Opis:
This paper presents a flight safety analysis over the past a dozen or so years. The analysis was mostly conducted on the basis of statistical data recorded by units responsible for flight safety in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland. The first part of the paper presents a brief historic outline and basic flight safety-related definitions. It also describes basic elements of flight safety formulated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO. It presents theories providing reasons for the occurrence of aviation incidents and1 the role of a human factor in flight safety and at the same time makes known so called James Reason's Model that explains why aviation accidents occur. In addition, it includes a few examples of the occurrence of serious accidents caused by the human factor. It also emphasises the importance of the system of aviation-related events reporting and investigation and the planning of preventive actions to be taken. The paper also stresses the need to change the way of thinking about aviation accident prevention, where the most important questions are not what or who, but why and how. The second part of the paper presents flight safety analysis in the Armed Forces for the previous year.

Opis:
The research article discusses the advantages of using compressor downstream air partial bleed and supplying it downstream of the turbine, which was applied in a prototype of a “bypass” turbojet engine. The objective of such a turbo engine structural solution was discussed along with its elements and principle of operation. Further part of the article determines the impact of such partial air bleed on the value of achieved basic operating parameters of the engine, i.e., unit thrust and unit power consumption. The presented attempt to compare these parameters with the parameters achieved for a turbojet, single flow engine is very important; in the first case without air bleed, and in the second, with air bleed to the environment. Further sections of the article compared these parameters relative to a turbojet, turbofan engine with a jet mixer. Such comparisons enabled to determine the actual benefits of using compressor downstream air partial bleed and supplying it downstream of the turbine, which may constitute an intermediate solution between single flow turbine engines and turbo fan engines. Wide possibilities for the application of such structural solutions were shown, which was summarised in the conclusions.

Opis:
The never-ending attempt to obtain as low mass as possible is the reason for using material of high specific strength (stiffness) in the aerospace industry. High strength titanium or aluminium alloys (e.g. 2024T3) and composite laminates (e.g. CFRP or Glare) are the examples of such materials. Despite a large number of composite types, fibre reinforced composites in the form of laminates are commonly used in aircraft structures. One-half of modern aircrafts is made of composites. However, the second one is still made of metallic alloys. The usage of different materials in aircraft structures results in the necessity of joining composite and metallic components. There are three connection methods for aircraft primary structures: mechanical (riveting, bolting), adhesive (bonding) and hybrid where both mentioned methods are used. The paper deals with metal-composite mechanical joint. Although fibre reinforced composites have high tensile strength, the load transfer in mechanical joints of such components is limited. Strength of composite laminates is dependent on the joint geometry; however, it is strongly influenced by laminate lay-up. There are five global failure modes for mechanically fastened composite laminates: tension, bearing, shear-out, cleavage and pull-through. The bearing failure mechanism is a safe progressive mechanism not leading to catastrophic failure and therefore it is acceptable. Problems with strength assessment of composite mechanical joints are drawn. Some geometrical (joint width), material (bolt material, stacking sequence) as well as numerical parameters (failure criterion) are analysed.

Opis:
Riveting is still one of the main joining methods of thin-walled aircraft structures. Such features as simplicity of implementation, possibility of two different material connection (e.g. metallic with non-metallic ones) and the fact that is it a well-known (reliable) method causes popularity of riveting. The never-ending attempt to obtain as low mass as possible (mainly to reduce fuel consumption) is the reason for using material of high specific strength in the aerospace industry. High strength titanium or aluminium alloys (e.g. 2024T3) and composite laminates (e.g. CFRP or Glare) are examples of such materials. The article deals with methods of connecting various materials. The paper presents advantages and disadvantages of different/selected connection types. Strength prediction and failure modes of mechanical joints are described for metallic as well as for composite components. Composites are complex materials having an anisotropic structure (and anisotropic mechanical properties) leading to various failure mechanisms. Main principles for appropriate joint design of composite laminate panels (laminate configuration and typical/specific geometrical dimensions) are indicated/specified. The bearing failure mechanism is accepted to be a safe progressive one. Mechanism of bearing (generally compressive) load transfer into composite laminates by shear of the matrix is analysed. Some examples of improvement bearing strength of laminates are presented according to literature. On the base of presented examples and bearing load transfer analysis, some conclusions for an appropriate solution of this problem are drawn.

