Opis:
Introduction and objective. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the third most commonly diagnosed gynecological cancer among women worldwide and the second most common in Poland. Early-stage ovarian cancer is still very difficult to diagnose and concerns only about 20–30% of all ovarian cancers. Most cases (approximately 70%) of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at more advanced stages (III and IV). The aim of the review is to bring closer new potential biological markers – Nidogen-1 and Nidogen-2 in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Brief description of the state of knowledge. To date, the best serum marker for ovarian cancer is Ca-125, but its use as a screening marker is limited due to high false positive rates. Ca-125 could be elevated in other benign and malignant conditions. Serum concentrations of Nidogen-1 and Nidogen-2 are higher in the advanced stagegroup (Stage III and IV), in comparison to the early stage group (Stage I and II) in serous ovarian cancer, and can reflect the tumour burden. Analysis showed that Nidogens discriminate against patients with serous ovarian carcinomas from healthy controls. The concentrations of both of them correlate with concentration Ca-125, especially Nidogen-2. The above biomarkers were compared with the results of the preoperative detection of ovarian cancer that are often used in clinical practice – IOTA Simple Rules, Risk of Malignancy Index and Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm. Conclusions. Nidogen-1 and Nidogen-2 are new promising biomarkers for ovarian cancer, especially for the serous type, although there is still a need for prospective studies proving their good diagnostic value.

Opis:
Introduction: Despite the progress which has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, it is still one of the main causes of death in both men and women. The introduction of new therapeutic modalities did not improve the 5-year survival results of lung cancer patients. The Lublin Voivodeship is a sparsely-inhabited area with little urbanization and a population of about 2.2 million people. Only 46.8% of its citizens live in the towns, while the national average is 61.9%. Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the differences in the periods of time and reasons for delay in diagnosis and initiation of treatment of lung cancer among patients who are inhabitants of the rural and urban regions of Lublin Voivodeship, and who were consulted in Thoracic Surgery Department. Materials and methods: 300 lung cancer patients who were consulted in the Thoracic Surgery Outpatient Clinic or who were hospitalized in the Department of Thoracic Surgery in the period between 2 January 2010 – 7 January 2011 were included in the study. Delays were calculated for two periods of time: 1) time from the first signs of the disease to the first medical examination; 2) the time from the first visit to a doctor to the start of treatment, or disqualification from the causative treatment. The time of the first delay for the urban and rural populations was similar and ranged from 2-37 weeks and 2-23 weeks, respectively. Lack of time and disregard of signs of disease were the most commonly reasons given for the first delay among rural residents. The urban population indicated fear and lack of time as the main reasons of delay. Assessment of the second reason for delay was possible thanks to a specially designed research protocol which gathered the main reasons of delay in several subgroups that enabled their statistical evaluation. The length of second period was similar for both populations. Results: There were no significant differences in the length of the time of delay between the two assessed groups. In both groups, delays dependent on poor healthcare access were similar. Among rural inhabitants, the most often reasons of delay were waiting for hospital admission and re-bronchoscopy. In the urban population, the most common reasons for delay were waiting for hospitalization and CT procedure. Conclusions: The results of the presented research allowed the following conclusions to be drawn: between the two assessed groups there were no differences in the length of the time of delay; 2) delays in diagnosis and treatment were too long for the patients and could affect the severity of the disease and final prognosis; 3) there is a need for intensification of information campaigns on lung cancer in order to reduce the delays dependent on patients, and to improve the cooperation of family doctors, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons and oncologists.

Opis:
Initially, tobacco was considered as a decorative plant and only later began to be treated as a herb with special therapeutic properties. With time, it was found that tobacco had strong insecticidal and addictive properties. There also occurred reports about the negative influence of tobacco on human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies smoking as a chronic, progressive disease which is also ‘contagious’. It is also considered to be a neurobiotic addiction. Nicotine addiction does not cause changes in the behaviour or functioning of a smoker; however, it adversely affects his or her general health status and the health status of people within their environment. Passive smoking (so-called ETS – Environmental Tobacco Smoke), which means accompanying smokers negatively influences the health of passive smokers. Environmental tobacco smoke, on the one hand, is the result of spontaneous cigarette burning and, on the other hand, the result of the side-stream of cigarette smoke, as well as the smoke exhaled by active smokers. Health personnel should clearly and convincingly present the data concerning the adverse results of smoking, as well as the dangers of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, thereby making their patients aware that breaking their addiction will not only be beneficial for their own health, but will also protect non-smokers in their environment from the adverse effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Opis:
Hygiene plays an important role in patients who use removable dentures. The proper way of cleaning and storage also provides better health of oral cavity tissues as well as for the remaining teeth. The research involved 162 patients, 133 women and 29 men, aged 60–90, with different levels of education, the majority with secondary education. All patients were using removable dentures. 85.8% declared earlier use of dentures, and a half of the patients had used dentures for no more than 7.5 years. A considerable percentage (33.95%) used dentures for the whole day. Storing in a container with fluid was used by 25.93% of the respondents. Over 70% used toothpaste to clean their dentures and about 14% immersed them in special preparations, e.g. CoregaTabs, while over 8% used soap. Among patients who cleaned their dentures, the majority cleaned them once a week (75%) and the minority – twice a week (25%). The greatest percentage of patients cleaned their dentures with a toothbrush and toothpaste, which is not recommended due to occurring microabrasions. It is recommended that patients should be educated regarding prosthesis hygiene and regular follow-ups.
