Opis:
An analytical study for the creeping flow of a couple stress fluid past a cylinder embedded in a porous medium is presented using the slip condition. The uniform flow is considered far away from a cylinder. The boundary conditions used are zero couple stress and tangential slip conditions. The modified Bessel functions represent the stream function (the velocity). The drag exerted on a solid cylinder immersed in a porous medium is derived. The impacts of the couple stress, permeability, and slip parameters on the normalized drag force are presented graphically. The drag forces of well-known exceptional cases are reduced. The drag force is a decreasing function of the permeability and couple stress parameters and an increasing function of the slip parameter.

Opis:
A domain-boundary element method, based on modified couple stress theory, is developed for transient dynamic analysis of functionally graded micro-beams. Incorporating static fundamental solutions as weight functions in weighted residual expressions, governing partial differential equations of motion are converted to a set of coupled integral equations. A system of ordinary differential equations in time is obtained by domain discretization and solved using the Houbolt time marching scheme. Developed procedures are verified through comparisons to the results available in the literature for micro- and macro-scale beams. Numerical results illustrate elastodynamic responses of graded micro-beams subjected to various loading types. It is shown that metal-rich micro-beams and those with a smaller length scale parameter ratio undergo higher displacements and are subjected to larger normal stresses.

Opis:
Basing on the consistent couple stress theory (CCST), we develop a unified size-dependent shear deformation theory to analyze the free vibration characteristics of simply supported, porous functionally graded (FG) piezoelectric microplates which resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation are subjected to electric voltages. Various CCST-based shear deformation theories can be reproduced by incorporating their corresponding shape functions, which characterize the through-thickness distributions of the shear deformations, into the unified size-dependent theory. The reproduced CCST-based plate theories include the classical plate theory (CPT), the first-order shear deformation plate theory (SDPT), Reddy’s refined SDPT, the sinusoidal SDPT, the exponential SDPT, and the hyperbolic SDPT. The unified size-dependent theory is subsequently used to determine the natural frequencies of simply supported, porous FG piezoelectric microplates and their corresponding vibration mode shapes. The effects of the material length scale parameter, the length-to-thickness ratio, the material-property gradient index, different values of the applied voltages, the porosity parameter, different porosity distribution patterns, the Winkler spring coefficient, and the shear modulus of the surrounding medium on the natural frequencies of the porous FG piezoelectric microplates are examined and appear to be significant.