Opis:
The article presents the safety issue bonded to the Polish Air Force F-16 multirole aircraft. The authors pointed out the issue of fuel used for emergency supply system of these aircrafts. The article emphasized the fact that these aircrafts require special fuel with designation H-70, which is 70% aqueous solution of toxic hydrazine. For this reason, the rescue services of Polish Air Force bases where Polish F-16 are stationed had to be adjusted accordingly. Just as importantly, authors noticed that in the event of an emergency landing of this aircraft at different airports could receive difficulties associated with the possible leakage of hydrazine, or its neutralization in the absence of specialized Hydrazine Response Team, which are part of the Airport Rescue Group. After the introduction of new aircraft for use in the Polish Air Force (in this case F-16 multirole aircraft), it is necessary to analyse the safety of their use in the context of potential places on which they can land. This is related, among others, to the safety of managing liquid fuels. In the case of F-16 aircraft, one must bear in mind besides the F-34 fuel, also hydrazine (H- 70). The article presents a functional diagram of EPU system of emergency power supply EPS of F-16 multirole aircraft.

The challenge to the manufacturer or service provider is how to assess and define true customer expectations and then how to design, manufacture and sell the product to best meet those expectations. Each product must provide operational capabilities, which allow military forces to maintain technical and logistic superiority over a potential adversary even if it is just natural or induced environment, which can be expected over the operating and maintenance portion of life cycle. Battle damage repair is a critical factor in managing operation. We acknowledge that traditional cost minimizing measures are not always central and other performance measures such as time of repair, reliability and availability become more relevant. Assessing aircraft damages in the field and making appropriate decisions on the reparability, making repairs at the lowest repair level possible and evaluating airworthiness of subsequent repairs is critical to the air forces maintaining its force projection capability. Among other, combat damage of helicopters, damaged areas and erosion on leading edges of the compressor first stage rotor blades, achievable and optimum solution, goal function – duration minimisation, goal function – cost minimisation are presented in the paper.

Opis:
This paper describes the analysis and conclusions regarding the use of butanol/biobutanol as a component of conventional mineral fuels employed in different areas of transportation. Butanol from biomass - biobutanol is interesting as biocomponent of gasoline, diesel fuel as well as aviation fuels. This is especially important in case of air transport, which is the carbon dioxide emission source of the fastest growth. Biobutanol is tested as biocomponent of gasoline, including aviation ones, but there are no information about biobutanol added to mineral Jet fuel as well as diesel fuel. Direction of research conducted by leading aviation companies indicates that hydrocarbon biocomponent will be main biofuel used as aviation turbine fuel. One of reported technology is focused on use of butane-1-ol as semi-finished products for isoparaffinic hydrocarbons generation that then would be used for aviation turbine fuels production. In order to do such analysis the preliminary lab testing of blends of butanol isomers with aviation fuel Jet A-1 and diesel fuel were performed. The paper contains the results of standard tests for blends of mineral fuels with butane-1-ol and butane-2-ol added in concentration of 0-20 %(V/V). Both the advantages and disadvantages regarding the use of such component of mineral fuels are presented. Butanol decreases value of flash point and significantly influence on conductivity of Jet fuel. In case of aviation fuel for turbine engines, and diesel fuel, the restrictions regarding direct use of butanol are important. However, butanol can be treated as semi-finished material for synthesizing of biohydrocarbons used in above applications.

Opis:
A distress event i.e. loss of engine power, structural damage etc., creates a major emergency situation in General Aviation (GA) aircraft. It requires location of a safe-to-land runway within reach, and immediately planning and executing an effective flight path towards it. Currently, technological development in avionics allows creating a flight deck decision support tool for trajectory planning of GA aircraft in emergency situation. Principal part of the system constitutes flight path optimization module. The automated path-planning algorithm generates within seconds an optimized trajectory to be followed by the pilot to safe landing. The trajectory planning is formulated as an optimal control problem, with the aircraft kinematics and dynamics expressed by the state equations, and objective functional that may capture the time, length, energy loss, etc. Obstacles and restricted or prohibited zones are represented as constraints on the positional state variables. The purpose of the paper is to present the method of flight path optimization of an aircraft in emergency, after a distress event, which makes impossible continuation of the original flight. The methods allow determining optimal escape flight path from special protection areas (e.g. cities etc.) or danger zones, as well. The simplified realization of the Ritz-Galerkin method was used in this work, which uses an approximate solution to boundary value problems for determining the optimal flight trajectory. The method allows determining the optimal trajectory of the flight satisfying the initial/final conditions and control functions and path constrains for an aircraft.

