeneration unit were developed. The rated electric power of MCU is 4 kW. The power overload is 80%, compared to rated power. In the case of natural gas, the best electric efficiency is 25%, the thermal efficiency is 65% and the total efficiency of MCU is more than 90%.

Opis:
It is one of the solutions to use biomass as fuel in order to realize a sustainable society and to reduce carbon dioxide emission .A single cylinder with supercharged and micro-pilot gas engine operated with four kinds of pyrolysis gas as fuel for cogeneration use. The effects of injection pressure and amount of diesel fuel on engine performance and exhaust emissions were investigated. The combustion periods of initial and main stages were determined from the analysis of mass fraction burned. The combustion process was also visualized with a colour highspeed video camera. Main results obtained in this study are as follows: When the amount of diesel fuel increased in the same injection pressure, smoke was exhausted. However, the smoke was reduced with higher injection pressure. The period of the initial combustion is almost the same even if injection pressure and amount of diesel fuel increases. Therefore, it is enough to ignite the mixture with small amount of diesel fuel. For the case with lower calorific gas, the period of main combustion was shortened owing to the combustion of diesel fuel when the amount of diesel fuel increases. When the mixture contains much hydrogen, the period of main combustion does not become small in higher injection pressure and larger amount of diesel fuel. On the other hand, when the mixture does not contain much hydrogen, the effect of diesel fuel becomes strong.

The cogeneration systems of energy production are built and developed to achieve the highest economic and ecologic efficiency. These two aims can be realized by increasing energetic efficiency of transforming different sources of energy into technical systems and optimizing usage of own energy. These can be achieved by the usage of different equipment. The search for new constructions, structure and systems is still developing. This article describes the basic principles for use of Stirling engines in micro immobility cogeneration systems. This attempt is made because the Stirling engines seem to be a convenient equipment of optimizing usage of own energy in micro agropower plants. Especially we try to determine which type of the Stirling engine seems to be the best to fulfil the demands in practice. For this purpose a procedure of selection and adjustment of Stirling engines was formulated. In the described procedure many steps ought to be taken for correct choice of all technical arrangements. In this paper the following topics were considered: energetic demands of small houses, maximum instantaneous electric power, consumption of electric energy throughout a year, maximum instantaneous heating power, consumption of heat energy of the year, selection and choice of construction of Stirling engines, selection and choice of pressure of working gas.

This paper presents a model unit demonstrating the possibility of using a PBCHP10VB CHP unit driven by a piston combustion engine fed with gas fuels for heat and power cogeneration. A mobile unit available in the Department enables heat and power cogeneration at any place with available gas fuel, e.g. compressed in a pressure tank or from a production and transmission system. A radiator is connected to the unit’s heat connection for demonstrative purposes – this is the simplest model of a network using the heat generated by the unit, with the possibility of easy connection to another network for heating rooms and/or tap water instead of this radiator. Any three-phase load (e.g. a single phase converter) can be connected to the unit’s power connection. A constructed mobile power generator fed with alternative gas fuels (e.g. biogas) is described which can be used in the field in a biogas system for power generation with simultaneous heat recovery. The results of the first preliminary tests on the effect of the type of gas fuel used on the obtained electrical and thermal power and on the composition of exhaust gas from the driving combustion engine are presented. A plan for further tests is also outlined.

Cogeneration systems using a Stirling engine [2] are currently being developed and promoted by the European Union [1]. On the other hand, the EU climatic package obligates Polish energy producers to buy 100% CO2 emission rights from 2020 onwards. At that time, according to the experts a ton of CO2 could reach the price of 63.5 Euro. Attention is drawn to the fact that it is only then that nuclear power plants will become profitable, in the same way as wind power plants. This could result in substantial growth of energy prices, both for the economy and for households [3]. The paper presents the experimental research of a cogeneration system with a one-way Alpha type Stirling engine. The impact of the upper heat source and the type of working gas (helium and nitrogen) on the load capacity of the cogeneration system was studied. Based on a Sankey diagram, the power spread of the cogeneration system was analysed. On the basis of experimental research, a model was created of a cogeneration system consisting of the following submodels: Stirling engine of the second order, belt transmission, electric motor and an electrochemical battery. The Stirling engine was installed in a testbed, in the mechatronic lab at the Faculty of Automotive and Construction Machinery Engineering (SIMR) of Warsaw University of Technology. Furthermore, the impact of regenerator efficiency on the efficiency of the Stirling Engine was examined, which in turns impacts the efficiency of the entire cogeneration system.

