Opis:
Self-ignition engines are currently used to drive lorries, agricultural and road construction machines, as well as passenger cars. Common Rail supply systems are widely used in such engines. Arguments for using these systems include the simple construction of a system as well as practically unlimited control of fuel feeding (division of a fuel dose into several portions), which allows for controlling the fuel combustion process. This facilitates optimisation of the combustion process in limiting toxic emissions, which is the main evaluation criterion for modern combustion engines. Operation of an engine with a Common Rail system is controlled by an Electronic Diesel Control (EDC), which is responsible not only for controlling the supply system, but also for the diagnostics of the whole engine. The diagnostic monitors embedded in the controller supervise the operation of the supply system, but also of the whole engine, including the systems responsible for reducing toxic emissions released to the atmosphere, in accordance with the European On Board Diagnostic (EOBD) standard. Unfortunately, despite sophisticated diagnostic functions, defects sometimes occur in vehicles with engines with a CR system, which are not signalled by EOBD systems. In such cases, an additional tool is needed to help a diagnostician to identify the cause of improper operation of an engine. This article presents several examples to describe the diagnostics of a Common Rail system using an analyser of diagnostic electric signals to detect the cause of such defects.

The paper aims to present the results of investigations into the engine with Common Rail system that performs multi-phase injection. The scope of investigations included measurements and assessment of fast-changing quantities. The paper provides the research stand description and a block diagram o f the system for taking measurements offast-changing quantities, including the system measuring the intensity of the current that controls the injector operation. The experimental results discussed in the paper were derived from introductory investigations into measurements of the air-fuel mixture pressure in the engine cylinder and those of the injector needle lift, which were assessed on the basis of measurements of the intensity of the injector-controlling current. Tests were performed while the engine operated under external speed characteristics and under load characteristics at the crankshaft rotational speed n=l200 rpm and n =3800 rpm. During tests, depending on speed and load characteristics of the engine operation, the ECU performed different strategies of fuel injection. The fuel injection control system madę it possible to complete three injection stages in a single work cycle of the internal combustion engine (pilot injection, pre-injection and the main injection). The maximum fuel pressure in the common rail amounted to 160 MPa. The engine was fuelled by commercial diesel oil.

Opis:
A wide use of common-rail injection systems in vehicles made it necessary to develop effective methods of diagnosing and repair of their subassemblies. The paper presents problems connected with diagnosing of malfunctions and regeneration of common-rail system injectors with the use of testing tables. Due to precise workmanship and strong forces, the systems are particularly exposed to damage most often caused by the application of fuels of inadequate quality. Early detection of damage symptoms may contribute to considerable decrease of costs of repair without entailing any failures of other components of the system. The authors discuss the most common methods of evaluation of the condition allowing a quick and explicit identification, whether a given injector has been damaged or not. Further deliberations lead to the determination of possible regeneration of individual generation systems of various manufacturers. The authors also present basic activities of the regeneration process and tests made with the use of testing tables. The work presents results of tests performed on a new injector with the use of testing equipment of various manufacturers. Discussion on obtained results leads to conclusions that, due to little recurrence and insufficient accuracy of measurements, possibilities of clear evaluation of technical condition of injectors is greatly limited.

The increasing global energy demand and the decreasing fossil-energy resources are enhancing the interest in the combustion characteristics of alternative fuels for diesel engines. Alternative-fuel combustion has been studied in detail in light-duty diesel engines, even if the comparison of test results from different chemical nature fuels obtained by integrated optical methodologies is lacking. Thus, it is the primary objective of the present study to characterize the combustion of selected alternative fuels in an optical common rail compression ignition engine by high-speed luminescence imaging and natural emission spectroscopy. The effects of the fuels on in-cylinder spray combustion and soot formation were investigated through UV-visible digital imaging and natural emission spectroscopy. Experiments were performed in a single cylinder high swirl compression ignition engine. The test engine was optically accessible and equipped with a common rail multi-jets injection system. Several injection pressures and timings at two EGR rates were tested. Digital imaging allowed characterizing the evaporating spray and the combustion process. UV-visible emission spectroscopy was used to follow the evolution of the combustion process chemical markers. Chemiluminescence signal due to OH was identified. The soot spectral feature in the visible wavelength range was correlated to soot engine out emissions. Conventional and optical data related to diesel fuel blended with gasoline and butanol were compared.