Opis:
Magnetorheological elastomers have properties that can be altered by magnetic field. Many materials were invented more than 30 years ago, but their development and improvement over the past three decades has led to new, more varied uses of these adaptable materials. The main goal of the paper is to present and investigate the application of a magnetorheological elastomer in an aviation structure. The potential advantage of this solution is a possibility to adjust the shape of the wing during the flight by altering the magnetic field strength, which in turn causes deflection of a magnetorheological elastomer. For the purpose of the investigations, an E214 aerofoil has been selected. The original, carbon composite model set a reference value of both lift and drag coefficient for an E214 profile. A thin layer of magnetorheological elastomer was placed on the upper side of the reversed wing. In order to fully understand the effect of such structural change on an aerial profile, the new research stand was designed and manufactured for the purpose of this research in the Institute of Aviation. Experiments were conducted due to evaluate the influence of magnetorheological elastomer on the overall performance. Results of investigations were presented and discussed.

High quality of components used in constructions of Landing Gears forces the manufacturers to choose appropriate technologies in order to manufacture and control dimensions of particular details. It is especially difficult to predict how the elements of huge dimensions will act during heat treat and chemical processing. The changes in size and. shape of the elements of suspension of STRUCTURAL POST aircraft are connected with hardening stresses. This requires accurate determining of allowance of final machining. The analysis of processing parameters and manufacturing of a precise component is possible with the use of high-tech coordinate measuring techniques based on touch and untouched measurements . Experimental research of the dynamic properties of structures is performed during of prototype perfectioning, current exploitation and even after the withdrawal from the exploitation for the estimation of the residual durabilities. The aim for research of the dynamic properties of structures is the assurance of its safety, reliability, economic management and comfort. Researcher records the amplitudes of vibrations in the function of the actuation frequencies. Local raise of the amplitude is qualified as resonance. From the researcher point of view, the shape of resonance curves justifies the discrimination of two types of phenomena's: „single resonance" and „close frequencies resonance". For better understanding of these occurrences „the models of interpretation" were proposed. Up to three models of interpretation were assigned to the single resonance: one-degree-of-freedom system, one-degree-of-freedom system with share of the backlashes, two one-degree-of-freedom systems with the same frequencies. From above reasoning, the conclusion results that researcher can expect that the preliminary isolated single resonance belongs to one from the three, mentioned above cases. The judgment of these occurrences, just as the disentanglement of relations in the resonance pair with close frequencies, determines next challenge for the researcher.

A program and tools enabling general aviation operators in our country the exploitation of the piston engines oncondition has been developed in the Institute of Aviation. Apart from the existing and strictly supervised engine manuals tasks, the program introduces, among other things, new maintenance mandatory activities like engine parameter monitoring during cruise and climb and a way of assignation diagnostic tolerance limits for them. That has never been performed in the aviation piston engines maintenance practice. In order to improve such analysis a flight data recorder (FDR) EDM 900 has been installed on the DA20- C1 „Katana” aircraft equipped with IO-240-B engine, which will allow elimination of the pilot's read errors and examination of the changes in the parameters during the entire flight. This will enable estimating if at a certain time of the flight a specified engine parameter is not exceeding the permissible values. Parameters from cruise have to be recorded in the similar range of the engine rpm’s. The parameters are oil pressure, oil temperature, cylinder head temperature, EGT, fuel flow, outside air temperature, rpm and altitude. Lower and upper acceptable limit values should be set, in which they can be contained throughout engine life. Engineers should also observe the trend of their changes. This article shows results of the aviation piston engine parameters analysis taken from FDR for ground runs, take-offs and cruise flight phases.