The present paper is the result of the author's research project no. 4 T12D 030 28 on the "Analysis of the actual technical and operational parameters of gas CHP sets" carried out by him in the years 2005-08, and financed by the Ministry of Science and Informatization in Warsaw. The primary scientific objective of the Project was to establish, compare and analyze the actual values of basic technical, operational and economic parameters for different CHP (Combined Heat and Power) sets driven by gas piston engines, operated in Poland. An analysis of the techniques of fuel gas utilization in piston engine-driven cogeneration sets, being currently used (and also likely to be used in the future), finding their application in combined energy management, has been made within the Project, and a review of the operational conditions of a dozen or so CHP sets operated in Poland, fed by biogas, mine gas from hard coal mine demethanization has been carried out. The results of this analysis have been included in the present monograph which, in addition to the review of the conditions of CHP set operation, provides conclusions that have also utility importance, and therefore can well be useful in making the optimal design of a combined energy system consisting of combustion heat- and power-generating sets.

Due to the ending resources of fossil fuels, as well as instability of the political situation on the world, especially in countries that are their main supplier, governments of poor countries in resources are forced to seek alternative sources of energy. Currently the most commonly used raw material to produce an electrical and thermal power in Poland are coal and lignite, However, in a result of an increase of their prices and an exacerbated by the EU of regulations about an emission of the greenhouse gas, emerged trends, that aim to transform the energy sector through the implementation of technologies based on alternative energy sources. The main focus is to put on renewable energy sources. The methodology, which is contained in this paper, presents a way to designation the demand of the biogas plant with CHP system on substrate of agricultural origin, the aim to obtain required electrical and thermal power. Moreover, the paper presents a simplified diagram of anaerobic fermentation, which is the basis of biogas production, as well as an illustrative diagram of a biogas plant with CHP system. The combined production of electrical and heat energy is one of the preferred, by national policy, activities associated with energy production from renewable sources. The simultaneous generation of heat and electrical or mechanical energy during the same technological process is called cogeneration or combined heat and power, CHP. The presented methodological approach includes an analysis of the data recorded in the research stations and agricultural production stations owned and managed by the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn, performed in order to determine the energy potential of biomass and other renewable energy sources (RES). Depending on the substrates available for UWM in Olsztyn, it is proposed to take a varied approach towards the use of RES by means of biotechnological and thermal biomass conversion. The first method is based on the production of biogas from biomass with the subsequent use of the generated biogas in the process of cogeneration. In the second method, heat energy generated by gasification in a syngas generator will be used for transformation with a Stirling’s engine into mechanical energy and finally into electrical (30%) and heat (60%) energy. The concept of a “Green University” is the result of the performed analyses.

Opis:
This study takes into account engines working in Stirling cycles in cogeneration systems. Stirling engines have been selected because of their characteristics of exploitation. The possibility of their use in cogeneration systems is more favourable in comparison with other combustion engines because they can avoid usage of industrial and transport fuels. The Stirling engines enable the use of biomass, agricultural and other waste energy sources in micro tri- and cogeneration plants dedicated for the use in agriculture and forestry. Considering such applications, three types of usage structures of Stirling engines are proposed. All three structures are dedicated to install in small residential or farm buildings. These three types of structure are named: “type master”, “type slave” and “type customer”. In accordance with the proposed structures, different types of engine constructions are discussed, too. At the same time, the authors described the dependences between Stirling engines and electric power energy systems. The arguments of grid power systems and dispersed energy resource in text were reviewed. After that overview, some legal problems are discussed. Finally, the conception of independent dispersed micro agropower system and some technical equipment were described. Technical realization of the proposed conception requires: proper type, installation and usage of Stirling engines and proper expectations of achieved results.
