- In 1992 the quality of nutrition was assessed in 36 orphanages and 18 state youth educational centres. In relation to a similar study in 1983 an improvement was found in the consumption of animal protein and vitamin C. In lunch meals the content of energy, protein, fat and sodium chloride was determined. The energy value of lunch meals was too low and their salt content was too high. The amount of food left on plates was assessed in 15 children in each institution studied, and the obtained values were the lowest found in similar studies published so far. The qualitative assessment of the food given, demonstrated a too small number of daily meals, frequent lack of brunches and afternoon snacks, too low share of vegetables and fruit in all meals, too frequent main courses without meat given for lunch.
