Opis:
The article presents the experimental method of instantaneous contact area in hypoid gear transmission. The prototypes of hypoid gear have been made with one of the rapid prototyping method — Vacuum Casting process. This method permits to manufacture gear wheel with very complicated tooth profile in silicone tool (form or matrix) created in vacuum chamber with reduced pressure. Silicone matrix allows creating prototype in casting process or low pressure process. Silicone matrix has been made on the basis of gear transmission of car transmission system. Gears were made of transparent polymer materials to enable observation of the instantaneous contact area. The instantaneous contact area is that tooth flank surface area, which is in contact with mating surface of another tooth at a specific moment. Correct mating of gears and their kinematic precision depend on the shape and size of instantaneous contact area, as well as on changes during gear 's rotation. Contact between gear surfaces of geometrically ideal gearbox occurs at a point or line, but, because of a deformability of mating teeth flanks, in reality it is always a certain surface. The method of tooth contact area as described in the paper, permits a dynamic determination of the gearbox mating area. Existing experimental methods permit only a static observation of the mating area.

Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA)
Opis:
The paper contains description of an experimental method of Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA). In practice there is mainly more than one pair of teeth in contact in gear. In determined orientation of gear wheels instantaneous contact ellipses occur between teeth. Shape and size of the contact ellipses are dependent on gear material, geometry and load. In manufacturing practice only mating areas are determined on control machines without operating load. Mainly analytical methods and a Finite Element Method are used to determine instantaneous contact ellipses. It is essential to observe changes in instantaneous contact ellipses relative to the rotations of wheels in gear drive in the range of a single pitch. In proposed solution of the problem the instantaneous contact ellipses and bearing area are experimentally determined using a rapid prototyping (RP) process. Prototypes of gear are assembled in a special device and loaded by torque. A transparent resin has been used to observe the instantaneous contact pattern. The principle of a mechanical similarity was applied.

With the developing of science and technology the use of gears has become more common in all the upcoming industries. Accessory units used in aircraft provide the power for hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems in addition to providing various pumps and control systems for efficient engine operation. The design of an effective and reliable gearing system is governed, amongst other factors, by its ability to withstand high root bending stress (RBS) and surface contact stress(SCS). A number of authors have utilized thefmite element method to predict RBS and SCS in gears. This paper presents the utilization of a three-dimensional (3D), finite element method (FEM) to conduct RBS and SCS calculations of a pair ofspur gears. Firstly a pair of parallel spur gears without errors and tooth modifications is defined in a CAD system. Then, MES analysis is conducted. Using FEM to calculate the RBS the load is applied as a force to the tip of the gear, it is modeled as a linear force uniformly distributed along the face width and perpendicular to the tooth surface. The SCS is considered as nonlinear contact analysis, where the contact of the pair of gears is assumed on teeth flanks. The tooth RBS and SCS of the same pair of gears are calculated and presented. Gears with wrought alloy steel are considered. The results are compared with the ISO standards, Levis formula and Hertz equation. The analysis was made for applied moment equal: 600[Nm], 1200[Nm] and 1600[Nm]. It was found that the calculated results are comparable. Finally, an example of calculating a pair of spur gears is given in the paper.

Opis:
Finite Element Method is one of the most frequently used computational schemes in numerical analyses. A contact phenomenon is an essential issue when modelling the physical interaction between two or more bodies. Depending on the used software, the various contact algorithms are applied. In the paper, the authors present the results of evaluation of different contact methods implemented in LS-Dyna CAE software. The most common problem arising during contact modelling is the occurrence of penetration between the coupling elements, which leads to an increase of contact forces and, consequently, a local deformation of finite elements. In the introduction, a theoretical background related to mathematical aspects of contact modelling is presented, in particular search methods for contact surfaces and the penalty forces calculating method. Subsequently, a contact analysis for different variants of interaction of the elements is presented. In the first analysed case, shaft- sleeve interaction, in both rotation and translation, is presented. The variable factors in this case were a number of interacting finite elements and the type of a contact algorithm. The second case focused on the interaction forces resulting from the interaction between two sliding bodies in the harmonic motion. A sliding body was pressed against the plane using an increasing force. A variable factor in this case was the type of the implemented contact algorithm.

Opis:
The analysis of many engineering problems involves not only deformation of the considered system, but occurrence of the interaction between the individual separate elements of the system as well. The occurrence of friction is the most common phenomenon occurring during this interaction. In the case of intense friction, the heat released in this process is also important. In computer methods of mechanics, the process of interaction between bodies is carried out using special algorithms. The most frequently applied are: the penalty method, the barrier method, direct elimination of constraints, the Lagrange multiplier method, the perturbed Lagrangian method, the augmented Lagrangian method, Nitsche method. Owing to its easy implementation process, an approach based on a penalty function is often applied. In this approach, the contact between the bodies can be identified with the presence of the spring between the elements of the bodies in the contact. The stiffness of the spring depends on: material bulk modulus, face area, volume or shell diagonal and a numerically selected scale factor. The article will present the results of analyses that will allow fast and easy selection of its value. In the analyses there were presented the results considering the basic types of contacts: node to surface, surface to surface and surface to surface mortar.

