Opis:
Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze selected potential demographic and psychological variables (anxiety and depression) as risk factors of inadequate control of bronchial asthma. Materials and method: The study consisted a group of 223 randomly selected asthma patients with varying degrees of asthma control. The study was designed as a diagnostic survey using the asthma control test (ACT), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), State- and Trait-Anxiety Inventory (STAI questionnaires X-1 and X-2), and the questionnaire for demographic data collection developed for the purposes of the presented study. Results: Inadequate control of asthma was significantly more frequent amongst females (p=0.008) who were rural inhabitants (p=0.020) and professionally active (p=0.000) patients diagnosed with any grade of depression with an aid of BDI (p=0.000). Patients with inadequate control of asthma were characterized by a significantly higher level of depression, compared to patients controlling this condition adequately (p=0.001). Conclusions: The female gender, living in a rural environment, professional activity, and even a slight degree of depression can promote inadequate control of asthma. Consequently, asthma patients with such characteristics should be provided with careful allergological surveillance. Since none of the abovementioned variables represents an independent risk factor of inadequate asthma control, it is not possible to classify asthma patients into risk groups on the basis of single parameter assessment. The risk of inadequate asthma control involves also individuals with a low severity of depression (more than 9 points on BDI), i.e. the patients who would not be diagnosed with even mild depression based on the existing criteria.

Opis:
Introduction. The overweight and obesity epidemic represents a rapidly growing threat to the health of populations in an increasing number of countries. Nearly one-third of the world’s population has excess adipose tissue. Nowadays, obesity occurrence is so common that it is replacing more traditional problems, such as an undernutrition and infectious diseases, as the most significant causes of ill health. If the current trend continues, almost half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030. Objective. The aim of this study is to show the connection between recent trends in body mass index, and the globally changing cancer profile. State of knowledge. A range of clinical and epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between excess body fat and the most frequently occurring malignancies. Obesity is associated with many cancers, such as: breast, colorectal, liver, lung, kidney, oesophageal, pancreatic, endometrium, ovarian, prostate, thyroid, and gallbladder cancer. Conclusions. In the light of this information, the study supports the claimed statement that obesity is one of the major health problems of the 21st century. Considering the increase in the number of obese people worldwide, it is necessary to develop a strategy allowing to prevent it. Fighting against unhealthy lifestyle in order to reduce overweight and obesity in society may have an essential impact on decreasing the number of incidences of cancer.

Opis:
Introduction. The article describes the process of converting a large multi-specialized hospital into one dedicated to COVID-19 patients, and present established standards of work organization in all the wards and training system of the medical and supporting staff. The several weeks pandemic of the COVID-19 disease has forced the healthcare systems of numerous countries to adjust their resources to the care of the growing number of COVID-19 patients. Managers were presented with the challenge of protecting the healthcare workers from transmission of the disease within medical institutions, and issues concerning the physical and psychological depletion of personnel. Materials and method. Based on analyses of the structure and work processes in Central Clinical Hospital (CCH) reconstructive strategic plan was developed. It included: division of existing wards into observation and isolation wards; installing locks; weekly plan for supplying personal protection equipment (PPE); designating new access to the hospital and communication routes; training of medical and supporting staff. The plan was implemented from the first days of conversion of the hospital. Results. The wards of the CCH were converted for observation and isolation, and each one was fitted with sanitary locks. There was a big improvement in the supply of PPE for the medical staff. Separation of the ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ parts of the CCH were attained, and widespread intensive training not only protected personnel against infections, but also diminished unrest which was discernable at the beginning of conversion. Conclusions. The transformation efforts will ultimately be appraised at the end of the epidemic, but the data looks encouraging. Two weeks after conversion, the testing of hospital Staff was started and by the end of April, 459 tests were had been conducted, of which only 11 were positive.