Opis:
In the last few decades exhaust emissions of road vehicles have decreased dramatically, owing to the more and more stringent emission standards issued by the legislative bodies of different countries, combined with the necessity of cleaner, better performing vehicles from society side. The introduction of Common Rail (CR) injection systems has been a great step towards achieving this target, thanks to its flexibility in fuel injection pressure, timing, and length, along variable engine load conditions. However, it is highly time and resource consuming to set up the injection system for all operating points of different engines, moreover, as the injection is a small scale, high speed process, the behaviour of the internal processes is challenging to measure. The best solution for these problems is to create a detailed model of the injector, where all the hydraulic, mechanic, and electromagnetic subsystems are represented, this way the internal working conditions can be analysed and resources can be saved. In this work, a detailed model of a first generation CR injector for commercial vehicles is presented and validated against needle lift data. The fluid dynamic and mechanic sub-systems are presented in details to thoroughly investigate the working principles of the injector internal parts. The fluid dynamic subsystem contains the chambers, holes, and throttles of the injector, while the mechanic subsystem models the motion and behaviour of the internal parts. The main features of the injector internal working conditions are described and analysed. Apart from the needle lift, these included solenoid anchor, pin and control piston lifts, the control chamber pressure and the mechanical force acting on the anchor. Five test cases were chosen on a medium duty test engine to represent a wide range of operation points from full load to idle and the simulated results were compared to the measured data. The simulated control piston movement accurately matched the measured curves in every test case.

Opis:
The issues addressed in this paper concern the effect of pressure in the Common Rail accumulator on the engine operating parameters such as its torque, power output, rotational speed as well as its hourly and specific fuel consumption. Here, the research methods were performed by using the engine test bench strictly in accordance with the specific standards but particularly according to the requirements specified by these standards. The research station was the Fiat Multijet 1.3 JTD engine with turbocharging and direct injection, used as a power unit in the motor cars. Additionally, the experimental tests were run by using also (1) the HP-made measuring set for measurements the high pressure (up to 2,500 bars) in the Common Rail system, and (2) the CDIF/2 diagnostic interface. All relationships are presented in the form of graphs, and what is found here is the increasing linear relationship between the p rail pressure and the engine speed: with an increase in speed comes a decrease in the total injection time. The torque and its power output were a function of both the pressure in the Common Rail accumulator and the speed. It was found that the highest total engine efficiency (fuel consumption per unit) was for the rail pressure ranging from 1,000 to 1,100 bars. The findings come up for discussion about the apt choice of pressure in the rail, together with the total injection time and the turbocharger highest efficiency, for the specified speed of a car power unit.

Opis:
In recent years the use of alternative fuels based, among other things, on vegetable oil is causing increasing concern, which is also observed in our country. Such fuels have different physical and chemical properties (especially viscosity) with reference to the standard diesel fuel. Therefore it is important to know the effect of the additive of biocomponents on fuel injection process, in particular of its parameters, which play an important role in the combustion process and formation of pollutions in exhaust gases. In the paper is presented the test results of selected parameters of the injection process executing by four different electromagnetically controlled injectors using diesel fuel without the biocomponents and mixtures of such fuel with esters of rapeseed oil (FAME). Investigations were carried out on a specially prepared test stand which enables the measurement of fuel delivery and fuel returning from the injector together with its density and temperature. Additionally, beside mentioned parameters, there were recorded high-speed courses of pressure in the high-pressure pipe behind the rail and before the injector. Next, using a system of AVL Visioscope, the fuel injection into the visualization chamber filled with fuel was recorded. It determined the basic parameters of the fuel spray. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of fuel type on the injection process executed by the injectors with different constructional parameters.

In recent years the compression ignition engines with direct injection equipped with common rail system are subject to intensive development. Mainly, the reason for it the ecological considerations are. Generally the engines of this type are characterized by relatively low specific fuel consumption, lower noisy and lower emission of toxicity components in relation to DI engines with conventional injection system. Especially the main advantage of common rail system is possibility of easy controlling the injection parameters. Therefore a very important is parameters of control signals of injection system, including injectors, because they have the influence on fuel amount. In the article the effect of CR injector control signal on injection process was presented. The measurements were taken at constant frequency running of injector and set values of rail pressure. The temperature of injected fuel was controlled also. The researches were conducted with test stand equipped with test bench with electronic measuring offuel amount. In the centre of attention was peak current-duration at set values of injector opening signal. The tests were conducted at single injection and for two types of injector.

Opis:
In the next few decades, the resources of oil will be depleted. From the other hand, growing market and usage of oils cause increase of oil price. Additionally, only some countries have oil deposits large enough to be independent from foreign suppliers. All these reasons show need for searching and development of new fuels, which can replace traditional ones produced from oil. One of the solutions for Diesel engines are bio-fuels produced from various vegetable oils like rapeseed, coconut or palm oil. Nowadays, the majority of new Diesel engines are equipped with Common Rail fuel injections system. It enables to achieve higher power of the engine, lower emissions and lower fuel consumption. This suggests that the Common rail system should be also utilized in Diesel engines supplied with bio-fuels, produced from various plants, as it was mentioned above. However, the bio-fuels have some properties much different from those of conventional Diesel fuel, for example they usually have significantly higher viscosity. In consequence, the fuel supply and fuel injection systems require some modifications. The paper presents results of the experimental test of Common Rail Diesel engine supplied with four fuels: standard Diesel fuel, rapeseed oil and two mixtures of these fuels: 70 percent of Diesel with 30 percent of rape seed oil and 50 percent of Diesel fuel with 50 percent of rape seed oil. For the research, a new test bench was built in Faculty of Production Engineering, Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The main element of the test bench is one cylinder, direct injection engine Farymann Diesel 18W. Originally, the engine was equipped with mechanical Bosh direct injection system, which was replaced with Common Rail system. The test bench enables measurements of various parameters: torque, pressure inside the cylinder, temperature of cooling water and exhaust gases, emissions etc. The tests of the modified engine were conducted with use of several types of piston and injector.