The article presents the research results referring to the analysis of the influence of finish treatment (lathing, grinding, burnishing) on the contact fatigue of steel applied to marine pump shafts. The research was performed on a roller 25mm in diameter made of X5CrNi18-10 (AISI304 L) stainless steel. The lathing process was carried out by means of a Sandvik Coromant cutting too, the grinding was done by grinding attachment to a lathe, whereas the process of burnishing was performed by SRMD burnisher by Yamato. Within the research, the optimalization of burnishing technological parameters was conducted on account of the minimalization of Ra surface roughness coefficient as well as the maximalization of SU degree of surface layer relative hardness. The multi criteria optimalization conducted by min-max method with regard to minimum surface roughness as well as maximum degree of surface layer hardness demonstrated that burnishing process should be carried out at the following technological parameters: burnishing force 1.1 kN, burnishing speed 35 m/min, feed 0.13 mm/rev. In addition, the influence of the burnisher passes number on the surface layer quality was determined. It is essential for this research to determine the burnishing influence on the service conditions which comprises the electrochemical corrosion research, friction wear and contact fatigue research. The paper will present the research results of contact fatigue examination of samples after finish machining.

The development and implementation of the new technologies and materials are one of the conditions allowing improving the aircraft structures. The composite materials enable to reduce the aircraft weight and keep appropriate strength and fatigue properties. Application of the composite materials in the wing elements, and metal alloys in assemblies of the aircraft fuselage requires elaboration of the appropriate method for technology joining metal and composite. Bonding eliminates breakages in the composite plies which are initiated during assembly process of the structure with mechanically fastened joints e.g. bolts [1]. The strength and stiffness of the composite depend on shape and direction of the fibre which carry the tensile and compression stresses. Shear stress and strength of the composite depend on the resin system. Therefore, the use of composites brings more complicated design approach compare to metal. The aim of the study is tofind appropriate method to determine the failure loading of the metal-composite aircraft wing pivot fitting. Numerical and laboratory investigations for metal-composite joints are presented. Interaction between the composite plies is modelled as the contact problem. It allows determining the strain and stress at the contact surfaces and stress concentration fields. Contact modelling technique is also applied to model interface between metal and composite. Engineering approach to the model full-scale co-curing triple stepped lap joint is presented. The professional engineering software tools are used to create accurate models. Tensile tests of the metal-composite joint were carried out to verify the numerical analysis methods.

The paper talk over the proposal of use a combined vision system architecture for solved well known issue occurring in material handling devices (MHDs) exploitation, especially in the crane devices. The described in the presented paper stereovision system for work space mapping and non-contact sensor type for rope angle swinging measure were a part of solutions enabling a full autonomous navigation system (ANS) realized by the overhead travelling crane. In the paper special authors care was dedicated on two issues. The first one was connected with MHDs workspace mapping with built three-dimensional model of their structure. The second part of the paper considering the possibility of attaches image analysis technique into non-contact rope swinging sensor architecture. In this paper, two main problems were identified: crane workspace visualization and need of develop new type of anti-sway technique. For workspace, visualization technique of author's proposed, well known stereovision, but not in standard architecture (to compose stereovision picture one camera was use). In terms of anti-sway technique, authors choose close-loop control system. Thus was develop non-contact anti sway sensor. The common point of both developed methods (anti sway solution and workspace visualization) is vision methods. At the end raises a following conclusion: vision systems and image analysis method are perfect not only in acquiring an information about crane workspace and potential obstacles dimension (stereovision), but also useful as a standalone measurements system of chosen and useful crane parameters. All tests were conducted on the physical model of the scaled overhead travelling crane with 150 kg hosting capability.

