    Opis:
    Monitoring the quality of water for a long period of time is the only way to objectively assess the influence of human activity on the natural environment. Evaluation of water quality is not only of cognitive value but also of economic value, e.g. for industrial or agricultural purposes. Both environmental and human factors may significantly change the quality parameters of river waters. The aim of the experiments was to assess the variation in some chemical parameters describing the quality of the water of the Rawka river over a period of the last seven years (2003 - 2009) from the point of view of its suitability for irrigation. The analyses showed a relatively low salinity of the water but with a steadily rising trend. The increase in water salinity was caused by the rising levels of Mg, Na and Cl. No increase in N, P and K content in the water does not confirm the common opinion of the devastating influence of agriculture on the river’s water quality. Moreover, the results of this seven – year - long experiment showed that the Rawka’s water is still of high value for irrigation purposes.

    Opis:
    The experiment was conducted during two seasons (2002, 2003) t o investigate water consumption by three strawberry cultivars (‘Elsanta’, ‘Elkat’, ‘Salut’) grown under greenhouse conditions. Strawberry plants were grown in pots filled with a peat substrate. The pots were placed on top of glass containers filled with a nutrient solution. Each pot was connected with the container below by two pieces of water absorbing material immersed in the nutrient solution. The amount of the nutrient solution taken up by the plants was recorded every day. The highest water consumption was recorded for ‘Elsanta’, and the lowest one for ‘Salut’ plants. Water use efficiency calculated as a ratio of the total amount of water consumed by the plant and the size of the fruit crop produced ( cm 3 H 2 O g - 1 of fruit) was similar for the cultivars ‘ Salut’ and ‘Elsanta’. The highest level of water consumption recorded for ‘Elsanta’ plants indicates that it was caused by the high production potential of this cultivar.

    Opis:
    On the basis of the measurements recorded by seven automatic meteorological stations, evapotranspirati on (ET 0 ) was calculated according to the formula devised by Hargreaves and Hargreaves, modified by Droogers and Allen (H and HDA) and Grabarczyk (G). The obtained results were compared with the reference formula recommended by FAO, which adopted the Penman - Monteith formula (PM). A high correlation between the reference model and the simplified formulas was shown. The differences relate to the level of evapotranspiration (ET 0 ) worked out with the various formulas. The Hargreaves model gives a higher value in comparison with the PM formula, whereas Grabarczyk’s model (G) makes it lower. The application of the Hargreaves model modified by Doogers and Allen produced results closest to the reference model. In order to apply the Penman - Monteith model in practice, a lot of meteorological parameters are required, which is a serious limitation. The simpler methods might be used, but they require further investigations in our climatic conditions in order to verify their empirical factors.

    Opis:
    The aim of the study was to examine the effect of an emulsion containing copper orthosilicate on the form ation and growth of the root system of strawberry plug plants (cv. Elsanta). The emulsion reduced overgrowth and spiralling of the roots in pots. Plug plants grown in emulsion - treated pots had better root distribution and produced more branching and more l ateral roots compared with the control plants. No phytotoxicity of the emulsion was observed. After direct contact with the pot’s surface, the roots stopped growing; however, the formation of a large number of lateral roots made the root system evenly distributed throughout the pot. After outplanting, no detrimental effect on further plant development was observed. Plug plants rooted without the addition of the emulsion had a strong growing root system, but with a small number of lateral roots. Also, the massing of roots near the wall of the pot was evident. The obtained results showed that the emulsion containing copper orthosilicate may be used for improving the quality of strawberry planting material.

    Opis:
    Changes in the levels of starch, sucrose and fructose in the roots of strawberry tray plants (cv. ‘Elsanta’) as affected by the duration of the gro wing period (8, 12, 18 or 20 weeks) were examined. Measurements of air temperature during the growing period were used to calculate cumulative chilling hours (<7 ̊ C). The largest accumulation of starch in the roots was found in the plants grown for 20 weeks , which was associated with the increased amount of chilling received by this group of plants (707 h). The lowest amount of starch was recorded in the roots of tray plants cultivated for 8 weeks (this group of plants had not been exposed to chilling temper atures at all). After storage ( - 1.5 to - 2 ̊ C in a cooling chamber) no starch and low concentrations of soluble carbohydrates (sucrose and fructose) were detected in the roots of the plants which had not been exposed to chilling (cultivated for 8 weeks). Als o, post - storage vigour and productivity were the lowest in this group of plants. There were no differences in fruit yield between the plants cultivated for 12, 18 or 20 weeks.

    The aim of the study was to examine responses of ‘Premium Red’ poinsettia cultivated on ebb-and-flow benches at different nutrient solution concentrations (1.6, 2.0 and 2.4 mS·cm-1). Plants were grown at a greenhouse in 1.2 dm3 pots, filled in TS2 medium. The highest plants with the largest diameters and best quality were found when EC of the nutrient solution concentration was 2.0 or 2.4 mS·cm-1. At the vegetative and bract coloration stages, leaves of plants supplied with nutrient solutions at 2.0 and 2.4 mS·cm-1 had higher status of chlorophyll than those of from nutrient solution of 1.6 mS·cm-1. As the nutrient solution concentration increased, both concentrations of salts and macronutrients (N-NO3, P, K, Ca, Mg) in the medium increased. It was concluded that in cultivation of poinsettia on ebb-and-flow benches, adequate EC value of nutrient solution concentration was 2.0 mS·cm-1.