One of the most important requirements in the design of diesel combustion systems is to reduce emissions of harmful chemical compounds contained in exhaust gases. Solution to this problem is sought by the use of advanced engine injection systems and accurate control of mixture formation inside a cylinder via split fuel injection. The differences in physical characteristics between traditional and alternative fuels can affect fuel metering, especially at short injection durations. Thus, the aim of the current study was to identify dynamic flow parameters of the Common Rail injector with the use of different fuels. The study involved Diesel available in retail and biodiesel fuel obtained by methyl esterification of fatty acids. Measurements were performed on a test stand designed for determination of injectors and injection pumps characteristics. Studies were carried out changing the following parameters: injection pressure in the range of 30-180 MPa, injection time in the range of 200-1600 microseconds. Each fuel was tested at temperature 40 and 60°C. The obtained test results showed that injection of different fuels provided variable amounts of fuel injected at short injection durations, which can affect mixture formation process as well as combustion. Effect of the dose of the injected fuel has a viscosity of used fuel.

An idea of using biomass for generating electricity and heat leads to new solutions for power generators, adapted to be supplied with gaseous and liquid biofuels. At present, there is a growing interest in low-power generators. This type of energy production is termed 'scattered energy generation'. It is expected that generating energy in small units situated close to energy consumers may bring about substantial benefits. It is assumed that in a scattered energy generation system, energy will be produced from local fuels, such as broadly understood biomass as a primary component for production of gaseous and liquid biofuels to power low-power energy generators. An adequate amount of biomass must be secured to ensure that biogas can be produced all year round. The easiest way to store highly efficient biomass is to ensile maize and rye as well as grass. The amounts of biogas obtained from these two types of silage are comparable. Using rye as a renewable energy source for production of either bioethanol or biogas is economically viable for at least two reasons: rye grows on poor class soils and rye cultivation technology can be reduced to just nitrogen fertilization. In conclusion, it seems reasonable to generate energy in Poland in scattered energy generation systems from crops grown for this purpose. Currently, gas-powered engines are being in several ways.

Opis:
Piston displacement pumps use in common rail fuel injection systems generates very high pressure, reaching even 300 MPa. Maintaining such a high pressure is possible thanks to very precise machining resulting in as little clearance between the piston-cylinder assemblies. Due to very high forces operating in the systems and relatively unfavourable lubrication conditions resulting from using fuel as lubricants, the pumps are subject to wear and consequently lose their operating parameters. The high cost of production of the pumps, resulting from their technological advancement, forced their manufacturers to introduce technologies for diagnosing and regenerating them. The diagnostics consists in removing the pump from the engine and having it verified using a test bed. The first stage consists of evaluating the pump’s flow at null pressure; follow by evaluation of its maximal delivery for the pressure of 100 MPa. The obtained values are compared to the values achieved by a new pump. The effect of negative evaluation on a test bed is the disassembly of the pump, verification of the condition of its parts and replacement of the damaged elements. The authors examined new and used pumps on a tested, aiming to determine the characteristics of delivery of a pump for various pressures. The objective of the research was to identify the actual points in the pump’s operation at which the delivery drops the most due to the wear. The highest difference in delivery was found to exist for the maximal compression pressure. The obtained results were analysed and the possibility of changing the pump diagnostics procedure with the use of a test bed was determined.

Opis:
The objective of this research project was to determine the percentage impact of dry-medium air filter being used in Fiat Multijet 1.3 JTD engine on its operational properties (engine flexibility and specific fuel consumption). Experiments were performed according to the requirements of research methods specified in the piston combustion engine standard in force. In order to make comparisons, operational parameters of the power unit (torque, effective power and specific fuel consumption) were measured with dry-medium air filter (with a new filter element) being fitted and with air filter being removed. Each point of respective characteristic curves was determined based on four measurements as their mean value. Also boost pressure, which could be of importance for results, was considered in the experiments. However, the degree of EGR valve lift, the operation of which could also appear to be important, was not taken into account. For each measuring point of respective characteristic curves, the ranges of measurement uncertainties were determined. Expanded standard uncertainties were calculated based on the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. The experiments being carried out allowed concluding that the engine with air filter was less flexible by approx. 20% when compared to that without air filter, whereas its specific fuel consumption was greater by approx. 9%. The degree of air filter pollution affects its flow resistance and, which is related to this, engine torque and its effective power as well as its flexibility decrease but fuel consumption increases
