Opis:
Standard methods for quantifi cation of airborne bacteria are based on cultivation and counting of grown colonies. From complex natural environments it is known that only a small fraction of the total number of cells can be cultivated on routinely used agar-media. Direct microscopic cell counting after DNA-staining usually generates higher concentrations of one to two magnitudes. The objective of the presented study was to compare the concentrations of airborne bacteria sampled in a composting facility by using for any sample the cultivation on trytic soy agar (TSA) – agar, as well as direct counting after DAPI-staining. The concentrations after counting grown colonies were within a range of 105-107 cfu m-3. Concentrations of direct counted cells ranged between 106-109 microbes m-3. In these comparative measurements only 1.5-15.3% of the airborne bacterial cells enumerated by direct counting formed countable colonies after incubation on TSA-agar. Obviously, cultivation based methods underestimate the real amount of airborne microbes. In addition, from literature it is known that inactive or even dead cells can also have the potential to cause health effects. Consequently, a risk assessment based only on measuring colony forming units may, in some cases, not be sufficient.

Wprowadzenie i cel pracy. Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 200 respondentów: 100 chłopców oraz 100 dziewcząt. Wśród nich było 100 gimnazjalistów oraz 100 licealistów. Rozkład respondentów według zmiennych umożliwia porównanie wyników uzyskanych w gimnazjach i liceach. Zastosowano autorski kwestionariusz składający się z 15 pytań zamkniętych oraz jednego otwartego. Wyniki.
Introduction and objective. Health education should be one of the primary tasks of the education system. An acquisition of basic knowledge concerning health behaviours during an early period of development may exert a positive effect on the state of health of society. The provision of schoolchildren with access to knowledge pertaining to health may constitute a challenge; nevertheless, the benefits are undeniable. The objective of the study was the determination of adolescents’ attitudes concerning the introduction of health education in schools, and their expectations with respect to contents and methods of education within this scope of problems. Material and methods. The study covered 200 respondents, 100 boys and 100 girls, including 100 junior high and 100 secondary school adolescents. The respondents’ distribution according to variables enables the comparison of the results obtained in junior high and secondary schools. The study was conducted using a questionnaire designed by the author, consisting of 15 closed questions and 1 open question. Results. As many as 91% of adolescents attending junior high school, and 83% of those from secondary school, knew the meaning of health education. The most important sources of information concerning health for adolescents attending junior high and secondary schools were: parents, family – 26% and 24%, the Internet – 20% and 23%, school – 16%, and 12%, respectively. 72% of junior high and 65% of secondary school adolescents considered health education at school as necessary, whereas 13 respondents from junior high school, and 21 from secondary school had no contact with any form of health education. Conclusions. At schools, the imparting of knowledge related with health is neglected. Efforts should be undertaken in order to more comprehensively discuss this cope of problems. It is necessary to seek new methods of conducting classes in health education, engage properly prepared persons, and not to repeat the same contents. Due to the lack of observance of these conditions the recipients do not derive the desired benefits from classes.

Introduction and objective. The palm quality selection process has risks of problems in ergonomics. The aim of this research is to study the factors related to musculoskeletal disorders in quality control palm workers at palm purchasing establishments in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Materials and method. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 50 workers with musculoskeletal disorders, as assessed by the Bureau of Occupational and Environmental Disease, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand. Ergonomic risk assessment was performed using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), and the data studied with the help of descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 19. Results. The sample included 96% of males with an average age of 34.2 years (SD=11.09). The participants used pickup trucks to transport palm oil from the plantation. 72% of the workers had worked at the plantation for 4.9±4.9 years; 54% did not work overtime. The average amount of palm oil collection for palm quality control was 23.5±11.3 tons/day. Quality control palm workers using sidecars (28%) were found to be moderately at risk, and those using trucks (72%) were at a high level of risk. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders after one year at work was 78%. The amount of palm oil controlled per day, working overtime, car type used for transport, and ergonomics risk level, were significantly related to musculoskeletal disorders in quality control palm workers (p-value <0.05). Conclusions. The results indicate a need for the top management and health-related personnel to promote occupational health and safety measures for quality control palm workers.

Opis:
Background: Existing smoking prevalence comparisons between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ members of the European Union (EU) give a misleading picture because of differences in methodology. A major EU project designed to find ways of closing the health gap between the member states, included the first ever comparison of smoking prevalence between these countries using a methodology that minimises potential biases. Methods: A detailed analysis of methods and data from the most recent nationwide studies was conducted in the adult population of 27 countries of the European Union and Russia as an external comparator. To maximise comparability, daily smoking in the age range 20-64 was used. Prevalence of current daily smoking, former smoking and never smoking were age-standardised and calculated separately for males and females. Findings: The European map of smoking prevalence shows that male smoking prevalence is much higher in the new than the old members of the EU, whereas in females the reverse is true, but there are also very large differences in smoking rates between particular countries within the same region. Sweden clearly has the lowest prevalence, and the prevalence in the United Kingdom (UK) at the time of the surveys emerges as near the average for old-Europe but higher than, for example, Ireland. Interpretation: Restricting the analysis to daily smokers aged 20-64 produces a map of Europe in which variation in prevalence between individual countries within regions is as important as variation across regions. Survey methods need to be harmonised across countries to enable comparisons involving all ages and non-daily as well as daily smokers.

Introduction. Ability to work is most often defined as a relationship between a person’s resources and requirements specific to a particular type of work. It is the result of interaction between job requirements in terms of physical and mental strain, capabilities and skills of the employee, as well as his/her health condition and own evaluation of functioning in a given organizational and social situation. Objective. The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the current value of the Work Ability Index (WAI) in a sample of employees in Poland. Materials and method. The study sample was selected purposefully from 422,000 employees covered by the largest occupational health provider in Poland. The standard WAI questionnaire provided by CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) methodology was voluntary and completed anonymously by 688 employees within 12 months (0.16% response rate). The results were statistically analyzed using the Pearson’s chi-squared test and correlation coefficient, independent- sample T test and one-way analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Results. It was found that the average value of WAI was 37.5 ± 7.7, and 37% of the participants represented low to moderate ability to work. The results showed no significant correlation between the WAI value and its 7 compounds and demographic variables. Nonetheless, a dependency between WAI level and industrial branch was observed. Conclusions. Subjects with moderate and low WAI (1/3 of the study population) had particular indications to implement prophylactic actions, especially for the health care employees and civil servants, whose ability to work may be subject to accelerated deterioration.

Opis:
Agricultural work, particularly livestock farming, is considered to be a notable risk factor for occupational diseases. Endotoxin as a major component of organic dust causes adverse health effects of the airways among farmers. Endotoxin concentrations in airborne and settled dust were measured in modern, naturally ventilated animal houses for different species. Median values of airborne inhalable endotoxin ranged from 16.9 EU/m3 for dairy cattle, 557.9 EU/m3 for beef cattle, 668.7 EU/m3 for pigs, 463.2 EU/m3 for laying hens, to 1,902 EU/m3 for turkeys. The endotoxin levels in settled dust followed the same pattern as the airborne samples. The concentrations were lower than in previous studies, but the proposed Dutch endotoxin threshold (50 EU/m3) was exceeded in most cases. Thus, endotoxin levels in modern animal houses still give concern for health and further reduction of endotoxin exposure in animal houses is desirable.