Opis:
The slewing bearings are applied in heavy working machines and operated in extreme conditions. A characteristic feature of these bearings are a high load which determining a large deflection of a contact zone rolling element - raceway. This phenomenon combined with the effects of a bearing clearance causes a significant increase in a contact angle of the bearing. This in turn causes displacement of the contact zone to an undesirable position. In the construction of slewing bearing is applied of a large value of the osculation ratio. This leads to occur of large sizes of the contact zone identified in a radial cross-section. The sizes are comparable to values of the radius of the ball. The contact zone is type of quasi-linear. Effects of changes the position of the contact zone in the double-row ball slewing bearing has been presented in the paper. The raceway profile for such bearing consists of the arc section changing in the radial section. When the contact zone includes a change point of curvature of the raceway profile it comes to a concentration of a contact stress, and this is unfavourable for operation of the bearing. In order to eliminate this phenomenon to the profile introduced a transition curve. For this purpose was selected a clothoid. The curve ensures a gradual change of curvature from the arc section of the profile to the zero curvature of the straight profile section. The raceway profile becomes the smooth curve of the second rank. In the article are presented a numerical model of the contact zone for the double-row ball slewing bearing and the distributions of a pressure in the contact zone for the ordinary and modified raceway profiles. The calculation results have been presented as graphs of the distributions of the pressure along the contact zone. It has been shown that the introduction modification of the raceway profile eliminates the concentration of the pressure along the contact zone profile. The results obtained can be used during design of the raceway profiles of the double-row ball slewing bearing.

In this paper, the author presents the results of measurements of the slide journal bearings and micro-bearings sleeves and journal surfaces. The study was performed with the atomic force microscope (AFM) NT-206. The results of measurements of surface topography are presented in the form of a 2D and 3D map of surface topography and also in the form of profiles for selected cross-sections of examined surfaces. Additionally, the height distributions of surface roughness are presented. The Atomic Force Micsroscope NT-206 allows investigating the surface of sample with maximum scanning area 32μm x 32μm and with the maximum value of roughness ±1μm. The measurements can be carried out in three modes: static (contact) mode, dynamic (non-contact) mode, dynamic intermittent mode. The author used the contact mode. The application of this mode of operation, in the case of samples with a hard surface, for example, the journal of a bearing, enables to obtain a good mapping of the measured surface. The presented in this paper results of surface topography measurements, include the calculated values of the Ra and Rq parameters and also the maximum value of the distance between the lowest and the highest surface inequality. The obtained results allow evaluating the amount and type of wear of researched elements in the micro-scale and they also are useful in the design of such surface layers of co-operating components, in order to obtain optimum tribological properties. When considering the impact of the surface roughness on the change of height of bearing gap, and consequently the change of flow and operating parameters, the information about average distribution of roughness value is required. With such measurements, it is possible to obtain these data. In the presented research the micro-bearings from personal computers hard drives, as well as classic bearings and sleeves, were investigated.

In this paper, we present Fourier series less approaches for determining the energy produced by discontinuous time periodic forces in the wheel-rail contacts of the railway track systems. The vehicle system model used in this study consists of a quarter car supported on a bogie, while the side frame is supported on two wheel sets. The main advantage of the presented method is the total elimination of frequency analysis, which in effect introduces important simplifications in the identification of the energetic effects in the contact. Fundamental properties of contact displacements of the rail surface have been considered on the basis of the newly established method. The contact zone between railway wheels and the rail surfaces made of bulk materials is perceived as strong enough to resist the normal (vertical) forces introduced by heavy loads and the dynamic response induced by track and wheel irregularities. The analysis is carried out for a wheel running on an elastic rail rested on sleepers arranged on completely rigid foundation. The established model of the wheel-rail contact dynamics has been applied to that same roll plane, but with taking into account a nonlinear characteristic of the sleeper with respect to the ground. Attention then is focused completely on the modelling of the energy absorbed by the rail. The applied method employs the energy state variables as time functions leading to determine the susceptibility of a given contact on the strength induced by the rail roll.

The article presents the influence of the shape of the cutting insert on the surface roughness of the material after medium-fine turning machining. The analysis of measurements of the Ra parameter describing the arithmetic mean deviation of the surface roughness profile from the centre line of the profile by the mechanical and contact method was made using the Hommel Etamic Waveline 20 profile (Gdynia Maritime University). The tests were carried out on three stainless steel X2CrNiMo17-12-2 / 1.4404 shafts with a diameter of 80 mm, subjected to medium-precision turning machining at a length of 270 mm, using three cutting inserts made of tungsten carbide shaped T – triangular, C – rhombic, W – trigonal manufactured by Pafana. Values of used parameters are turning speed Vc = 150 m/min, depth of cut ap = 2 mm and feed f = 0.2 mm/rev. The parameters have been selected according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The tests were carried out three times, five measurements on the length of the turned part of the rollers. The first test was made after collecting one layer of material, the second test was carried out after collecting five layers of material, and the third test was made after collecting nine layers of material. The article describes the differences between the used tiles and their effect on surface roughness, presents the results of the research, charts of measurements with averaged values and descriptive statistics of the Ra parameter were presented. It was noted that for all measurements of the Ra parameter, the smallest values were obtained using a W-shaped cutting insert. The Ra parameter using the C and T shaped plates increases with each subsequent measurement. The largest value of the Ra parameter is obtained using the T.
